I'm a bit surprised that no-one has mentioned that the Beatles had been hanging around with the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band at this time. The Bonzos had even appeared in "Magical Mysery Tour", and Paul McCartney produced "I'm the Urban Spaceman" for the Bonzos. It seems probable that John et al decided it would be fun to take a dip into the Bonzo's eccentric comedy music area, with a dash of satire included. Bonzo alumnus Neil Innes and George Harrison remained friends for years afterwards.

Mixed into stereo in 1996 for the "Anthology 3 set." John originally mixed it into mono in 1969 as a Plastic Ono Band song, but it went unreleased and wound up on the flip side of "Let It Be." John also edited it down from 6:10 to 4:17 to fit a 45 rpm single side. The title was taken from an ad in the British Yellow Pages phone book. It read "You Know Our Name, Look Up Our Number". John changed the word "our " in the title to "my" for the final title choice.

@@nazfrde There was a belch (by John) at the end of the original recording, and Capitol/EMI tried to remove that belching at the end by fading out too soon. It is true that there were a couple of additions (by George and Giles Martin), so this bootleg version here has the complete stereo mix. John did the original mono mix in 1969, and he edited it down to 4:17 to fit a 45 single. He was planning it as a Plastic Ono Band with "What's The New Mary Jane" on the flipside, but it never made it past an acetate. It was issued instead to fill out the B-side of "Let It Be".

Early? Not really. My Boy Lollipop was ska/bluebeat style record by Millie Small that was a top 10 hit in the UK and Ireland in 1964, and Desmond Dekker had 2 UK hits by 1968. Lots of Jamaican artists covered Beatles songs and I'm sure Paul and John would have been well aware of this.

Interesting to consider that they 'knocked this together' in the period between recording Pepper and those tracks that would become Mystery Tour. It was also around this time that John started to write Across The Universe. This track is the perfect example of how John and Paul liked to experiment with the music, taking one phrase from a telephone directory 'You Know The Name, Look Up The Number' and repeating the same phrase to differing styles and rhythms of music they created this six minute masterpiece. It's interesting to consider that John intended to release this as one side of the first Plastic Ono Band single but was vetoed by the other Beatles. As a compromise it ended up as the B-side to the Let It Be single. Some people seem to think that this track marked the end of the group yet it was recorded at the time when the group were at their most dazzling.
