I was a 4 year old girl when this was released. My name is Michelle. My older sister played it for me and told me Paul wrote it for me and was singing to me. I asked her to teach me French so I could talk to him. She taught me some but alas, I never got to talk to Paul. But I still feel kind of special when I hear this song. (And my sister is wonderful.)

In his book The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that John Lennon, who was older and in art college, used to take him to school parties. He remembered going to one distinct party and sitting in the corner with his black polo-neck sweater on, trying to look “interesting” to the older crowd around him. He played a French-sounding tune with his acoustic guitar and made guttural noises. Paul half hoped that someone would think he was French, possibly even “a French intellectual.” That’s where the basis for The Beatles’ “Michelle” came from, Paul’s memory of playing a faux French song. Later, in The Beatles, Paul and John were looking for new song ideas. John remembered Paul’s faux French tunes. He said to Paul, “Remember that daft French thing you used to do at parties?” Paul also thinks he must have been influenced by Édith Piaf’s “Milord,” a 1959 hit. Paul calls “Milord” out of the left field because you weren’t sure what genre it was. On top of Michelle being an unusual rock song, The Beatles’ “Michelle” also uses a couple of naughty chords. One of them is used in “Milord.” It’s an “old trick” of slowing down during the tune. Paul wrote that he must have had a memory of that in “the hopper.”

You cannot "strip down" what is already there, perfection. Too many instruments on this kind of song can totally destroy the intended effect. I had a girlfriend named Michelle. Before she became my girlfriend I told her I was going to sing her a Beatles song and she kind of rolled her eyes and gave me a look like "I know where this is going". So instead of singing her "Michelle" I sang "Something" She went from slightly annoyed to smiling ear to ear. She told me that tons of guys had sung it to her as if they were the first ones to think of it. She later told me that I completely surprised her and had made her feel extra special by not doing what all the other guys did.
@robertwiles8106Ай бұрын
Michelle came from a song fragment Paul had been kicking around since at least back in Hamburg, that John requested he flesh out because the band was badly starved for material going into the Rubber Soul sessions (Wait is even a throwaway Help! outtake they dusted off).

The Beatles were pretty good linguists. "Son les mots qui veux tres assemble" (excuse please any misspelling the French) means in English "these are words that go together well". They also did translations of She Loves You and I Want To Hold Your Hand into German. Incredible songwriting and really intelligent guys. Things like this is why I don't believe people give them the credit they deserve, despite being undeniably the greatest ever.

Hold up! Hold up!! Hold up!!! - Shout out to the hat repping my beloved Blue Jays! NOW the music - this is The Beatles flexing - you're right fella's it is great song writing, and a big reason why Rubber Soul matured rock n roll quickly. Rock n roll isn't always guitar/drums hitting heavy, there is art to rock n roll. This song proves it, and it's only 1965. It is beautiful, smooth, silky, flowing - the guitar work and bass are fabulous and ahead of its time. And those harmonies - a terrific love song. Play this song on piano or guitar and sing it to a girl of love interest...she'll cream in her jeans.

The acoustic guitar part was Paul. He was trying to play fingerstyle like Chet Atkins in “Trambone.” They listened to everything and tried to learn new ways of making music. That’s why they were so brilliant.
@thomastimlin1724

Here is the line up: referring to the guitar solo, that was obviously an electric guitar...played by George Harrison. The backing track contained McCartney’s Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar, George Harrison playing John Lennon’s Framus 12-string acoustic guitar, and Ringo Starr’s drumming. Each of the guitars on the rhythm track was capoed at the fifth fret. The recording was then given a reduction mix to free up extra tracks for overdubs. [They had only 4 tracks back then]. In the evening Lennon filled track two with his Ramírez acoustic guitar, on which he played the descending notes in the song’s introduction and transitions, plus a bass guitar part by McCartney, and an electric guitar solo played by Harrison. On track three were Lennon, McCartney and Harrison’s harmony vocals, and onto the final track McCartney recorded his lead vocals.

The acoustic guitar is, I think, Paul playing, and what makes it so interesting is that there are some really complex, jazzy chords in there mixed with very plain open 5ths, like he's trying to cram as much in as possible but somehow falling short - which is kind of the message of the song.

It's like every song has it's own personality and I have loved meeting ( all those years ago) and getting to know each one. The album and all of it's songs are very dear to me and I wouldn't really change a thing. Though sometimes I wish it could on and on, but that might change the whole dynamic. Guess I'll just have to play it again. Hope I'm making sense. It's the middle of the night and this train of thought just occurred to me about why Rubber Soul is so close to my heart.

Check out the really understated fuzz guitar by (I assume) George! It gives it that kind of burnished wood feel for me, a little bottom end to balance out the abundance of treble in the rest of the song. It’s mellow but it’s also muffled and to my ear gently overdriven. At this point I don’t think they had an overdrive effect available (the truth or legend is the Kinks had to “invent” it by tearing holes in their speakers), but it sounds like he cut the treble and mids so he could run more gain through it. I’m no guitar tech but this album is really when they started to take control of their musical environment.

Gorgeous. Yes. My favourite Beatles song.
I wonder how many girl babies born in the 70's were named after this fantastic song...🤔

Love the Blue Jays hat! Tres bien ensemble!
It’s always nice to hear a Beatles song, thanks
It just doesn't get any better!!!! I could listen to this song all day long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Classic McCartney!!!! He always had a great feel for creating melodies reminiscent of dreamy old-world Victorian era European romance. That's what this song always makes me think of.
Paul sang this for Michelle Obama when he was hosted at the White House. You should catch the entire event, featuring several famous musical performers.
Michelle came from a song fragment Paul had been kicking around since at least back in Hamburg, that John requested he flesh out because the band was badly starved for material going into the Rubber Soul sessions (Wait is even a throwaway Help! outtake they dusted off).
You might enjoy when he sang at the White House and to Michelle Obama in the front row, with apologies at the beginning to the President, who seated beside her.
Gorgeous song. No one writes stuff like this.
This song was massive.
These Beatles reactions are him. Can't wait for the next one!
My second daughter was named Michelle after this song.
This song is the reason I named my first daughter Michelle…may she rest in peace 💔
French translation "These are words that go together well, very well" He asked Jan Vaughan, a French teacher and wife of an old friend, Ivan Vaughan, how to say it because Macca thought the melody sounded French :). He sang this in The White House to Michelle Obama whilst she and Barack danced :)
This one was a hit with our parents at the time 😁
My sister would play this song on the piano back in the day.
Beautiful words and feelings..❤🙂
Hold up! Hold up!!

@@jimmoore8951 For sure! ..Kings employee as an assistant coach, the National Canadian basketball team's head coach, Jordi Fernandez - as a Canadian, lots of love! ..but lets be honest here, not only did Che wear a Blue Jays cap, but the old school one! The baby blue with that logo from the late 70's, is dirty. The kid knows style!
Rubber Soul is one of the greatest albums ever.
" Michelle ma belle, sont deux mots qui vont très bien ensemble" . I m French. When I was a little girl who didnt know a word of english, I loved this song for only these words!😅
keep it rolling, you're starting this summer on a roll.
great tune, just fng great tune.
My parents got my middle name from this song. It was released a couple of years before I was born. It really is beautiful.
I have not watched this yet, but my name is Michelle. I love this song no matter how many times people sing this to me.
👍👍👍👍👍
I have a crystal clear memory of sitting in the backseat of my parent’s beetle with my sister Michelle who was about 4 at the time, I was 10; this song came on the radio, so I started singing it to her and she lost her mind; thought I was making fun of her, she was crying and yelling. Can’t hear the song and not think of that 😂
I love the reaction guys, as always! For the first time, this song made me think of Django Reinhardt today, known for his jazz and gypsy jazz styled guitar playing.
I had this album I must have played it a million times. I have a picture of myself holding it lol. Great times , thank you
Nice reaction. I appreciate the impressive musical knowledge you guys demonstrate in your reactions.
❤
This was an amazing transitional album - to Revolver and then to Magical Mystery Tour, if I recall correctly. My favorite cut is "I'm Looking Through You."
It's somewhat in the style of Django Reinhardt, the gypsy jazz musician
Great review. Thanks La and Che!
BACK TO RUBBER SOUL! 😊
Just as fresh in 2024...
Beautiful
"Wooden Heart" is a pop song recorded by Elvis Presley. He sings some words in German. The composition is based on a German folk song.
Fella's, go to "A Hard Days Night" for pure song writing craft and execution.
The acoustic guitar part was Paul. He was trying to play fingerstyle like Chet Atkins in “Trambone.” They listened to everything and tried to learn new ways of making music. That’s why they were so brilliant.

A couple of years earlier they released 2 of their singles in English and German They can be found on past masters vol 1 Which is all their singles (they didn't add their singles to the albums until late 60s and even then they were recorded differently Past Masters vol 1 & 2 are must listen
If you remember back in the day, Dougie Fresh sampled this in his song “the show” and was forced to remove the french lyric
Love this record❤
The acoustic guitar is, I think, Paul playing, and what makes it so interesting is that there are some really complex, jazzy chords in there mixed with very plain open 5ths, like he's trying to cram as much in as possible but somehow falling short - which is kind of the message of the song.
That no-treble lead guitar run is a brilliant substitute for a clichéd French accordion. Prod. George Martin wrote it and taught it to Harrison.
George is a great guitar player

FACTS!!
Loving this whole album review as you go song by song. I have listened to it so many times myself.
Whatchacall romantic, fellas. The girls dropped like flies when this tune was being played.
You want to see someone play the sitar live this is the guy that taught the Beatles And The Rolling Stones and everybody how to play the sitar react to Ravi Shankar on the sitar and play painted black by The Rolling Stones live Brian Jones plays the sitar
Earlier on they rerecorded two of their songs in German for that market.
Fun Fact: Until the song "Taxman" on the Revolver album, all the songs the Beatles wrote were about love and relationships.
Guys, for a totally different side, try "You know my name, look up the number". Even when they're playing around, still genius. Thanks!
You guys are the best 👌.
Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh referenced this song in "The Show"... 😁
The funny thing to me is I'm French Canadian and they say my accent is slang and the best is that the English in England have the best French accent when they speak French
