The Beatles 'Love Songs' LP - Just Another Capitol Cash Grab?

Музыка

Capitol launched this double album compilation late 1977. Conceived this album as a 'gift for Granny' , it was shunned by many Beatles fans as it offered them nothing new at the time. In this video we find out how it has stood the test of time by looking at the track listing, packaging and sound quality. We also look at some interesting collectible items related to this forgotten compilation.
p.s. for anyone not familiar with the phrase, 'Swinging for the bleacher seats', it's a baseball idiom meaning "to put forward one's maximum amount of effort or energy into something".

As with the "Rock'n'Roll Music" double-set, this collection saw heavy use in the dance dj business my chums and I ran back in the late '70s/early '80s. Between those two collections, a DJ had access to any Beatles song someone might want to dance to, be it fast or slow. The sound was hardly audiophile quality, but plenty good enough for a portable PA system in a high school gymnasium.

I remember buying Love Songs with my hard earned paper route money in 1978. I listened to sides 1 and 2 before turning off the stereo, planning to return later to listen to the remainder of the album. When I returned to finish the album, I flipped the record to side 3 (remember, sides 1 and 4 were on one disk, and 2 and 3 were on the other disk) and instead of hearing “Michelle” the song “Something” began to play. I thought it odd because I didn’t remember turning the record over earlier. So I flipped it once more and “Something” began to play again! It was then I realized I had a misprinted record with side 2 stamped on both sides! I was really bummed and considered returning it to the record store as I didn’t have a lot of money at 15 years of age. In the end, though, I held on to it and never played it again figuring it to be a rarity. A few years later I purchased another copy which plays correctly and is my go-to record when I want to listen to Love Songs. I still have my misprint and it’s in mint condition. I’ve always liked this compilation with its “deluxe” style faux-leather packaging and see no need to change the track order.

My dad gave this album to my mom in 1980, the Christmas John was shot and killed. I was already a fan too and I played this album to death. I was a kid and this music drew me in closer to the Beatles. I was only 8, and it served as a springboard to learning the Band’s actual releases. When I hear it today, it takes me back to that sad time when the world lost its imagination. There will never be another Lennon.

This was my personal introduction to The Beatles' music. My mother had it in her LP collection and had copied it over to cassette sometime before I was born. That tape was one of the several that captivated me in my early childhood and eventually I inherited her LP collection around the age of 6. Soon after, The Beatles Anthology TV series appeared on ABC and my life was forever impacted. -Jared

My mom was technically a first generation Beatle fan, although she was very young when they arrived on the scene (she was only 11 or 12 when Abbey Road came out) so its kind of cool to think that we both probably heard The Beatles when we were at the same age.

Since you mentioned "Reel Music", yeah, it was just another cash grab, however I bought it in 1982 and being Canadian, I noticed for the first time that "Ticket To Ride" and "A Hard Day's Night" were in true stereo. If fact, they both made their first true stereo appearance in the US/Canada on this LP. So it had SOMETHING going for it! 1982s "20 Greatest Hits" also contained the first true stereo mixes of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "I Feel Fine" for the US/Canada. Yep, we North American's knew only the mono and the horrid, rechannelled versions of these tracks for years!

It shows how different The Beatles songwriting was compared to the Stones in the 60's. You would be hard pressed to make a Single of Beatles 'Hate' songs. Maybe Run for your life and Maxwell's silver Hammer. But with the Stones it's a much easier task. Stupid Girl, Yesterday's Paper's, Midnight Rambler and many more. Paul was always very proud they used their power and fame in a more loving way. Great show, How about a show on the Legendary Bootlegs? Sessions/ Unsurpassed Masters and even now with the Spectral Stereo mixes available.

Thanks for another great video Andrew. This Boy made it's first true stereo appearance in 1976 on Canadian and Australian reissue singles. Yes It Is also appeared in true stereo on a 1976 Dutch reissue single. Why Capitol couldn't track down proper master tapes is just one reason I never considered buying this compilation and yes it did have cash grab written all over it. I also totally agree with your substitute track listing. Some of those songs Capitol chose don't belong there at all.

This definitely struck me as a cash grab at the time, so I skipped it. My parents, though, were thinking about buying it, so I offered to recreate it on cassette for them from my own vinyl collection. Mom and dad were strictly showtunes and easy listening kind of people, so I left out some of the harder rocking numbers in favor of things like "Til There Was You" and "Julia." Closed out the set with "Goodnight."

I bought this album when it first came out. I can't remember if it had the Beatles name embossed on the cover. Anyway I didn't keep it for too long and traded it in for a Led Zep album or someone like that. The reason being is I had most of the songs on other Beatle comp albums. Some US and UK fans may not know that some Beatle comp albums were issued only in certain countries for that market that they may of heard of.

As always, great upload! I purchased the Beatles Love Songs album and I'm not really sure why I did. Having owned the entire collection already I figured it would be nice to have new vinyl that wasn't all scratchy and worn out from continuous play. The album wasn't really received that well in the US. The Rock and Roll Music album was a great concept, but it became obvious that this was another collection offered as more "product." The visual package of the album was well done. I think I pretty much agree with your choice of songs to be switched out. I did have a bootleg mix of Yes it Is in stereo with a dry mix without the echo in the early 80s. Capitol Records were too slow in catching up.

Ballads was HUGE here in Australia! The passing of John Lennon in December caused such high local demand for this album that copies were initially imported from the UK. It would not be until April 1981 before the album would be manufactured locally. By October 1981, thanks largely to aggressive TV marketing by EMI (Australia) - I have a link to a period advertisement on my website - the album had spent seven weeks at the top of the charts and had sold over 200,000 copies, making it one of EMI's strongest performers for the year. It would ultimately spend 26 weeks in the charts.

Between all the Capitol compilations done in the late 70s early 80s, this is my favourite! I wouldn't change a single song on this set, I feel that "All My Loving" or "Eight Days A Week" are more up-tempo, they wouldn't set the tone as "Yesterday" or "Something" do here. The only song I think is misplaced is "PS I Love You". I used to listen to this compilation on my walkman a lot when I was going to bed (yup! it was more of a "sleepman" than a walkman for me!) and "PS I Love You" always made me jump after the quieter "I Will"! It's a great package to listen to.

I hope I'm not being crass when I suggest that what Capitol was trying to accomplish with Love Songs was a collection of Beatles "make out" music-tunes a fellow would play in the background as he tried to score with his lady. This being 1977, slow, not TOO energetic songs would have been a requisite. All My Loving and Any Time At All would have been much too frenetic. Of course not everyone who bought a copy of Love Songs was doing it with carnal desires in mind-but I do think this is what CAPITOL had in mind. One last thing-I'd always thought Paul's image had been enlarged in the album art because-and remember this was '77-he was the most "popular" at the time.

Great video - I've always wondered why there were so many compilation albums at that time and you explain the murky background story really well! That Beatles portrait is my favourite of all the cover photo collages - it's, as you say, so timeless. The 'Reel music' cover I find quite interesting because of the concept of having their personages in the films portrayed all queuing up to go in the cinema; though I agree, in retrospect they could have used a better artistic style - like the rock and roll album, the actual likeness of them is not quite right.

I passed on it back in 1978, and didn't own a copy till about 6 months ago. I got a very good copy with booklet and inner sleeves. The vinyl looks as if it was never played, I would say close to mint. I viewed most of these albums back then for what they were, cash grabs. I've mellowed and enjoy them with the grand kids. Again, great video.

It wasn't until Anthology that they caught on that fans were interested in the unreleased or bootlegged stuff. That's when they started to release the "deluxe box sets" with CD's with the vault material as an incentive to repurchase albums you already had (doing the remastering on those albums as well). Yes the packaging was really well done but the 1970's albums were just basically cash grabs.

Their classiest compilation as it is. The best context to discover Every Little Thing and It’s Only Love. Only the latest Bulgarian editions featured the white cover, maybe they‘d gone out of ink or tried to avoid licensing issues.

Too many Beatles songs are about love to make this a meaningful starting concept for an album. Every Beatle single up until Help were about love for a start! Discarding up tempo love songs and ballads not about love, "Slow love ballads" would have been a relatively short album, though a Paul McCartney slow love ballads compilation covering his Beatles, solo and Wings output up until 1977 would have been a cracking album!

Whoah! I would've absolutely LOVED if they would've gone with that trippy psychedelic jungle art painting for the cover of the White Album. Although the White Album is one of my top favorite Beatles albums; I feel we all lost out on an opportunity for a cool cover, being that the White Album is just plain white. I wish that would've been it. Regardless; wouldn't that be cool if they re-released that ballads album for a RSD realease?!

These days you can make your own playlists on Spotify etc. and recreate the tracklists of old deleted albums which I tend to do myself. So re-releasing old deleted compilations would only be for nostalgic reasons or for people who prefer the vinyl listening experience.

Most post Beatles album compilations were cash grabs. That is what sustains the record labels lucky enough to have a big-selling act. RCA milked the Elvis catalog for years packaging and repackaging his music. The Beatles Love Songs was in fact a Capitol cash grab. Interestingly it was only a certified gold record at the time, a disappointing showing for a Beatles album. Additionally, each unit sold on a double LP set counted as two records. It took many years to be certified as platinum.

Some of the tracks belong better on "Ballads" (like 'She's Leaving Home') and like you I've always wondered why some obvious love songs didn't make the final cut... (When I'm 64, I've Just Seen A Face and (why not) Long Long Long!!! Now I have 3 copies of this... The Greek, Italian and Bulgarian editions...

Interestingly, people usually diss the cover artwork for Reel Music, yet David McMacken produced some fine albums covers for other artists, namely Over-Nite Sensation and 200 Motels for Frank Zappa, L.A. (Light Album) and Friends for The Beach Boys and Cat Stevens Greatest Hits and The Best of Arlo Guthrie.

Back in “the day” I did feel exactly how you felt about the collection as a whole. Loving the cover art more than the content really. But ‘as time goes by’ I’ve found the album quite listenable warts and all. I did make a cassette version for myself adding a few tracks that went back to BBC days. Always loved their version of ‘Soldier Of Love’ tho not an original. ‘I’ve Just Seen A Face’, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’, ‘Oh! Darling’, ‘All My Loving‘, and ‘Do You Want To Know A Secret’…to name a few. Do love songs always have to be slow? I think not😀 ! Great show again!

In 1977, at 13 years old, I was already a Beatles collector. In Canada, I remember going to where I bought my albums with my allowance money and seeing the Capital Records display featuring the colored vinyl albums. Back then these were expensive, especially to a kid like me. I had no intentions of buying Love Songs. Then by luck I literally found $30 on the ground that someone obviously had lost. Sorry as a 13 year old kid I took the money, went to the record store and bought both The White Album on white vinyl and Love Songs on gold vinyl. I am now in my 50s and I still have both LPs, hardly played, in my collection.

According to a 2009 thread on the Steve Hoffman forum, the following matrix numbers found in the Dutch version of the 1976 singles box set contains the genuine stereo mix of "Yes It Is." Assuming this is kosher, its the earliest known use of that stereo mix. Ticket to Ride matrix is 7XCE 18254 1128129-2-4. Yes It Is matrix is 7XCE 18255 1128130-2-4. (For further information, Google is your friend. KZread doesn't seem to want to post a direct link to the thread.)

Your usual terrific work, Andrew, but I disagree with ending on the melancholy, regretful "Yesterday."* My own program has thematic sides, with two (stackable) sides dedicated to "smoochable" songs for 40 minutes of necking. I tried to stick with songs that are only about romantic love, and I was less concerned with adding up-tempo tracks - Love Songs was compiled at a time when boomers were mellowing down. Side 1 - The Joy of Love - Love Me Do, From Me to You, She's a Woman, Every Little Thing, Old Brown Shoe, I've Just Seen a Face, Eight Days a Week Side 2 - Romantic Uncertainty and Vulnerability - If I Fell, When I'm 64, No Reply, Yes It Is, Don't Let Me Down, Yesterday, It's Only Love Side 3 - Separation and Return - All My Loving, Honey Pie, I'll Get You, Michelle, Ask Me Why, I'll Be Back, Good Day Sunshine Side 4 - Devotion - Here, There, and Everywhere, I Need You, And I Love Her, All I've Got to Do, I Will, Something, In My Life * If you think about it, "In My Life" may be the greatest rock lyric about romantic love ever - sorry, Paul!

Yes It Is imo is one of The Beatles best although almost forgotten and overlooked songs. It was almost a variation of This Boy given the Rubber Soul treatment. Should Apple ever create a Love2 album of Beatle remixes, re -edits and remixes I believe that Yes It Is with strings and just the vocals would do for it what George Martin did with strings for While My Guitar Gently Weeps on the Love album. As I first wave Beatles Gen fan, Love Songs was never purchased, wasn’t all that interested had created my own Beatles mixes on cassette tape back in the day like many others. The track listing and choices were pretty poor considering what was in The Beatles back catalogue and including a non Beatles composition was another mistake imo. Can see how though it would have made a good impression on the second wave Beatle Gen who were making their own first journey of discovery with the band. Here’s my take on a Beatles Love Songs mix (20 songs just like the original release) I always believe that the subtle flow of a mix is essential. Hey Jude - In My Life - Something - Yes It Is - I Will Eight Days A Week - All My Loving - Got To Get You Into My Life - Things We Said Today - We Can Work it Out All You Need Is Love - For No One - If I Fell - Michelle - This Boy I Should Have Known Better- And I Love Her - Girl - It’s Only Love - The Long And Winding Road

One idea for a compilo would be a "taster", with 1 track from every album, as an at-a-glance idea of the evolution over the decade. For that I would suggest: I Saw Her Standing There (first track on first album) I Wanna Be Your Man (need a Ringo song in there) I Should Have Known Better No Reply (getting away from the songwriter perspective) You've Got To Hide Your Love Away Norwegian Wood (a major musical leap) Taxman (moving away from love songs towards social issues) I Am The Walrus (pure surreality) A Day In The Life (a genuine work of art) Helter Skelter (inventing heavy metal) Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End (playing with the notion of a song) For You Blue (last track on last album that's not a single - and signposting that the breakout star would be George) Given that Magical Mystery Tour had an album-worth of fresh material and Yellow Submarine did not, I've put that in the chronology instead.

What would I add or change? Mmmm... have to think about that. I saw Love Songs in the shops but never paid it much attention when I was building my Beatles collection since I would eventually get all those songs on the original LPs or singles. I would agree 100% that Yesterday is a better closing song (as it is on Disc 1 of the 1962-1966 set) than opening song. (BTW, I fee the same about Bridge Over Troubled Water on that LP--should have opened that with Keep the Customer Satisfied... but I digress). Again, a fascinating deep-dive, Andrew. I'm loving these videos! Keep them coming. 😀
