The Beatles in America (1966) - "More popular than Jesus"

Музыка

On 13 June 2023, Sir Paul McCartney told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that he had used AI technology to "extricate" John Lennon's voice from an old demo in order to create what he referred to as "the final Beatles record". Months later, on 26 October, it was announced that the mystery track is a complete version of Now And Then, a demo composed and recorded by John Lennon in 1978 (two years before his death), and finally completed after four decades and featuring all four Beatles. Now and Then will be released on 2 November 2023.
This exclusive ITN News documentary film follows The Beatles - Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr - on their tour of America in 1966, a tour plagued by the controversy which followed Lennon's comments that the band were 'more popular than Jesus Christ'. The report includes rare footage of Lennon defending his comments and offering an apology. It was after this US tour that the band decided to stop playing live shows, their last live gig taking place on 29 August 1966 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California.

5:55 This young woman is smart and mature. She says exactly what I have long thought. Why should popularity be the basic measure of the value of their religious figure? Being a leader of right over wrong means telling people things that are frequently going to be unpopular. And you cannot compare the sort of popularity an entertainer achieves with the popularity of a spiritual ideal or religion.

If Jesus stands as the Almighty of Creation, one would think the "Christians" of the Bible Belt wouldn't have cared or regarded for one moment what John had said. (As if Jesus needed any of them to fight for him on his behalf in the first place. 😁) The whole point of burning their records publicly was a massive violent act for sure, especially the message that was relayed to their children! Destroy what you disagree with, which has never worked on planet Earth, nor can it. But they still keep trying bless their tiny, blackened souls. But... isn't it also ironic that if the Bible Belt felt John's statement was absolute blasphemy, then why did they respond to it as if it were the truth?! The sunglassed, KKK dude who was interviewed at the time said they (KKK) were a religious order and then referred to themselves in the same breath as a terrorist organization. What?! Which is it?! Both? Probably. Book banning, Beatle banning, assassinations, burning crosses, and humans at the stake is a primitive form of psychopathic vengeance that never questions itself or its intent because it doesn't see itself as wrong and therefore completely in line with what they believe faith is to "them". Therefore, they become automatically justified for all their actions, no matter how violent, hypocritical, or insane they really are. But everyone got a lot of free publicity out of it, didn't they, and the Beatles amazingly, are still more popular than Tommy Charles of WAQY's "Ban the Beatles" crusade!

I'm a Christian, and the whole matter of greater popularity than Jesus is and always was idiotic, and the outraged reactions were disingenuous and performative. Any Christian, any true Christian as opposed to a sanctimonious phony, understands that this world is by nature hostile to God, hostile to Jesus Christ. I'm sure a lot of the teens were naive and genuinely hurt, but most people in the South in those days took the whole thing in stride. I should know. I was one of them.

John did a typical ADHD-thing, he said something in a straight-forward way, which he knew was true, but wasn't that aware of how people would take. At least he admitted he was being clumsy and apologized in order not to get lynched by all those religious people who had (chosen to) misinterpret(ed) him. Also, if you look at other interviews about this, you can see that Paul is pretty damned angry as well, they all are. I still wonder why John did that thing with his mouth though...

That was the problem. The DJs were brainwashed Christ followers not music aficionados. I mean, look at this jockey. Bad plaid and tie. Their view was narrow: 'Keep it clean and wholesome for the kiddies'. It changed later on when FM debuted. The DJs were given free reign and that spurred on the bands to be bolder and take chances.

The Christians should read their Bible. Its right in there in Isaiah 43:10-12, that there is no savior. Isaiah also states that Israel is the suffering servant, not Jesus. Also the Christian writers were writing the New Testament 35-100 years after his death. The disciples never wrote anything down themselves. They never learned how to read and write. Christianity never caught on until 300 after his death because Constantine, a Roman promoted to try and destroy the Jewish religion. Christ's birthday was chosen by Roman influence.. December 25 was regarded as a miracles because by that day, sunlight was getting longer. The Romans didn't know what caused the seasons. The Jewish leaders knew Jesus wasn't the messiah, described by the Jewish prophets and so they chose the false prophet to die given the choice. The Roams killed him, not the jews. The Romans killed anyone who broke Roman laws before and after the death of Jesus.
