Watching this concert made me realize Carl Wilson really was the GLUE and soul of this band! I mean, I dont think I've ever heard him sing Dont worry baby before- and you realize today, Carl is what's missing from the band. Wish I was old enough to have seen Carl in concert. I was 1.5 years old when he died in Feb 1998.

Emily Graziano I was able to see the Beach Boys twice (in 1982 and 1985) when Carl was still living. You're right, in many ways, Carl was the glue holding the band together. When he took a leave of absence (in 1981) to try starting a solo career, the group's live performances suffered from his absence.

I didn't really finish that. Dennis died soon after the first one. From what I've seen in videos, he tended to play drums really fast. Anyway, they were all really fun shows. I was in my 20's then. Those were the most fun concerts I've ever been to. The whole audience would get up and dance.

Amazing show. You know, I don’t know exactly when the traveling jukebox era began where they started to just mostly play the same hits everyone knows at every show, maybe it was the late 70’s. But every now and then, they’d put a show together like this where they sneak in great deep cuts like This Whole World or Forever and they nail it. Or like in 93 when the band broke out the Smile version of Wonderful, Vegatables, and Take A Load Off Your Feet, and it makes you wonder why they don’t do that more often. I love the old stuff as they are very important, but if you’d ask if I’d rather see The Beach Boys play Little Deuce Coup and Be True To Your School or This Whole World, I’m taking This Whole World every single time.

@anon OK, those are your beliefs, but what do they do have to do with your comments or leokimvideo's comments? You have a right to share your opinions but make your own separate comment; there's no need to clog up our feeds. And how does The Little Old Lady from Pasadena discriminate against seniors? It's a comedic song parodying the ideas of "little old ladies" taking out their very nice, expensive cars once or twice a week.

You've already spread your nonsense over at Smiley Smile. And clearly, you're getting bolder too because it used to be that your only problems were with California Girls and The Little Old Lady from Pasadena. Now you've added another 3 songs to your tirade. If these songs were so offensive, there would be more protest than just you, and they likely wouldn't be performed.

I honestly believe, and it’s no direct knock on Mike but rather the excellence of Carl but that since his passing and not been in the band Mike (not at all due to age, you can hear it directly after the millennium till the 50th Anniversary tour, but Mike sings to his peak here who no longer does or can in ways that Al still does, and whethe that’s bc Al is in Brian’s band and Mike and Bruce are together, but I know the band always said that Carl was the live band tuning fork or dog ear Wilson (like what Mike called Brian during studio sessions) the member who would notice if someone was off key or rhythm or whatever. And I’m sure Mike has clearly gotten more and more lax. Bruce bringing his daughter out during the theremin break in Good Vibrations the camera caught was a super cute moment. Bruce is a legit dude. But boy do I miss Carl Wilson and Denni too. I wish he wrote a memoir, man the stories that guy could probably have told. RIP Dennis and Carl Wilson, long live The Beach Boys music and artistic legacy! -Great to watch this performance thanks for the upload and share!

Yeah, in 2014 Jeff jumped ship from the real Beach Boys - Brian and his excellent band- back to Mike Love's faux Beach Boys. Gotta say Mike's lead vocals here in '88 sound as thin and nasal-infected as ever, but Bruce, Al and Carl do deliver the goods. Carl's lead vocal on Sunflower's "This Whole World" is a rare treat, indeed. His signature "God Only Knows" should be played on repeat in heaven. That said, Brian and his band carry on the authentic Beach Boy legacy. Thanks for sharing, SpacemanSurfer. Happy New Year, everyone.

A good set list. Not sure why Carl sung Dont Worry Baby because he never had the falsetto that Brian had on this tune. Jeff Foskett was there, has the falsetto and used to sing that song (Adrian Baker & Matt Jardine also). Two gems from Sunflower LP, Brian's 'This Whole World' & Dennis' best song he wrote 'Forever'. From Holland LP, 'Sail on Sailor' with Billy. Plus All Summer Long, Hushabye and Wendy. Early 70's Okie from Muskogee was a constant in their concert set lists. Doesnt seem like the cheerleaders had their dance routine in sync with the song.

I hope you find a bit of comfort in the huge library of archive material that there is of the Boys on You Tube. As a relatively new fan I'm loving discovering it all. It's tragic that Carl was taken so early. From what I've read, he had a strong belief in God, which must have been a comfort to him towards the end of his life.

Well they started at 1:25 into the video and from 1:25 to 1:36, Bruce has been waving. At 1:36 Billy Hinsche starts with the carnival sounding organ. Well, Bruce plays the keyboards, but all he is doing is adjust the mic and clapping in rhythm/ AT 1:57 he is more interested in moving some equipment around. Around 2:10 he begins playing with two hands for 3 seconds, goes to one hand for a few seconds and then begins his trained seal clapping act. What a joke

What was the need for Billy Hinsche to sing SOS? Outside of Blondie Chaplin, this was a CARL song. I know they are best friends and former brother in laws, but when BB fans go to a BB concert, they want to see the BB sing the songs, not their former relatives sing it. Especially when they have absolutely zero connection to the creation of the song.

@@Pibb99 you tout that Billy played and sang SOS for decades.... which infers 20 plus years.... at minimum. Billy was a BACKUP musician for the group from 1971 to 1977. Not one did he sing lead on SOS during that time. That's 8 years. He left the BB but came back in 1982 until 1996....14 years. I have seen the BB over 50 times... from 1965 until 2012. While I did see Billy perform a FEW times as a keyboardist....I never ever saw him ONCE take the lead on SOS. I saw Carl sing it all the time... with the rare Brian occasion.
