The BBC Show That Had The Whole Country Watching (The Traitors UK Season 2)

Last year, I made a video talking about the Traitors UK, and this last month it returned for it's long awaited second season. In this video, I take a look at how I think this season stacks up against the first, what continues to make the show so special, and all the other things I forgot to mention the first time around!

No problem! I love multi-hour video essays like that, and it was put together super well! (And the death note jokes were very funny lmao) I had it on while I was getting this video ready to go, but figured I'd throw in the shoutout at the last minute! I'm looking forward to what you do next!

My favorite thing about the traitors as a franchise is that each season is completely different from the previous despite the format being nearly identical from season to season. The casting on most of these seasons are incredible, the gameplay will always vary, and you never truly know how it’s going to end until the very last moment. It’s the best new reality show we have gotten in a long long time and I really enjoyed this video review on the latest season

Thank you for the kind words! I agree though, even if some challenges are shared between different seasons, I think the casting keeps things always feeling fresh regardless!

I think to the point you touched on, there should be more guardrails/rules to the constant recruitment of Traitors. Because they are the namesake and main characters of the show, I understand wanting to have enough of them to ensure at least 1 makes it to finale, but I do think the ability to recruit whenever the number of Traitors drops below 3 regardless of it is in the early, mid, or late game is way too OP. The game is already weighted towards the Traitors as is and that ability really makes it almost impossible for Faithful to win. It kind of felt like a cheap gimmick at that point, to recruit both Andrew and Ross in such quick succession. Limiting recruitment towards the later game would force deceptive Traitors like Harry to be more tactical in when he takes out his fellow Traitors, versus, yes, if someone helped me take out 5 other traitors throughout the season, almost 1/4 of the cast, I may be partial to think they are a faithful too.I felt similarly about AU season 1.

I agree! I think there should be stuff in place to ensure that there's at least 1 Traitor in the game until ep 10/11 to keep the game interesting, but I agree that the Ross recruitment felt like it handed the Traitors the game. I'm pretty sure if there was a cap enforced at that point, that he final outcome would've looked a lot different. But to give credit, Harry's shield trick was clever to use then nonetheless and made for some good TV.

I couldn’t agree more. This is my only gripe with the show and it’s a gaping illogical flaw in the game. They should announce at the start there can only ever be a max of 5 traitors or something. Imagine this scenario…the first 3 banishments they vote out 3 traitors. Come the next banishment there could be a brand new 3 already in place. Not only that, but due to the banishments the % of traitors is now higher! This means the faithful are now in a worse position despite a flawless start. This could just go on and on. I really hope they fix this.

I agree! I think it should be ensured there's at least one traitor to keep the tension, but I wouldn't mind seeing production think of a few ways to ensure the percentage of faithfuls to traitors doesn't get skewed a lot. That said, I personally wouldn't say the maximum amount of traitors just because it'd let the faithfuls confirm if they'd won the game (in the event they caught 5 before the final) and production would probably have to step in lol. Perhaps saying the maximum amount of recruitment attempts would fill the same purpose though?

Both versions are produced by the same company, so I imagine it's easier/cheaper to film at the one location in Scotland and fly the US contestants out! I think a few early seasons of The Circle were filmed the same way, though when the UK version of that was cancelled, they moved filming from the UK to the US!

I really like the video and its really interesting to hear you talk about season 2. 😁 But there are loud noises in the background that are hard to listen to. Im not sure if its just my weirdly sensitive ears but i have to pause a lot just to give my ears a break from it. I wonder if it have something to do with the music? Its sad because it makes listening to the video difficult when i was re😮ally interested to hear what you where goint to say. 😔

Apologies about that! I can't hear anything myself, but I wouldn't put it past me to accidentally leave something like that in! Here's a quick recap for you, in the event you're still interested in what I said throughout the video! -Following Season 1, there were calls to repeat the format with the same cast, which I found to show a lack of faith in the casting performance to pull it off again. Thankfully, this season had all the same merits in the cast and then some from last season! This season offers a different flavour to Season 1 rather than treading overly safely, to it's benefit/longevity! -Challenges this season felt a little better compared to last year, and the final challenge's production was really good! Lessons were clearly learned from S1, and that shows throughout the whole show. -The show's production is still top notch! Meg's elimination was well crafted as my main example, especially with the use of footage/music. The audience know she's next to be eliminated by default, though the contestants are unaware of this and assume it's still a 50/50 between her and Paul. Going into it, they show clips of people still suspecting her following the Round Table, and even a clip of her saying she isn't ready to leave yet. The music that plays here is 'Vampire' by Olivia Rodrigo, with lyrics selectively chosen to play instead of the instrumental at key points, with the main one featured being: "Castle built of people you pretend to care about", which suits the show well, particularly in this scene IMO. -We are told that the Traitors are allowed to recruit up to a maximum of 3, which I said concerned me of being overpowered going into the endgame. Though thankfully it didn't end up being exploited this season as the Traitors were so willing to throw each other under the bus, which led to later recruits distrusting them immediately. -The poison chalice twist was well done, with Diane being the one eliminated making it a whole extra level of iconic. Combined with the fact she wasn't out immediately and the following challenge was her leading her own funeral march, and the whole saga certainly was a highlight! Her son still being in the game also allowed for a potential revenge plot to come into play to add an extra layer to things. -After looking it up and mentioning it in the S1 video, I can say confidently the show's welfare seems to be more than prepared to handle things! -The finale had a lot of emotions going into it, especially following the really nice part where the finalists had food together and got to properly know each other. That said, it made the fact you knew not all of them could win all the more heartbreaking! It was also an absolute cultural event, with viewing figures being huge and having steadily grown throughout the season. Being a regular TV show also allowed for watch parties, etc to further help w/ popularity! -Online app was available to place predictions on finalists and banishments/eliminations. -Traitors Uncloaked was a good way to follow up each episode, with celebrities, past and current contestants all appearing to comment on that night's events. Seeing the Traitor reveal to the two recently eliminated players was also a really cool extra bit of content! -Traitor Cloaks from the official manufacturer and a board game are available to purchase online/in stores, and the original music from the show is available on streaming services! An official map was also made based on the show in Fortnite, speaking of which, some of the music in this season coincidentally overlapped with the featured tracks in that game's rhythm mode which I found funny! -Applications are also currently still open! (The closing date was extended) -I also shouted out a really great video that covered the first season that runs for just over 3.5 hours, if you search 'How the Traitors UK Stole My Heart' you should be able to find it! I think it's also linked in the end screen of the video and as a card here too. Once again, apologies if something slipped through the cracks that I just couldn't hear, but hopefully you still found what I had to say interesting! I'll try keep an eye out for stuff like that going forward, or at the very least do my best to keep it to a minimum through whatever means I can!

i watched season 1 when it came out and i thought it was terrible. there's a much older tv show called "the mole" which did a very similar idea, but a lot better, and i would recommend watching it if you haven't already. the things that it fixes are, it gives the mole a different set of objectives from the group, meaning there is something for them to go on to deduce who it is, and also people aren't eliminated arbitrarily with no way to protect themselves - the players are eliminated based on a quiz about the identity of the mole. maybe i'll give season 2 of this a ago though
