For context. This was an early BBS like system. The default password for everyone was 1234 (and fixed to 4 numeric digits) and almost no one changed their passwords. There was no prompts to do so, no reminders and unless you could be bothered to look around for an option to change it you wouldn't even know you could. This is how Prince Philips mailbox was routinely read and 2 people were arrested for it, but it wasn't actually illegal at the time.

I guess you don't realise that the majority of hacking is NOT social engineering, that's just a division of hacking, and while it can be used to hack into anything, a lot can also be done by simply finding vulnerabilities in outdated software, or even 0days in up-to-date software, there is also brute forcing. And like the reply that is above me already says, it is cracking and it's one of the least technologically skilled methods of hacking too.

@@aus752 oh also you're both just straight up wrong about hacking vs cracking. They might hack a system for a specified purpose or for obtaining more knowledge out of it. Crackers are people who hack a system by breaking into it and violating it with some bad intentions." So they're functionally the same, it's about intent. Did you even look up hacking vs cracking? Cuz it makes it pretty apparent that they're essentially the same methodology Hacking is a term for white hat hacking, cracking is a term for black hat hacking

Of course it’s not still valid. Not only that, but I don’t imagine nowadays you could simply gain access to their network without having a device that’s authorized. Granted, I have very little knowledge of how these things really, truly work at their core, but what I do know is that it’s significantly more, and will continue to be evermore complicated to “hack” any major network like this. So many layers of security. Even for an average person for example, if they have 2-factor ID enabled, they could tell straight-up tell you the password to their email. However, without some serious skill and/or other info/physical access to my device, the password alone wouldn’t do you much good, and as far as I know, getting past 2FA is nigh impossible, save for maybe some exploits that are only known to a very, very small number of people/government agencies.

Also depending on the hackers' hat. White hat: Looking for a job, and help out tightening up security where they can. Nicest people around. Gray hat: Self interest, sometimes wants to steal something small from a target (like a program, data, or any media), sometimes just "for the lolz". If you can speak at their level, they're pretty chill. But also they can be egocentric in nature. Black hat: Extremely malicious, they have one set of goals in mind. Destroy and profit. If you're not fully with them, you're their enemy.
