The Battle of Lechfeld, 955 AD ⚔️

When in 955 AD a 20.000-strong force of Magyar raiders besieged the city of Augsburg, Saxon King Otto I gathered an army to expel the Magyars. The 955 Battle of Lechfeld was an iconic battle. It led to the permanent end of Magyar raids who eventually established the Christian Kingdom of Hungary. It also was one of the fundamental events that led to the creation of the Holy Roman Empire.

This is such an underappreciated part of the European history. The Magyars were basically the "Vikings on horseback", causing approximately as much trouble for the continental Europe, as the Norse did in the same period. Basically the main difference between them is that they didn't affect the British Isles, and that's enough to be so much less remembered by the general public. They were also the only ones of the many nomadic peoples that came to Europe from the Steppe in Early Medieval period, that established a lasting state when settling down, while keeping their language and not assimilating with others (like the Turkic Bulgars). It was likely the other way around, people already living in the Pannonian Basin assimilated with the Magyars. BTW great video! Is it the first time you made such detailed, animated battle plan, or am I forgetting/imagining things?

Fun fact: in an old Hungarian legend, after the battle, sitting on his throne Otto asked the captured Lehel (or Lél) what was his last wish before he dies. Lehel replied that he wanted to drink wine from his drinking horn. So be it, said Otto, and his servants gave the horn to the tricky Lehel. At that moment Lehel jumped forward and hit so hard the head of Otto that the horn broke and the victorious emperor died at the same time. It was the revenge of the brave Lehel for the massacre. According to another tale, only seven warriors (fairy-tale number) came back from the battle to their homes, but they were humiliated and killed by their fellow tribesman because they left Lehel and Bulcsú but they should have died with their fellow warriors. Btw nice vid, thank you. :)

The Hungarian word árpa was borrowed from a Turkic language before the times of the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin (at the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries), from Proto-Turkic *arpa.[5][6][4] The Hungarians cohabited for centuries with Turkic people, which accounts for over 10% word roots in modern Hungarian being Turkic. In Hungarian, most pastoral terms are Turkic in origin, and agricultural terms are 50% r-Turkic. Many Hungarian names, and also animal and plant names,[7] are of Turkic origin, and the majority of tribe names were of Turkic origin.[8]Turkic is, along with Uralic, German and Slavic, one of the four languages that have the greatest percentage of word roots in the Hungarian language. However, the Magyars are not a Turkic people, though the Turks made a genetic and linguistic contribution.[9][10]

Gyula was not a person at that time and shouldn't be mentioned as such. Gyula/dzsula/jula was the second highest rank of tribal Hungary. Arpad was the kende(kündü in some sources), a de jure leader of the people. The Gyula was a de facto military commander, his word superceded the Kende in military matters. Last we had the horka/Harka, who was usually responsible for handling issues with allied tribes and leading them in battle along the main army.

But I think that the accounts about the Hungarian infantry fighting in battles, was made by somebody who did not saw Hungarian warriors, and maybe misunderstood something he heard about them from those who told him the story of the battle. Or, maybe some Germans or Slavs too fought in the Hungarian army? If so, only those could be on foot.

@@szalard AFAIK the foot troops were moravian slavic auxiliaries. It was common for nomadic armies to use conquered locals to do the dirty work, like building siege equipment or acting as foot troops/meatshield. Mongols did the same with the Chinese, and the Tatars with Rus.

His English is really good. Although it's as though he is saying one long sentence. Some half second pauses every now and then would make the vid even better 👍

This video seems well produced and researched, but I do feel the narrator would benefit from talking slightly slower, or allowing each sentence to be separated slightly.
