The Batagaika Crater : A warning sign for the Earth

Ғылым және технология

The Batagaika crater, the world's largest 1-km long permafrost crater, is expanding at a baffling rate due to the thawing of the permafrost. This has been exacerbated by global warming.
Permafrost is any ground that remains completely frozen-32°F (0°C) or colder-for at least two years straight. Permafrost is most common in regions with high mountains and in Earth’s higher latitudes-near the North and South Poles.
The crater is located in the Sakha Republic and reaches depths of up to 100 meters. In the 1960s, after deforestation led to the melting of the underground permafrost, it caused the land to sink. Over the years, the crater has only expanded and is locally called 'the cave-in' or ‘mega-slump’ by scientists.
Russia is warming about 2.5 times faster than the rest of the world. As a consequence, the long-frozen tundra that covers 65% of the country's landmass is melting. This is releasing greenhouse gasses like methane stored in the thawed soil which is 25 times more potent than Co2.
The thawing permafrost causes very tangible, immediate infrastructural damage as well such as buckling roadways, splitting houses, and disrupting pipelines. When a wildfire breaks out, the thawing fastens.
Scientists are unsure of the exact rate at which the Batagaika crater is expanding. However, they warn that the soil beneath the slump contains dangerous amounts of organic carbon that will be released into the atmosphere as the permafrost thaws, further fuelling the planet's warming.
The Batagaika crater in Russia has now become a very glaring symbol of the impacts of global warming today.

It started slumping in the 1960s(per video), and the slump will be accelerating as the earth warms. So I'm guessing that the last doubling in size took something like 10-15 years, rather than (60/2)=30. So it's not been big and notable for that long.

Until ecosystems collapse & humans start dying and/or migrating in their millions we will not take human induced climate change seriously. And, of course, by then it will be too late. The hubris of man may be a decade or a century away but it will engulf us before the majority of mankind take it seriously. Until then humans will profits and power will control human life until nature reeks her terrible revenge. Unfortunately U could change the title to say anything and I don't think it will change 1 person. This is no disrespect to the person who wrote it but the comment below "Or is it just a normal process ". I'd like to ask that person or anyone else who thinks that way something but I'm going to address that very question. YES! It is 100%, the earth cooling & warming is a natural cycle. But we also know the "NORMAL" warming & cooling cycles do not happen this fast, that in the last 100 yrs or so some reports have our current warming up to 175% faster then normal. I totally get there is SO much information out there with different number's & understand why u can say that! I'd like to make a couple of comments then ask a question. 20, 30+ yrs ago "most" of people who today are making that statement "or is it just a normal cycle" are not asking a question? Most we the one's completely denying climate change then. So I guess there has been "a little" progress. We do know & I don't think ( maybe I'm wrong) that most people would agree Co2 does cause warming. Just about every cause of the earths normal warming cycles were caused by a increase in Co2 in the atmosphere or the earth's tilt which is also a normal cycle but one were not in. Most scientists also believe we should be in a cooling period not a warning. I think any reasonable person that doesn't have a agenda has to admit we can only put so much crap in our air, ground, lakes & oceans before in has a major effect. If we find out tomorrow that an asteroid 6 miles long same as the dino killer was heading our way and would crash in 2075 and we could stop it but would have to make a few changes, most of them you wouldn't even remember in a few years, would you? Or would you say screw it, it's part of earths natural cycle. Happen to the dyno's, happened 1,000 of times before that its God's will, a natural event, I'm 50 and will be dead so let my kids and there kids worry about that shit?? We know Co2 is the major cause, we know burning fossil fuels is the #1 contributing factor. We know that causes the wild fires to get worse, killing more trees that take in the Co2 and give out oxygen, we know the warming is melting the ice which causes less of the sun's rays to reflect the earth so more heat gets absorbed and the methane question we know our permafrost is melting releasing more warming gas. So in fact we know we can't 100% stop it but even if u don't believe all the crap we have put in the earth is the cause you have to admit if we put less of it then it will help slow it down or just maybe stop the earth from getting so hot that our grandkids, maybe great grandkids will have a planet somewhat what we know it today. Do you know what the hottest planet in our solar system is??? Most would probably guess Mercury, I certainly would have at times. It's closest to the Sun, that makes total sense! NO it's Venus. You know why? The atmosphere is Co2 and it traps all that heat from the sun. That's what's happening to out atmosphere Co2 goes up, heat gets trapped, everything else snowballs. I know we always hear about Mars, could we live there, was there life there, ect. But many experts believe Venus was the planet. It's almost the same size as earth, in the "goldilocks zone" even thought to have had lots of water but it didn't have the iron core creating the magnetic field. Co2 cause by extreme Volcanoe activity, caused the planted to warm, causing the water to evaporate causing the greenhouse gas atmosphere today. It's out closst planted, most like earth but we can barely send a robot there. I'm sorry I got long winded. Let's put aside politics, by the way I'm a registered Republican, Vet, own 2 guns. I'm not a crazy hippy! Lol.. I just believe in facts and don't believe something just because someone with a (R) or a (D) next to their name said it Both have agendas! We the people, Let's make OUR agenda on this topic about leaving the next generation a chance to raise their kids above ground with birds, fish & all the wildlife today! What's the worst that could happen?

Blah, blah, blah. You do realize we have been keeping accurate records only for the past one hundred years or so, right? That's not even the blink of an eye on a geological scale. Anything prior to that is merely supposition by learned experts making educated guesses, and the further back they look, the more they must "guess." Besides, even the most knowledgeable person on the planet still has an incomplete picture and does not come even close to fully understanding of the complexities of climate dynamics. We should not blindly rush out and base any of our political policies on "What Might Be," being based mainly on highly questionable and heavily politically influenced "science," just because some guy in a lab coat says so. When politicians with hidden agendas begin fomenting panic under the guise of "helping," it should be taken with a grain of salt. At the least, it should be questioned. After all, science is about asking questions, even of the orthodoxy.

To correlate this to man made carbon dioxide is a bit of a stretch, given man-made co2 constitutes some 5% of total emissions, the other 95% being naturally occurring. Together they constitute some 0.04% of the atmosphere, and last time I checked the known properties of co2 and the laws of physics had not changed. Water vapour is by far and away the greatest ‘greenhouse gas’ (erroneously titled, but we can park that), and absorbs energy across the entire spectra range, not just within the very narrow band where co2 can absorb heat. Carbon dioxide is itself absorbed (one of the most soluble gases on the planet) in under 9 years, and adding more does not increase its extremely limited capacity to absorb warmth or raise temperatures. 😔 Don't know when humans will understand this on a deeper level & start taking responsibilities. Well the exact cause of the Batagaika crater is still being investigated & will see, but anyhow climate is still playing a role in anyway!☝️

12000 years ago, permafrost covered most of the Northern Hemisphere. But that thawing of millions of square kilometres was natural and this pathetic amount of thawing is the man made end of the world. Ok Einstein

Our planet has cycles 12,000 yrs apart and we are due for this major change of magnetic poles flip and the warming of the oceans due to the volcanoes in them with a mini ice age ahead…our sun has micro novas too, which are left out of the forecasts

...and the massive amounts of CO2 are man-made, with man-made effects. The Petrochemical Industry have known this for decades, but preferred profit and status quo. So, they had a long term and secretive plan to discredit the research that was coming out more and more from reputable scientists, which even went as far as gagging many by pressure to remove research grants. And then dubious scientists given large grants by the Petrochemical Industry of course found all these other 'potential' cause and effects, similar to yours, to explain it away. Then the lovechild of the Petrochemical Industry- Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp sold the story for decades - nothing going on here. Character assassination of good scientists with solid evidence that the industry knew was correct but was not going to let out. For decades we could have acted on climate change but for the pre-meditated obstruction and character assassinations by the Petrochemical Industry and Rupert Murdoch. They are one of the biggest causal agents of how we are in this situation now.
