This is such a well made, informative video! I'm a game dev working on a retro inspired game, so this was absolutely perfect to stumble upon as I'm starting to focus on audio. I definitely appreciate the attention to hardware limitations & being faithful to the original sounds, so A+ from me. P.S Give the band "Crying" a listen, they use chiptunes in their songs pretty frequently :D

Phenomenal! Would love to check out the game you’re working on! And I certainly will- honestly, some chiptune albums are masterpieces and very underappreciated!

I reconstructed Commando using Cubase, with Arturia Synths, guitars (played by me) and Superior Drummer 3, Rob Hubbard was quite pleased with the result.

there's also famistudio now , deflemask and ... supergoattracker too :)

sorry to be a stickler, but the NES is 4 channels. Samples are played on the 4th channel which is also the noise channel. Samples on Sega Genesis are played on the 6th channel which is also an FM channel. There is a second chip in the Genesis that was used in the master system. Four channels = 3 squarewave, and 1 noise.

3:54 - "I don't trust this thing (Game Boy) to last as long as this thing (Macbook Pro)" Yeah, I dunno... Plenty of DMGs still working great after 30+ years. Last laptop I owned died after about 10. The one before that maybe about 5. The one before that was an Apple Powerbook, and... I don't think it ever really broke down, but it was on the wrong side of the PowerPC/Intel divide so commercial support for that one ended after about 3 years and I moved on. (But seriously, though, I love old hardware, and I enjoy working with it, but modern hardware can make it way easier to work on this kind of stuff and to backup/migrate the data to keep it safe. It makes all the sense in the world to take advantage of that convenience, and only go the more complex route of dealing with original hardware if you actually want to.)

i got a keyboard for christmas, and i’m starting off with finding useful things like this video, and this one is my favorite out of all the other videos that i checked out. i like the way you explained things, i learned a lot from this single video - subbing right now. (my bad if i explained it a bit confusing, i tried lol)

Glad I could help! When you just start out, it can be frustrating trying to synthesize all of the information you take in. Keep at it- it’s well worth it!

I have a question. The new Game Prison City has a very cool soundtrack, that reminds me of the NES. But the sounds are sounding very guitarish and rock like. With Chipsounds or Super Audio Card, I was not able to create such sounds. I wonder how to get a guitar like sound out of the nes. I thinks it's impossible without a Saw wave, but some NES games had a guitar feel to it. Maybe you kow how to create them? Thanks for your time.

I remixed all my classic Reggae Chiptune tunes from a few years back. They all sound amazing now, please give them a listen!

There are free trackers to make chip music. Forget prologue chip-sounds, furnace tracker has everything you need as it emulates just about every sound chip ever, the only downside is that it does not export files that are playable on the original hardware. I have a few tracker suggestions, all of which are free, run on Windows and support exporting files for playback on original hardware : 1 Vortex Tracker 2 for ZX Spectrum AY tunes, 2 Beepola for ZX Spectrum beeper tunes, it emulates several different beeper "engines", 3 Raster Music Tracker for Atari 8 bit pokey tunes, 4 OCC Famitracker for NES tunes as it supports more "add-on" chips, 5 Snoozetracker for Sega Master System tunes, 6 Delfemask (the old versions of it are free) will let you do things like C64 SID, Sega Genesis, GameBoy and more, 7 Hivleytracker for AHX tunes.

While I am mostly an LSDJ guy, and have dabbled in other trackers as well, I wouldn't put down the plogue products so much. Chipsounds, and in extension their newer products, the Chipsynth line or plugins are still useful if you just can't get into trackers and are used to the workflow of traditional DAWs. Furthermore, those plugins allows you to use authentic sounding flavors of sound for productions outside of Chiptune. I know the Plogue guys personally, and know their dedication to old hardware, and to bring these to a crowd of producers, who otherwise, only could use off sounding waveform generators.

Ever since June 25th, 2021, I've been obsessed with chiptune music. On that day, a friend of mine sent me the Brick Meme (the audio cut off after minute 3, but the video was 2 months long... yeah...), which uses BOSSFIGHT's „Milky Ways” - my absolute favorite song! After discovering more and more amazing chiptune songs, I thought I'd like to make MY OWN music as well! I haven't really had time nor the means to actually start it, but now I can, thanks to you! So thank you so much for this little tutorial/informational video! (And if you're still into chiptune music, give a try to BOSSFIGHT's albums „Caps On, Hats Off” and „Nice Catch Biggy!”, as well as their song „Wobbly Tooth, Crunchy Apple”, you won't regret it!)

Good video! I've been using LSDJ for years, and using backup carts like Easy Flash Jr., Everdrive, EMS carts or Drag n' Derp is actually the most common way, apart from emulators people use LSDJ today. It has a lot of benefits compared to using the old official LSDJ carts too, like being able to patch in your own sample libraries or generally, being able to update the rom to a newer version. Deflemask should have probably had a mention in the video too, as it is one of the most versatile trackers out there. It has a mobile version too! Lastly, Chipsounds is pretty old by now ( still useful though ), and Plogue has been releasing a number of newer plugins like Chipsynth MD or Chipsynth SFC that emulate their respective console's soundchip very faithfully. Chipsounds, believe it or not, used a lot of sampling too, for several of it's chips.

one thing I love for authentic chiptune is furnace tracker. it supports nearly all retro consoles, as well as allows you to pick any combination of chips.

2:16 you actually flipped the sounds of Triangle and Sawtooth

The two VST plugins I use for my chiptune projects are 'NES VST' and 'Magical 8bit Plug'.

I'd also recommend KORG Gadget for Switch, which comes with two Gadgets that emulate and allow you to make music and sounds in the style of old NES and Namco arcade games. The Kingston one in particular is a VERY faithful recreation of the NES sound chip (though understandably PCM samples are not supported). Sadly, the only way to export the songs is to share them with another Switch owner with the game or to KORG Gadget 2 on a desktop computer if you own that program.

I mean, you could also just use like old Yamaha and Casio digital keyboards from before and around the vintage variations of those chips were going into consoles or computers, into anyway. I mean, it’s sound from a chip, no less.

Great vid! Thanks for imparting your knowledge. How do you feel about soundfonts? I use them in musescore, and have had a ton of success writing that way feel free to check out the 8 and 16 bit music on my channel. It was all made with that method

Honestly being pure and authentic is why this doesnt have any fillowing. When i hear pure authentic guys they sound like fucking shit. Chip tine mixed with modern sounds is where its at.

Good question! The program I’m using is Logic Pro, but plugins like this work with most Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). Google around- there are some good free ones!
