I was 12 when this song came out and even I had to stop and admire just how awesomely romantic this thing was. Heck, I think listening to this song is what first got me thinking how cool it would be to have a girl that felt like that about you.

I’m sure I read that this song was written with The Beatles in mind, and you can certainly hear it in the harmonies. They did a fantastic job. It’s been one of my favourite songs since I was a little kid.

Oh Angela, I believe an expression of love like this would be welcome at any age. In fact, I believe the song was written to appeal to all ages, the strings and harmonizing coming into play at the end of the song would perhaps appeal more to an older audience.

The Bangles' lead singer, Susanna Hoffs, co-wrote this tune. It seems that everyone, all around the world, can relate to it and love it. I met Susanna recently at a book signing. She was so nice.

It needs be said that the Bangles didn't have a lead singer. Hoffs got pushed by the label (not without reason; All the girls could sing, but Hoffs could SING, and she was by far the most marketable) and did most of their singles, but they all took their turns singing lead across the albums themselves (Debbi sang lead on Going Down To Liverpool, for instance). The label and media attention on Hoffs as the "lead singer" is part of what contributed to the breakup of the band in the first place (to her credit Hoffs didn't like that she was being promoted over the band, either).

This band never got the recognition they deserved. They all could play well, they had lovely four-pat harmonies, and they wrote great songs, but all some people saw was four beautiful girls in a band and treated them like a gimmick.

You hit the nail on the head when you said the song sounded like a "young love" kind of song...To me it was... As a kid, I couldn't let the guys know that I loved this song and applied it as me and my gf's (at the time) song. I mean, I was supposed to be a tough guy, right? .. someone who didn't lose himself in a sweet , romantic melody... I had a rep to uphold... y'know what I mean? But today, all these years gone by, I find myself not caring about who knows that I like the song. Of course my gf and I went different ways, with promises of getting back together, forever once basic training was done but that didn't happen. Listening to it today, I wonder what she did with her path in life and I wish that she found everything she thought she had in me and much more. God bless you Hilda, wherever you may be... ❤🤙🏾

I was working in record retail at the time, and the first single off that album “In Your Room” had just been released and was hitting the charts while the album had not yet been released. We, however we’re playing it frequently as a promo at the store before release and when I heard “Eternal Flame” as a cut off the album not only did I say that this would be the next single, but I also predicted it would hit number one. I was right on both counts.

As an 'old' now, I feel massive appreciation for the hi-level art produced by the Bangles, Go Go's & other all-female groups. Bangles had great vocals & writing. The Wilson Sisters, for their genre, r the goats. The Pointer Sisters & other legends I'm forgetting.

Hmm....The line "I watch you when you are sleeping..you belong with me" doesn't seem to me a line spoken mainly by adolescents.. although some do get themselves into a position to utter such words. "Eternal Flame " clearly makes me think mainly of adults in exciting romantic relationships.

This is a beautiful song, but it's also the only song to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart that led to the break up of a group. Unknown to the three other ladies and even to Susanna herself, the record execs starting pushing Susanna to the "front" because they said she was the most "attractive." The other members of the group basically started to have more fights believing at first this was Susanna's doing, as she was also trying to make it as an actress. How the execs treated The Bangles for some is the same thing that happened with The Supremes. Instead of just letting talented women be talented women, they pick one and start putting wedges into the others. Sadly, for the sake of making money, you wind up destroying individuals that were given a gift by God and putting your trust into someone who doesn't do it back for you.

As I understand it Hoffs herself didn't like being promoted as the frontwoman any more than the rest of the band did. I will say that Hoffs DOES have the best voice of the four. They're all incredibly talented, but while the other girls can sing, Hoffs can SING.
