One of the finest singers ever! Richard could make you smile, laugh or break your heart at the drop of a hat. So much soul and beauty in his voice. This recording is truly a treasure. I'll never forget the first time that I heard it when Jericho came out. Always loved his singing, but this one is one of the best. Shine on, Richard!

You said it sir!!! The undisputed king of Stratford Ontario and in my opinion, one of the top 5 voices that ever graced a rock record ever!!!

This song has been covered many times but Richard not only reworks the musical arrangement, his is the only version that swaps verses so that the drama of being in love with a married woman is saved for later in the song. It's brilliant . John Gorka performs Richard's version.

There should be no competition in art which includes music but we as listeners can have opinions and mine is as follows. Richard Manuel is the best Canadian singer of all time. Why you ask? Well because he has this relatable and accessible voice so we think after hearing whatever song we happen to enjoy Richard singing and the aftermath is did I just hear what I think I just heard. Wow he must live where he is singing about. The low and high notes hit. The emotion even when his voice got weaker because of excess partying. It belonged there in the song. He was born to sing and in my opinion doesn't get his due. His mother was a school teacher in Stratford Ontario so he had some classical training but I don't care how much classical training he received probably not a lot. He was born with that instrument his voice. He passive attitude and partying ways in the beginning moulded who he was but sadly in the end created his lonely demise without proper and deserved homage. No offense to Justin Beiber but if you asked any body about Stratford and the best singer from there you would most likely get JB as the answer with quite a few people saying Richard Manuel WHO? But after playing anything from Richard singing they all go what's his name again. If I ever win the lottery I would make two movies with my own money not to make profits or acclaim but to educate the public about the Atlanta of two lesser known musician. Richard Manuel and the more popular but so underappreciated and underrated Phil Lynott. Maybe I would make money from both movies because of their sheer talants being recognized for the first time for a lot of unknowing people. The world needs to know and to be showered by these two lesser known legends who were cut down by their own insecurities. Terrible shame. I hope I win the lottery I would make the homage to these singers who have taken up a lot of hours and happy memories for my ears and heart and soul. God speed boys.

I love The Band, first time hearing this one though. I love the song, also versions by Don Williams, and especially Ronnie Lane's Slim Chance; Ronnie's voice is so sweet and heartbreaking. Unlike Richard's version, but another beautiful soul singing a beautiful song. Thanks for uploading.x

Glad y' all discovered Jericho ,I have enjoyed this for 20yrs ,especially Country Boy that ends the record. This is Richard recorded before he passed and included on this album produced by Aaron "Professor Louie " Hurwitz . He also produced (and played on as well) the two subsequent Band releases High on the Hog and Jubilation all great additions along with Jericho to their catalogue . Check out the covers of Dylan's Blind Willie McTell and Springsteen's Atlantic City they are classic Levon Helm at his best ! The entire record is actually one of the great latter day masterpieces of this genre of music and highly regarded by their peers. The Jericho version of Blind Willie was the inspiration for the Allman Brothers live covers of the song which Im certain can be viewed on youtube ! God Bless youtube and y'all for liking the Band and this record!

No, it's Richard. The vocal and basic track was recorded years back before he died, Garth added his several parts to the basic track and they released it on the '94 album 'Jericho' as tribute to Richard.

I can see people who are new to the band because of the way any body could sing a verse at any time in a song. The song was the objective. For the betterment of the song not the musician or the singer. That's real art. Simplicity of the song that's it. Very rare. They didn't want you to notice. If they were noticed it was an honor to them because it meant the listener actually listened. It was as simple and vanity free as that. Sounds weird but it's the truth. Rariety is weird and different. Hard to grasp especially in this day and age. Refreshing.

I agree but to someone new to the band I could see people having a problem. I consider myself a ringer when it comes to the band. But when I was first discovering them I got confused with a couple of Richard and Danko songs. Think about even their most popular songs the weight for example. It was not the norm to have three people sing different verses words chorus. Some people caught it and some people didn't but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the song. It wasn't like we weren't listening. We were always singing along with them because we loved the actual song. They were doing things for the betterment of the song not the glory and we as a people weren't ready for that and to this day still aren't. Think about this if they could sing and not be noticed by cameras but just heard they would have been in their glory. Only blues singers can relate and that's because of the nature of the blues and also sad to say a race thing. The band did not want the glory that came with creating music. But when you create that kind of amazing music people want to know and they listened really carefully because of the whole until vanity setup. Born at the wrong time. Or should I say timeless like their music. Old souls of the likes we will probably never ever hear again. I am thankful we heard what we did. God speed boys. Oh Canada our true North strong and free. Lol

This is not Richard Manuel, this is Rick Danko. This cd came out in 1994. Richard committed suicide in 1986 after a show in Florida. He died in his hotel room during a mini- Band reunion. The song "Too Soon Gone' was written for him as a tribute. I was luck enough to see the Band in APRIL 95' @ the cain's ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I went to show with a fantasy that maybe Bob Dylan would make a special appearance (he didn't) but what a great show it was.

This is definitely Richard Manuel singing not Richard Danko. You can tell by his low notes he hits Danko could not go as high and definitely not go as low. Manual is more r and b Danko more country music inclined both amazing singers. Danko would do long black veil and loving you which is a Stevie wonder song which is as close to r and b as Danko would get.and the country twanging of it makes no difference stamps his country influence. Richard would sing a country infused song and somehow stamp a bit of r and b to it without trying. Check out lonesome Susie which Manuel brought to Robbie during the early stages of their massive recordings leading up to music from big pink. Even before Levin came back to the band while they were just getting used to living in Woodstock.
