The Báb’s Tablet about the Special Prophethood of Muhammad | Armin Eschraghi

The Báb, during the first years of His ministry, wrote numerous treatises in response to queries about Qur’anic verses and Hadith (purported sayings of Muhammad and the Imáms) and about theological themes. While in Isfahan, he was asked by the Governor of that city to address the issue of Muhammad’s specific prophetic mission. He was also asked about proofs to be adduced for the truth of Muhammad’s Prophethood. The Bab revealed a treatise of roughly 40 pages in response.
The genre of “Proofs of Prophethood” is well-known in Islamic literature. Yet, the Báb adopts a rather unusual approach. His explications do not seem to contain proofs in a more narrow sense of the word. The Báb does not specifically and primarily address the historic person of the founder of Islam. Rather, He appears to meditate on the spiritual nature of the Manifestations of God in general and on the process of revelation.
We will try to give a short introduction to the history and background of the Báb’s “Treatise on Specific Prophethood”, and then investigate whether this text, like all early Writings of the Báb, might also be read, on a second layer, as a promotion of the Báb’s own claim to receiving Divine Revelation. The talk will thus give an outline of the the Treatise,and also provide some general observations on the Báb’s Writings and on the approach that could be adopted when studying them.
Armin Eschraghi was born in Iran and raised in Germany. He obtained his M.A. (1999) and his Ph.D. (2004) in Islamic Studies from Goethe University in Frankfurt/Germany. He currently teaches at the Sankt Georgen School of Theology and Philosophy and at Goethe University. Among his publications are his dissertation on early Bábí and Shaykhí doctrine (2004) and his monograph on Bahá’u’lláh’s Epistle to the Son of the Wolf. He has also written several articles on the Báb’s and Bahá’u’lláh’s Writings in German, Persian and English language and is engaged in translating Bahá’í Writings into German.

    Wonderful presentation! On the question of tablets of The Bab addressed to Sunni scholars: in the extant manuscript sources there is a letter addressed to a Hanafi Imam and a larger address to the people of Mecca. I recall reading long ago that The Bab had also written letters to the leading Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali imams, but I haven't been able to find this reference, or any said letters to the charismatic leaders of the other Sunni schools of jurisprudence. In an early polemic written to defame and mischaracterize the faith, "Miftahu'l-Babu'l Abvab" by Mirza Mihdi Khan Za'imu'd-Dawlih, Za'imu'd-Dawlih produces the text of several letters of The Bab which have not appeared anywhere else in publications or in manuscripts to date. On the surface, these letters do sound and "read" like they are from the pen of The Bab, but this issue requires further study. One of the letters of The Bab in Za'imu'd-Dawlih's polemic is addressed to the Sunni mufti of Baghdad, Shaykh Mahmud al-Alusi, who incidentally was one of the signatories of the fatwa pronounced against The Bab condemning Him as a heretic, which also resulted in the imprisonment and eventual death of Mulla Ali Bastami, the second Letter of the Living. Alusi is the author of an influential Qur'an commentary "Ruh al-Ma'ani". The letter attributed to The Bab reads closely to later writings from the Maku and Chihriq periods and if authentic, was definitely written after His open proclamation to be the Qa'im and the inaugurator of a new dispensation. A later source indicates that Alusi quietly disassociated from his initial condemnation of The Bab and apparently grew to have a positive view and disposition towards Him. Tahirih had stayed in the home of Alusi during her stay in Baghdad and had many conversations with him on these issues.

    IT IS SUCH A PLEASURE TO READ BÀB'S PRAYERS AND WRITINGS, I JUST CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE TRANSLATION IS TAKING SO LONG.WE ARE SO FORTUNATE TO BE SURROUNDED BY HIGHLY ACADEMIC BELIEVERS.HOWEVER I AM SURE GOD WILL INTERVENE AND MAKE IT HAPPEN.

    This could be due to low bandwidth of the presenter's Internet connection, along with a camera that is not very high quality. Notice the distortions do not appear in the host's camera view.

    There is no comparison in the quality of consciousness between the Aleph in the Qur'an and the alpha in my letter to Mom.
