I'm genuinely surprised that none of the Power Stone games ever appeared on a Nintendo console. Those systems seemed designed with couch multiplayer in mind so neither game appearing on the Gamecube, Wii or Switch seems strange, especially with how focused Capcom was on the Gamecube at that time and how they're not shy about porting titles now. As for whether a Power Stone game could be successful nowadays? I think Gang Beasts and Party Animals' popularity shows there's still a market for these kinds of games, at least in the west, but unlike the arcade focused PS1 and PS2, I feel a Power Stone 3 today would need a continual stream of content like new characters and levels and I don't think Capcom would be willing to make that sort of commitment.

Someone talented get on that! 3) I'll always love Power Stone but dang it if I'm not looking at Urban Reigns with envy and wishing I got more time in Rumbleverse. 4) Check out Mighty Fight Federation and LastFight Both are 3D arena brawlers with a but more sauce on them but LastFight literally had what Power Stone 1 was having but also was having an affair with Smash Bros. 5) I subscribed because you talked about fighting games and made me feel feelings. Great video man. It really amazes me how many Capcom IPs are just languishing in limbo. They have so many great franchises that they refuse to touch anymore. It drives me crazy! DON’T THEY WANT MY MONEY!? “Power Stone has no block or dodge button.” You’re technically right, but the game has a whole entire invincible dodge mechanic called “escape” that you can do just by tapping the control stick at the right time. In fact the (first) game has a ton of depth and hidden mechanics that are totally unique in this genre. It’s so rewarding when you take the time to learn them. At this point I can easily beat the game on the highest difficulty without breaking a sweat. Power Stone 1 has been one of my top 10 favorite games for more than 20 years and I still don’t think there’s ever been another arena fighter that comes close, not even the sequel.

Problem is cost. Capcom have grown so big. They can't afford to make small projects anymore. Every products need to have heavy investment to it. And i doubt that power stone could benefit from insane investment. And even if it does, capcom still have to weight it's importantness against other major franchise capcom own. I hate secret mechanic in pvp game, tho. It just feel unfair to play against something you don't even know possible. Altho, it could probally be fixed nowadays with the internet. But still i'd think devs are smarter now and avoid secret mechanic as much as possible

It’s been done many times before by many big time publishers INCLUDING Capcom, so I’m sure they could manage. You just have to find the right devs.

I haven't played many fighting games, mostly just Smash. However. Custom Robo for the GameCube kicked all of the ass, forever. It's a 3D fighter where you fight with little robots in a virtual space. The "custom" part comes in where you get to swap parts of your robo out for different loadouts, and you unlock those parts through the story mode which is actually really good (read: it's anime as hell). Highly recommended by me, the guy that played Custom Robo a lot.

Both Power Stone 1 and 2 have a dodge system, from what I remember you have to flick the left stick/press the dpad either towards or to the side as an attack is about to land, somewhat like parries in Street Fighter. You can also catch thrown items (even bombs) with a well timed press of grab. In Power Stone 1 in particular, my friends and i got so good at catching and dodging thrown items, the mindgames around them got pretty nuts. And as for the dodge system, if you get a dodge then your opponent has to perfect dodge your next hit (if they attack straight away) or its going through. The timing of an attack after a dodge, in itself became another mindgame. tl;dr Power Stone has defensive mechanics, just not easy ones, and they're very rewarding to land

It's some what of a 3D fighting game mix with 2D fighting style like Tekken and your super is literally turning to the animal that the character possesses to do special move, the boss is pretty hard to beat and the characters are quite memorable, you should really check the game out sometime.

I feel obligated to mention a childhood favorite of mine - Bakugan: Defenders of the Core. It was a little on the simple side in terms of fighting mechanics, but (as long as my memory isn’t _too_ nostalgia-tainted) it was a pretty decent Wii game. It was also a Bakugan video game where you fought as building-crushing titans to save an alternate reality from the bad guys trying to steal the power of the planet’s core (though the writing is a little lazy and it isn’t quite as cool as that sounds). Basically, imagine Pokken Tournament but scale the fighters up to ten stories tall, and you’ve got a pretty good idea.

The 2 3D fighting games from my childhood that come to mind that I had a blast with are Ehrgeiz and Destrega. Ehrgeiz had an awesome fighting system, and the maps sometimes actually mattered if they had a small bit of elevation you could use to your advantage. The splash of FF characters was pretty cool, while the characters made for the game had character of their own. It was just an amazing game all around. Destrega on the other hand had all sorts of fun ranged energy powers for each character that were just insane when combined with the fighting. Blast someone from across the arena with a laser, or hit someone with a prismatic blast of light while they're running towards you. Or kill someone with literal charged up versions of your regular energy attacks that could be combined in different orders to modify their characteristics. My brother and I had a blast with this one and played matches that would last quite a long time with the dodging and blocking system they had in the game. Hell you could even deflect the energy attacks if you got good enough with the battle system.

Not a fighting game but a near and dear 3D game I felt like not many people heard about was a game called Kameo. You’re an elf princess that can become elementals with different powers (kind of like an early Ben10). The designs of almost all the elementals were amazing and so much fun to play as. The game was scheduled for a sequel but unfortunately the dev company shut down before making it. I’d love for you to check it out skooch, even if you don’t make a video of it, it’s a charming game that I’ve replayed many times and feel like you’d enjoy as well.

Kameo, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, and Viva Pinata are rather unsung Rareware titles that sadly didn't get the time to grow. Granted, part of the struggle is that they were clearly made with a Nintendo audience in mind when XBox was still competing for the family market instead of an almost exclusively FPS engine. If Kameo had been on the Gamecube, I imagine it would at least have been a moderate cult classic akin to Billy Hatcher instead of being deemed a stain on Rareware's reputation.

Ok so alot to say here since i play quite a lot of fighting games , you are partially correct yes 3D fighting games are not being made like they ones you talked about but we got a new type of them. The open arena type i guess think of games like For Honor (yes its a fighting game) also Naraka Bladepoint,Sifu,Absolver,We Who Are About To Die etc. What im trying to say is that that type of game never went away it just evolved most of the games i mentioned are doing very well. All these game have combos and juggle mechanics and a big play area that you can freely walk and fight on i strongly recomend you to go try them.

very nice video as always from best narrator skooch :3 Tbh for 3d fighting games I LOVED final fantasy dissidia. The fights were a bit different from what we usualy find. You had to do attacks that steal the enemy's ether (wich is the dmg they will deal with their next attack) then attack with one of your attacks that use your ether to actualy deal dmg. you can do combo's with follow up attacks that can be countered if you dodge at the right timing etc tec. They made great maps but most of them are kinda the same with the only danger from the map is the edge or falling in the endless abyss of despair. but it was still very fun. It was a special gameplay and maybe it wasnt as good as I think it was, but nostagia made me love it so much I also played five years ago a game on steam named Kurtzpel Had great coop PVE, great mekaniks with your character using two weapons and doing many combos by using many skills/attacks/weapon switch etc Unfortunatly it got bad It's now a very pay2win oriented game and most of the good contents are gone Anyway, love from France

I really like how they handled 3D space in Dissidia while also having very simple controls. It feels intuitive, falls in line with the canonical power level of its characters, but also had surprising depth (I remember in Duodecim learning tight timings on dodge cancel combos w/ assists).

Back when I had the OG Xbox, my brother and I were introduced to a 3d fighter called Barbarian, which while simple in world and story, ended up being fun enough in gameplay, if not fairly barebones. Most stages have areas of the environment that can be destroyed and lead to a second, and often third iteration of the stage in the same match. It also has a PS2 version, which I wasn't aware of until only a few years ago (side note: Much the same as the old dragonball games have games on the loading screens, try using both your thumbsticks on the loading screens for a fun little surprise)

Bruh most of these traditional fighters populations combined couldn’t equal 5 digits before tekken 8 came out on steam. The most popular fighting game according to real steam chart evidence even after tekkens release is a 3d, battle royale fighting game called naraka bladepoint, and its not even close. Now if for honor 2 came out with dedicated servers, it’d be up there too.

Castlevania Judgment. Admittedly, perhaps a bit too tongue in cheek for the franchise and a metroidvania is a weird one to base a fighting game on, but it was at least fun for the short term. Bit more hammering out the details for a sequel/2nd attempt, and it could at least been on the level of Skullgirls for a positive reputation, I'm sure.

I became a big fan of the River City Ransom series, with my favorite titles being Tokyo Rumble and Rival Showdown. Tokyo Rumble actually had a pretty interesting battle mode that I enjoyed playing, even though there were clear balancing issues. But they would later make a game called River City Melee Mach that really felt like a proper evolution of that mode. You get 30 teams, with 6 characters in each team, each with their own moveset. Some characters are way stronger than others, and some just broken, but it's a neat little game to try. That and Mighty Fight Federation. I decided to check it out since they had River City Ransom content (with an awesome remix of the main theme done by Tee Lopes and Gametal), and they had Miriam from Bloodstained, Toejam and Earl, and Yooka Laylee. I didn't get too deep into the game, but it seems like it took some inspiration from Power Stone. There's also Combat Core. I played it for a while, but that one was pretty much inspired by Power Stone, but I don't remember enjoying it too much.

Oh neat, a Zone 4 mention. Though, I'm a bit disappointed Fighters Club Online from KoG Games didn't get a shoutout, but that's understandable since that game never got a chance to come to the west. Not only that, but it didn't really get much promotion even when it was supposed to be launched over here. But to talk more about Fighters Club it also has mechanics and systems similar to Urban Reign much like Zone 4, however, Fighters Club leans heavier into an action anime kind of feel. You'd have a choice of 5 characters (Spike, Jack, Remy, Carmen and Zin) with two classes each. As you progress through the game you'd level up gaining more skills for that class in which those skills would assist in creating longer flashier combos. Much like Zone 4 it also has the body damage system from Urban Reign, but unlike those two which have a single attack button and a dodge button, Fighters Club has two attack buttons (Light and Heavy) and a block button (Can block high and low). On that topic, I don't have much more to say other than there's some videos up from when the game was still running in Korea, the game unfortunately came to a close and never made it to western territories. But its nice that you mentioned Zone 4, it unlocked some nostalgia for me, I used to play it back when it was hosted on OGPlanet. But most of my time was spent on another 3D fighter that was also hosted on OGPlanet back then titled Rumble Fighter (Side note: Rumble Fighter is still alive at the time of typing this it's just hosted by RedFox Games now). Though I had conflicting thoughts about both, Rumble Fighter had more 3D movement available to it allowing you to run, jump and double jump all over the stage, but the fights themselves felt kind of lacking. Still had fun with both games though.

I read '3D Fighting Games' and thought immediately of Urban Reign. Me and my friends used to play Smackdown Here Comes The Pain a lot when I was young and then we discovered this hidden gem of a game and never looked back. This game is insanely good! We still get together sometimes and play this even though my PS2 is long dead (long live emulation). It is a true timeless classic and the amount of fun and gut-busting laughter we've had from this game over the course of nearly 2 decades is immeasurable. If you want to extract the max amount of fun out of this game, you need to just get similarly skilled friends together (4 in all at max) and just play multiplayer. Me and my friends have spent entire days doing just that and it never gets old! I hope from the bottom of my heart that this game gets a remake or something because there has never been anything even remotely as good ever since. PS. I know every single character's name, favorite weapon and moveset by heart. My favorite is Shinkai with his Katana who can kill anyone in like 2 moves (1 if he's powered up). Closely following him are: Golem with his axe, Shun Ying with her Chinese Sword and her brother Lin Fong with his Saber.

For further context on Power Stone, you CAN dodge But you literally have to tap an attack or jump button in time with the attacker like a parry. In fact, a lot of actions are environment/context-based akin to Kirby's Air Ride. The design of the dive kick as one of the fastest movement options in Power Stone working only as a gap-closer and not a run-away tool at least works against camping But in Power Stone 2, the need to account for more than 2 fighters on a single map means that most of the innate lock-on stuff had to be taken out for more of a party-game styled element. 3D arena fighters without an innate 1 v 1 plane and lack of a robust lock-on dynamic such as Shrek Super Slam and Mighty Fight Federation suffer heavily from run-away-abuse-heaven.
