Based upon the support of GOP poseurs such as Frum and Liz Cheney for Biden and Obama's policies, doesn't that ring any alarms that maybe the old guard of both parties are now in total cahoots? And have been ever since the Nixon era.

The DoJ was paralyzed despite Geoffrey Stooge Clarke being rejected by threat of mass resignation. David Frum is a thinker. A rare former "conservative" that I greatly respect and listen to. This podcast was interesting and insightful. That Lindsey Graham morsel was telling.... Thank you, Al. Best Senator ever in my lifetime. Please run again. I have almost zero doubt that you'd win, Sir. Your intelligent ribbing of the blatant hypocrisy of the "other party" is missed and needed more than ever. You were the Jon Stewart of the Senate.... Please do what Jon did, and make a comeback... I know you're older.... But we all are.. And that seems to be what's in style, now. But the difference is, you still sound as young and sharp as ever.. Hey, Jon looks a bit older too. But he proved last week that he's lost nothing. Love you My Brother. But I gush, ha ha ha!

Shhhh he is a Canadian born journalist whose mother is still considered one of the best Canada has ever enjoyed. I am glad he is so well respected. Conservatives would do well to consider his opinions before acting like the feral pigs I'm seeing filling Conservative seats. Canada's last Prime Minister Steven Harper was unliked and is responsible for selling out many institutions bought and paid for by Canadian Taxpayers. After Justin Trudeau waved legal marijuana across the land and swept Mr. Harper out he went to the USA and sought out the likes of those same feral pigs I referred to. He quietly uses Provincial Conservatives. It seems like he has his arm so far up their arses he uses them like hand puppets, quacking the same quack to break down our strong healthcare, education and transportation systems. The federal Leader who looks like Alfred E. Neuman is his mini me, who appears to copy and paste MAGA talking points. Fortunately when he opens his mouth his "I want my Mommy" voice chops his legs out from under him.

I disagree with Frum's conclusion that institutions will defy Trump. The country is much different. Nixon resigned because GOP leadership no longer supported him. Today's GOP does Trump's bidding.

  • @grownjohnboy

Nixon resigned before he was charged with the crimes he committed. After that his lobotomized underling pardoned him in a manner that only GAWD would try to contest. When your top general called China on his own to say don't worry about the grunting coming from the orange feral pig I would call that defiant. When The major Unions say don't let the door hit you on the way out I would suggest defiance. It appears to me the rants after every court appearance against your Justice system by this feral pig is interpreted by him as defiance. World leaders almost unanimosly stand against him which suggest the opposite of support. Maybe your defiance in the face of facts is maligned and misguided or intellectually bankrupt.

There are few people whose views I respect more than David Frum's. I take his point about the chaos, perhaps slowing Trump's revenge tour. However, David posits the idea that Trump won't just be able to order people to perform illegal acts. He suggests that those people will be deterred by their own criminal liability. Unfortunately, what David fails to factor in is Trump's pardon power and his willingness to abuse it to achieve his own ends. He's already demonstrated this propensity in the past and has made no bones about doing so again in the future.

This is why Journalists and Representatives of the people are the first to suffer when they Report facts in evidence before those who are only interested in evidenced fact. Journalists and Legitimate Representatives do not survive long-term against the Darkness of intentional ignorance and secrecy in criminal dictates. Truth, and those who represent it are the first and continuing victims of the Forever War? It was ever thus.

You missed something fundamental on Immigration. You only looked at our half of the equation. The other half is that life in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, etc. is messed up because of violence and insecurity. They are being forced into gangs. What few jobs there are pay a pittance. Their lives are hopeless, so they risk the coyotes ao come here and then risk all of the horrible things we impose on them to stay and work. If we helped them in their home countries so that they had some hope for the future, they would stay. We keep pushing for more isolationism, but the most economically viable path for us and them is to help them. It is also the most humane path, but we have relinquished our humanity and any real sense of morality.

Drumpf casually used unconfirmed Cabinet Secretaries for the end of his term. Would Al tally how many and for how many months? I have no audience to whom I could trumpet it if I did do the homework. [edit] My expectations are up because I recently read _Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them_ . That digging and tabulating would have been assigned to Team Franken.

No, I disagree Al, the GOP does not want the government to work. The GOP voters/clients, I talk to want the government to be dismantled. There is serious cognitive dissonance happening on both sides of the tennis court right now.

I agree with much of what Frum says regarding the resilience and professionalism of the administrative state but with the following caveat. I hate to bring up the 1930’s for the umpteenth time but I worry that a genuine or ginned-up “security crisis” could actually stampede a weak-minded Congress into passing some superficially vague version of Germany’s 1933 Enabling Act which was basically the legal cornerstone of Hitler’s absolute dictatorial power. USA has more and more engaged in a “shoot now ask questions later” reactive mindset ever since 9/11 and with a progressively weaker and weaker Congress, citizens have been getting progressively more comfortable with more power resting with the chief executive.

I assume I am not the only independent (voting mixed ticket, 2020) that has started voting straight Democrat ticket, for me until Repubs get their act together + 4 years to make sure they were not lying. Create legislation after having hearings with experts and regular folks experiencing the issues, and select 2 or 3 Congress members to really delve into the issues and solutions, these 5 minutes speeches are not working. I want work horses not show ponies.

Damn, I guess I missed one--for a change. While Mr. Frum raises a good point about the chaos unleashed by a second Trump Presidency preventing him from accomplishing much or being able to establish himself as a dictator, I am worried that the chaos he unleashes, combined with a dysfunctional national government, may lead to a future, more competent strongman or woman taking control in order to "fix" things. A U.S. version of the Weimar Republic, as it were.

Why isn't a government that collapses in the way David Frum envisions - rather than as we gog-goos fantasize - just as bad, right? A government that has operated on general "consensus" - however high- or low-minded the agreements individually have been - will not work at all and the ensuing havoc will kill lots of folks - 😢

Concerned Brit here; I'm with those citizens scared; it's a constant battle to see all the faults in the liberal West, America, Israel constantly exposed, condemned, marched against today (anti Vietnam War protestor here!) which does not realise the real dangers. Which now includes those within, didn't happen since Mosley, (UK) Fritz Kuhn, (US) pre WW2. From Putin, Iran, Hamas etc (sadly, a majority of people mostly in the last) both extremes of the world's political spectrum* are appealing to humanities worst instincts. And are frighteningly successful; please vote Blue, whatever you do. (*The US has Zero "left" political extremists; apart from their Israel blind spot)

If the cases have not been tried before he becomes President don't they go on hold until after his presidency. I thought you can not put a current President on trial until after his term. I'm really curious if he can pardon himself. I can't see that the court would be okay with self pardons. Opinions....
