The Astronaut's Astronaut | A Tribute to John Young

Фильм және анимация

“The Astronaut’s Astronaut” is John Young (1930-2018), veteran of Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle; ninth of twelve moonwalkers; one of only three men to fly to the Moon twice; the first to command a crewed American spacecraft on its maiden test flight.
This -- whatever it is -- is in his honor.
It was created during dark times in the United States, when one man’s cruel murder triggered the righteous fury of millions, pent up over long years of abuse and injustice; when disease killed one hundred thousand and more in mere months; when a President sowed division and hatred when peace, empathy, and the righting of wrongs were so sorely needed.
This is not the America to which John Young aspired. This is not the America whose name was emblazoned on Saturn Vs surging forth from the clutches of the earth, or whose flags were planted long ago, peacefully, in the soil of another world.
In extraordinary times, Young was an extraordinary man. For one brief period in our history, his achievements in space, and those of his colleagues, transcended their origins in the striving of rival governments. He sailed through darkness to point us toward a brighter future -- one defined by exploration, scientific inquiry, and a union of humans as humans, not as warring races and nations.
As we grapple in 2020 with the consequences of what America is, Young represents the spirit of what America could be: a leader in progress, in commitment to the Earth and to humanity’s future beyond it. An America one could truly be proud of without reservation.
We’ll need more John Youngs to get there.

It's when you see footage such as these brave pioneers of Space, you realise how NASA have dragged their feet for the last 50 years....

Blame Presidents and Congresses since JFK for not funding human space flight and that included the Space Shuttle which had many different designs from several contractors which if funded as well as the F-35 ($1,5 Trillion to develop) would have produced a fully reusable Space Shuttle with a winged and manned larger first stage with an attached shuttle orbiter. The larger first stage winged vehicle would land back at a runway just like the shuttle orbiter with propellant tanks INSIDE both vehicles. No insulation foam. No Solid Rocket Booster each one with 4 field segments with o-ring gaskets. The Congress funded DOD building the F-22 Raptor which was first really used in combat during the American helping the British and French's "war" with Libya. The F-22 Raptor and the extremely costly F-35 Joint Strike Fighter have yet to really prove themselves in actual combat with a major adversary while the very underfunded Space Shuttle program enhanced what humans could accomplish in low earth orbit working to service/repair satellites, the Hubble Space Telescope, and building the International Space Station. a 30 year program that only cost $200 Billion of that time compared to the outrageous cost of getting the bugs out of the F-35 fighter at taxpayer expense of $1.5 Trillion!!
