The trick to the sequencer was to resample your sequences. Pain in the ass but combined with the effects was to me a great way to get around the sequencer issue. My hardest joints ever was all done on the asr x!! 🔥🔥💪🏿💪🏿

My first serious sampler. Thanks for doing this video. I took this sampler for granted because as you said when I got it in 99’ the MPC 2000 was the standard so it made us ASR X PRO users feel like we were coming up short. The sounds were raw and gritty with a feature that allowed me to drop the bit rate from 16bps to 12bps like the SP 1200. The bass was good and the unit gave my kicks some good punch. Then we had the EFX! Amazing and easy to manipulate the effects on this unit are second to none. At the time I thought that all samplers had this feature which I later learned wasn’t the case. Issues were the knobs and as you stated the sequencer. Very frustrating but I ended up recording and sequencing with Cakewalk. After sitting in my garage for about 10years the unit began to freeze and act up a little which led me to cop another sampler…the MV8000 which is a beast of a machine. I “lent” out my ASR X PRO to a friend and a year later I’m actually missing my red box. Your video is on point!

25 Years using the Ensoniq ASR X and first started using Samplers such as Akai S900/950 and the MPC 60 in the late 80's in London in studios whilst recording early UK Rap and hip hop and have since used most brands of Samplers at the time including E-Mu, Roland, Yamaha, Casio etc and without doubt the it's best Sampler I've used and I still have a Roland S750. Nothing is as quick and immediate, you press start then stop and it's loaded your sample in the scratch pad, you assign it to as many pads as you like then start editing. It's not just the sound, the ease of use, but the workflow is intuitive and it's so easy to resample that you almost have to. Yes we all know the sequencer wasn't tight like an MPC but I don't particularly rate the ASR 10 samplers sequencer either. but you could certainly use the sequencer and once you understood it's strengths and weaknesses it's pretty decent with a lot of options. If you maxed out sample time then best thing is to resample and in this day and age with DAW's I would suggest you send your audio once you've edited it to a daw and sequence in there it saves time and allows you to maximise the power of the ASR X which is in it's Sampling, Resampling, Effects and modulation capabilities which are second to few if any. The stock sounds are decent and the expansion cards are good, you have access to EPS 16 plus and ASR 10 sounds plus Akai S1000 and Roland S750/760/770 sounds, it reads WAV and AIFF and if you are midi inclined hook it up to an external sequencer and you're good to go though I did sometimes find the timing would still be off hence just sample then send the audio to a DAW for sequencing duties. It really is the best all in one Sampler from the days of hardware in my opinion and I have had a whole lot of studio and home studio experience.
Ensoniq was a legendary company. Most everything they produced was unique and/or groundbreaking for it's time. Most people don't comprehend the capabilities of the ASR. It is far more than a sampler. Among other things, it's capable of becoming a transwave synthsizer...which is the technology they would expand on with the Fizmo...which I own and is probably the most unique sounding synth I own out of the 10 in my collection.

That would be a good one. I was gonna get into the digital recorders.
are there the 4 dsp's in there? Everytime i see a DP/4 for a decent price, either i dont have the money, or for some dumb reason i miss it. you can get an asrx for less than a DP/4, but i think i read it was more like a DP/2 inside. those fx are a must have imo. Maybe i'll get to catch a DP/4 before i'm 50 lol...

i have the ASRX-pro! legitimately sounds better than digitakt and some of the sampling, chopping, and especially resampling workflow is better too. however the sequencer is horrifying and the file storage is pure 90s. but the sound absolutely slams.
I remember Large Professor was using the ASR-X for awhile.

It was always the obscure not really mainstream type of producers that used the ASR-X. Never really understood that before but now I think I kind of do. The ASR-X arrived at a time when the boom bap sample and cut style was dying and the beat makers that were holding on to that style stuck with it while the others that were more progressive with their music stuck with the MPC and ran.
I like all those vintage pieces do one on the box mpc or compossers.
