The Artists of Gyumri | Turning A Difficult Past Into A Beautiful Future

While some might consider the arts not to be a viable career path, the work of artists is indispensable to creating a beautiful and colorful culture and expression of the times. Gyumri is Armenia's second largest city and is considered to be the the cultural capital of the country. While there was a devastating earthquake in 1988 that killed thousands of people and levelled the majority of the cities architecture, Gyumri's citizens are resilient in rebuilding the city to be even better than before. I was very honored to visit the homes and studios of 3 prominent local artists who are making positive changes in the city through their work. I hope you enjoy the video and you can learn more and support their work down below.

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): safetywing.com?referenceID=alinamcleod&Ambassador
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

Alina! I am so impressed by the quality and depth of this video!! In true documentary style, you have captured some of the most fascinating local content, giving not only the surface features of a city, but the heart and soul of her people, artists and history. Most of your videos are superior works, but this one somehow excels and graduates into the realm of major television quality - reminds me of something like CBS’ “Sunday Morning”, in North America. You have such mastery of the documentary art form! Just wow!! Amazing! Sending love and congrats!! Keep up the good work!

Exquisite video and interviews of amazingly talented Armenians! Khatchaturian is one of my all time favourite composers, and I was fortunate to have played in a simultaneous exhibition (He played against 60+ opponents!) given by former Chess World Champion (1963-69) Tigran Petrosian!

Absolutely delightful video. In loved with your Armenia series and the way you compose the whole video- the flow of music, images and story. Gorgeous and so beautiful, love the background music. It does make a difference and to me your content is so meaningful and impactful because you are not just skimming the surface and jumping from place to place chasing content and likes. Instead you do take your time to settle and feel the local vibe and experience it to allow you to create this great stories that are most of the time off the beaten track. I needed something like this as yesterday and today had disappointing experience where youtuber that I liked and respected reached absolute low in a chase of sensational content, likes and more subs, but doing so he did something that I find disrespectful and tasteless to say the least. When you follow someone's journey for long time you become somewhat attached and you start to think you know them. Thank you for your great work and fantastic video!

I remember in 2019 they had a very big art festival near my work at downtown. So on my lunch break I went to check it out. I was so fascinated about so many talented and artistic pieces. I almost bough a piece a headless metal figure that costed 175 dollars (way out of my price range). We often forget that original art takes weeks , months even years to make but that other side of the brain says " do you really need this?"

The term starving artists is not just a catchy phrase but a sort of almost universal truth. Most artists have some sort of job to feed the body, while their art feeds their soul. Some find their talent recognized and can make a living solely by being an artist. But as the one man said artists are born artists. As you personally know artists create in their chosen medium because they have to create. When and if they find an audience for their work is really largely immaterial to the creation of the work. The artistic creations will occur anyway.

If you ever go to Tbilisi, Georgia , try to meet an painter named Alex Berdysheff. He is one of few unique Georgian artists. And thanks for showing artists in your video. It is so rare to find such travel video that digs into the artistic community of a place , delving deep into the culture of that region.

Alina you are an angel, I always wanted to go to Gumry and see the art world there, plz plz if you still in Shirak/ Gumry area, go to national maestro Minas Avetisyan’s museum in Jajurd; he was the 2nd best painter after Saryan back in Soviet time; you will love his works, best wishes and thanks a million dear Alina.❤️

Seeing the art of local artist isn't often featured in travel vlogs. This was so interesting. I felt inspired but also a bit sad that it's difficult now because of Covid. Hoping for better times in the near future.

Art can be a really powerful thing! especially in all eloquence, that's why you need to be careful not to offend the critics out there! especially when it comes to the truth. Thankyou Alina.
