While Miyamoto definitely deserves some credit he had more of an advisory role for the game, it was Eiji Aonuma who had the producers seat this time!

Look I have a lot of respect for the man(wish Nintendo respected their fans 😞) he did amazing things but there's new people now who are evolving with their customers

I winced a little every time Miyamato was credited instead of the actual leads. It's been said in other comments, but Aonuma has been in charge of Zelda for about 20 years now, and Fujibayashi was the director. You wouldn't describe Grave of the Fireflies as a "Miyazaki film" just because it was made by Studio Ghibli. Credit where credit is due!

To be accurate we would have to credit ''the creators'' in general as so many people were involved in this project. The unknown heroes who made the physics system are the real MVPs of this game tho.

I was about to leave the same comment, so sad to see that many still credit Miyamoto when he most often stands still and watches and just give advices to the teams. Good to see that more people than I thought are aware of this simple fact ! ^^

I was shocked

What I especially enjoy about the Gerudo Town design is that, in the words of Rango/the mayor, “He who has water, has power.” When the water of the village, the only water you’ll find in the desert, is literally flowing out of the chieftain’s residence, it shows that they are powerful.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily Miyamoto's work (or Aonuma's), but rather a "creation" philosophy within Nintendo. All their main games share (or try to share) this. From Super Metroid to Super Mario World to Zelda ALttP, to Ocarina of Time, to Wind Waker, to Mario Galaxy and Odyssey to Metroid Fusion and so on and on... These are all games that mark the player, there's always some hidden special quality to them that is hard to describe, the "Nintendo Magic".

I love Breath of the Wild, the game play's fantastic, the setting & character designs have that Studio Ghibli look. It truly is a masterpiece.

I've never played a zelda game but wow, do I really want to buy a switch just for botw now... I absolutely love artbooks and the creators process and breakdown of designs. Seeing this just makes me realize how thought out and beautiful the game is without playing xD

Try playing some of the older games first. It will make you appreciate all of the absolute F R E E D O M BOTW offers the player. Play Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and then play Breath of the Wild. You will be blown away by how much they threw away to make BOTW a reality.

This game means a lot to me, it was my way of escaping for a while and exploring a huge continent. When you talk about the game, it brings back a lot of memories and reasons why the game got me through some tough times. You really making me tear up lol.

you just described why Beedle is my favourite character. I love just how exited he gets everytime you see him, and how he's always happy even if you dont buy something, he's just 'thanks fopr your busness' as just looking is enough for him. BotWis my first LoZ and meeting beedle for the first time i instantly fell inlove with him. His cluttered back pack, the way we can tell how heavy ut is with the arching of his back when he walks with it on, but to contrast that, he still has so much energy to make these over the top expressions and movement with his body,. Pluse i just love his voice clips, after hearing some from other games he's been in, i just love his voice so much

I realise how great of a dad you are when I think about how meaningful the Zelda games I played in my childhood are to me.. You'll be overwhelmed with the amount of nostalgia and gratitude your son will show growing up 😁

I simply adore the design of the Rito and rito village (much like I adore most things about Breath of the Wild). Their design is simplistic, yet complicated, proud yet reserved. Rito village is so homely, but also ornate, and with the mix of the music, it's really calming being there.

Waxes philosophical about killing monsters being more like play-acting due to their cute-creepiness, the way they die, and the squeal they make. Immediately after "These little jerk-offs; I hate those things!" at 10:38 LOL Those darn whizzrobes.

I think what really nails the success of the aesthetic is that Adam sounds like a super stoked kid when he's visiting this book. Great video, thank you.

It's great that you talk about the emotion and feeling that goes into artistry. Capturing those emotions is the first part of any artists ultimate goal. The 2nd part, is to have others share those same feelings they worked so hard to capture, much like a fisherman takes pride and joy in sharing their catch. The original Concept for Zelda came from the feeling and desire of being a kid and exploring (specifically the caves and countryside of Japan) and since the start the series has certain achieved that goal. I have very strong memories of most of the Zelda series games due to when they came out, that nostalgia increasing their emotional value beyond any precious gem or bar of gold. Oh and I'm still waiting on your Zelda artwork to help win back your son from Tyler lol.

Exactly the same sentiment here - the nostalgia, warm cozy feeling you'd get playing. Even the earliest top-down pixel version had this explainable comfort feeling playing - but of course, Ocarina of Time was the most impactful one for me.

@@AdamDuffArt I'm a tad surprised you don't fit the meme of "The best Zelda game was the one that came out when I was 12!" I for one fit that meme to a tee with ALTTP for the Snes being my favorite. OOT was darn epic though! Nintendo sticking to a limited sound arrangement even when their hardware could produce more variation is likely why the music remains so memorable. Working within constraints like you have said about limiting color choices, works wonders in the hands of an artist.

The wonder all the world made me feel. And the nostalgic feeling while walking in the plains, or the wonder of seeing a dragon at night. Having the techinque to focus on communicating will be awesome. Thanks for inspiring me! I hope to make a game someday that families can enjoy as you do with your son!

There is something so satisfying about this video, but I cant quite figure it out. Either the way the camera moves around slowly, or how intriguing the art is and how he speaks.

Just playing the game. I can confidently say, after many games that I played in my life, this is one of the bestly designed, both artistically and mechanically, game that I have ever played in my life.

Perfectly said - it's a game that evokes a sense of "comfort" and "coziness" playing - it's the nostalgia and magic of it. I can't wait for BoTW 2 to come out!!!

I bought this book about two months ago so I could take some inspiration from the character designs and gorgeous illustrations, and I don’t regret this purchase one bit. I’ve been a hardcore Zelda fan for almost 20 years, and the whole series has been (and remains) one of the biggest inspirations behind my creative projects.

i actually relate to ur son a lot- i obsessed with this game so much to the point it’s almost the only thing i talk about with my friends, family, or i even make some of my school projects related to botw except it isn’t so obvious- i cried in every cutscene it’s just so😭 (also i kind of commented late but yeah-)

Put this book on my wishlist for my birthday just recently. Man, I love botw. Such a beautiful game and I love the almost classical hero journey in it. It's almost like in Mozart's "Zauberflöte" where the hero needs to go through water and fire and grow as a person along the way to safe the beautiful lady. It just a good simple story that works for kids but is still executed so well that people of any age can enjoy it...though I wish it wasn't just tugged away in cutscenes. I felt so proud when I slayed my first guardian because at the beginning they seem so invincible, it's still not scary so kids can watch me play and run around in the world a little...falling off mountains...😅

I just did a little design project creating weapons for the mysterious race of people that I think will be in the BOTW sequel (based on the teaser trailer and some info from the first game), this book was so inspiring to look at and read. Makes me feel like a kid and get really excited about all of the thought and care that the artists put into their designs, it makes such a difference even if it doesn't necessarily consciously register with the player. First project like this I've ever attempted but I learned so much. I've been listening to a lot of your videos, it's been very eye opening and just what I need in these hard times. I'm a university art student who has been learning a lot more on my own, I still need to get my skills together before I graduate and you've given a lot of great advice I haven't quite heard before. I know I still have so much to learn but your words have made me feel less intimidated by the process. While I'm more in the technical skill building phase right now I appreciate that you've helped me reconnect to the importance of the emotional part of it. Thank you!

Thank you for creating this video. Drawing, painting, and digital artworks are hobbies of mine and this video's helped me out to create something more expressive with character and landscape. All this time, I've been resorting to making things that I find beautiful without realizing that I've been limiting the creativity that lies inside the imagination. It's pretty fun to be abstract and free as well. But yeah, this video's helped me out, not only in terms of visual arts, but in music composition as well.

I don't know what it is, but this video in particular has so many lessons so simply stated. It really shows your experience as an artist and director, and your care for your craft. I had to slow the video down and watch it four times to really grasp some of your wisdom Adam. Thank you for sharing this one.

Im not sure if you missed or simply just failed to mention, but there is a very neat reason behind the design aesthetic regarding Kass, being the fact that that they based his look on that of a parrot where he is a bard. Parrots learn and repeat phrases and words, much like how a bard learns and repeats songs and tales. Pretty ingenious if you ask me!

I really love this video because of what you said about seeing things through the eyes of a child, and being loose with your art. I'm one of those perfectionists when it comes to drawing. If it ain't perfect, it sucks. But seeing this has made me rethink how I approach my art. It doesnt need to be a perfect masterpiece the first try. Just explore.
