'Share the loot with the soldiery' is my favourite rule. Corporate employees often obviously don't care about the business, they 'listen when the leader is watching' as Son Tzu said, because they aren't getting a piece of the victory for themselves. Reward your people well and you will attract more customers and good employees.

Regarding the contrast between your interpretations of "put yourself in chaotic situations" and "show up prepared", I would say that these two concepts are two sides of the same coin in that a good strategist prepares for any eventuality and conserves their energy and resources to deal with chaotic situations as they unfold; dealing with chaos is much easier when you are prepared for uncertainty.

It seems eons, i first read the book from Dad's library before leaving for college life. Not understanding almost anything, I stole (one of his favorite books, and not the one to be let out of sight)the book from him and smuggled it to college, where i read it atleast 20 times. Still NO-GO. 17 years since then I read the Upanishads. It was so simple yet I did not (or could not) see it. What I believe to be the operating principle is desire- Free from desire you see the reality, in desire the veil obscures.

In covering the cost of war one application is economic warfare. A concrete example of this abstract principle is during the korean war chinese soliders were told toward the end of the conflict, not to fight but to surrender to the UN forces. The UN forces in a very short times had over 100,000 chinese P.O.W.'s to feed cloth and house, this expense was to great for the U.N. forces to bear, the chinese forced an armistice through financial warfare, winning without fighting.

An important historical point to mention would be that Sunzi strategies ( real names of the "book") was not written by Sunzi who is an imaginary caractere . The strategies were first written during the 1st century AD of the Han period, and were not as developed as now. Along the centuries that follows the writings appeared with more details and were said to be written during the Zhou period 500 BC by the general Sunzi who is still a legendary figure since there's no historical evidence of his existence.
