The Art Of Making Kajal (Collyrium) | The Traditional Indian Way | Blackest Black
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Hi Guys, this summer my mother taught me how to make Kajal/ Kohl like the old traditional way. It was fascinating to see how it is done!
You will need:
•A bell metal plate ( It is a form of bronze with a higher tin content) also known as Kansa plate with upward edges (Kansa is considered to be the healing metal of Ayurveda)
• Container
•Pure almond oil
•Cotton ( used to light clay Diya)
•Mustard oil (Sarso ka tel )
•Spoon
•Pestle & Mortar (for crushing the almonds)
•Matchstick or Lighter
•Crush 5 almonds using pestle and mortar, Make a cotton pad as shown in the video and put the crushed almonds
•Add 2 spoons of Carom (Ajwain) and close the cotton pad. Fill mustard oil in the clay diya to 1/4th capacity.
•Transfer the cotton roll to the clay diya to immerse in the mustard oil, Once it all soaked in add more oil to the clay diya and light it.
•Use three, pillar-shaped containers to support the bell metal plate on top of the diya.
•The plate should be high enough to not completely put off the diya light and it should be close enough for the diya fire to deposit the black ink. you can see the fire lapping at the Kansa plate making it black.
•Wait until the entire mustard oil is exhausted. The black ash collected is the kajal/kohl. Collect it using a spoon and keep it in a small box.
Take a small amount almond oil and mix it into the collected black powder. Store in a cool place.
•You can use the powder for eyeshadow it will prevent the kajal from smudging. Make sure you keep it in a pan so that it is easy to take the product using a flat brush.

I'm currently working on my graduation project where I'm trying to understand the relationship between beauty and personal grooming. I would love to hear your thoughts on the same! I'd really appreciate it if you'd take five minutes of your time to fill in this quick survey. forms.gle/6yW56iEP4XKK7vLr9 Thank you so much

I was taught by my mom to make it by taking a whole almond, dipping it into ghee(use a needle to hold it), then holding it over a ghee fire (cotton wick) until it is charcoal. Then strain it thru a very fine cloth and use with castor oil. Didn't know there were so many ways to make it! Interesting!

I'm from a poor family, so when I was a teen, I didn't have money to buy make-up. So I used to use coal waste - which is called "gayettes" in my country (Belgium) - I collected on old mines sites, burned them and crush them in olive oil. It was my eyeliner and my mascara during all my teenagehood and my college studies.
I was mesmerized watching! Beautifully entertaining, much admiration, from a Texas grandma! 💞
What a beautiful Art. I will be doing this. Thank you

Home made kajals..r too Good.My grandma...was a specialist...,but used different ingredients...
My mom always make kajal using this method on every diwali using diyas and apply on my eyes since childhood so that it can protect my eyes. After fireworks, mom applied kajal on eyes before sleeping. She used to tell the reason that it will protect our eyes from that light which we saw during fireworks outside and clean our eyes. Nice video.. 😃👍
beautiful video. I guess the art of making and storing kajal varies a little by region in India, but the concept is the same. My grandmoms - dadi and nani - used to make kajal for us with home made ghee, in a clean clay diya and collect the soot in beautiful artistically engraved and ornate brass kajal daanis for application. The whole concept of kajal making is so holistic and artistic.
