The Art of Embodying a Concept: OnlyOneOf’s ‘dOra maar’

With the dora maar choreography video getting ready to hit 1M views any moment now, I think it's the perfect time to discuss why dOra maar is such a good project deserving of those views in the first place!
After writing and posting the choreography analysis in thread form on twitter (@Hyekoo), I finally decided to write a piece about dOra maar in relation to onlyoneof’s artistry as a whole. Surprisingly it became 6 pages too long for another twitter thread so I decided to give it a video format instead. Enjoy!
I might add subtitles of the script some day, but for now I hope the video is clear enough.

*CORRECTIONS/REVISIONS* 1. As a lovely commenter pointed out, the prequel song picassO may actually have been written in dora maars perspective from the get go. And after sitting on that for a while and revisiting some old interviews where onlyoneof talk about picassO and dOra maar telling the same story being told from different perspectives (and that picassO in their words is actually an angry song) im very inclined to believe it, and wished i could've included it in the essay if it wasn't for this oversight. Because of this my original analysis doesn't fully align but I think the main argument holds up, albeit in a different way. The argument being that dOra maar as a song still shatters the idea you originally had about picasso's love and picassO the song. Based on picassO alone there's little basis to believe it is sung from any perspective other than his own, and it seems like a very intense, passionate and even romantic song. However, the moment dora maar got introduced in the story with the release of dOra maar which highlights picasso's slimyness and manipulation, revisiting picassO from her perspective not only makes sense but it also sharply changes the mood of the song. Rather than perfect and romantic it reads more angry, frustrated and sticky.

I was watching ooo's mnet stage for dora maar just now and noticed something interesting that probably ties in with your video- at some point in the chorus, "want to see the 100" is sung. The number 100, in Korean, is "백", and in romanised form, "baek". It's pronounced pretty much the same as the word "back", so based on your comments about Picasso only being able to easily access Dora Maar's back, there might be a play on words there that insinuates something. Maar did once say that Picasso never painted the "true Dora Maar" (something like that I don't recall exactly), so maybe that lyric is implying that Picasso never cared about Maar's authentic self and only wanted the perfect and easy-access part of her? Idk just a random thought if you got this far thanks for reading my rambling :D

Wow...this vid made me go back to revist why I love this song so much and made me notice so many things about the choreography. Like if we talk about cubism, subverting expectations to present reality: in Rie's part after the 1st chorus, he sings his whole part with his back to the camera (like Dora Maar's perspective) which subverts the expectation of a stage performer. And he also kind of moves into a T-pose, like a crucifixion or sacrificial pose? Which also moves into their themes of good/evil along with the fickleness of what "love" can be, knowing that a sacrifice is also considered an act of love.

thank you for this video essay!! i only became a lyOn in february of this year but i have been practically drooling over this song since i heard it and watched performances of it. that first 15 seconds of nine and yoojung in the begin is so excellent, absolutely one of the coolest lyrical/choreography ties i've ever seen in kpop. dOra maar truly is OOO's magnum opus, i really hope we get more stuff like it from them in the future because they are simply too good at pulling it off to only have one song like it

OnlyOneOf are always so committed to their art in their concept, they truly never disappoint with their production and dOra maar is such a beautiful masterpiece! It's a crime that barely anyone outside of the fandom knows about it... I love looking into OnlyOneOf's work and trying to analyze the imagery, the lyrics, choreo etc... dOra maar is my favorite song so watching this analysis was pure joy! Thank you so much for this video, it was very interesting and only further proves how great this whole era's concept was. If I can add on what you said about cubism and the choreo: you said that cubism is showing multiple facettes of an image. When watching the choreo I've always found that there always were a lot of things to look at at the same time (like during the second verse, for example: the members are all doing something different). Do you think it could be considered a representation of cubism? Thank you again for your work, I love what you do! ❤️

First! Thank you for watching and leaving such a lengthy comment. Personally i think to an extent you could interpret it within the context of cubism, though it's not the first thing I would think of or did. (considering that in this specifc verse they don't seem to really be showing 1 thing in different perspectives but are more just trying to create an image that requires them to do different things to create that picture). overall i just think its a stellar sequence of them creating a more theatrical performance and creating more prominent images that reflect the lyrics/mood. For example: Yoojung singing "until the moon goes down" while nine and mill portray a moon cycle that ends in a nonexistent state. Though again, cubism wasn't made for dance, so the specifics of what parts could and what parts couldn't be following a cubist essence is something i struggle with myself, which is why for the sake of the video i kept it at the use of recognizable motifs, cause motifs are easier to recognize and interpret the expectation or subversion thereof of. Though, if i can add a different perspective that's less about how many viewpoints are shown and more abt the shapes itself. considering that ooo like using more geometrical/abstract shapes when representing an image! Thats definetly something i think you could see channeling a type of cubism. Considering the other part of cubism that i didnt really discuss in the video is the deconstruction of an image into basic geometrical shapes, that are then fragmented into the image from various viewpoints. (basically the cube in cubism) Hope that makes sense! I think my brain is a little fried.

Dude...wow...I know you haven't posted in 8 months and may not see this comment, but as a new lyOn I just stumbled across this video and I'm in awe. I didn't realize how in depth and meaningful OOO's songs are. I honestly just thought they had a risque concept to attract attention to their music. I struggle with understanding metaphors and lyrical meanings so I never really thought too much about the songs other than that I like them and they're sexy. I have SUCH a newfound appreciation for OOO, holy shit. This video is absolutely fantastic and I hope it gets more views! OOO is so, so underrated. They deserve way more attention. I have known about them for a while as the group that did *that move* in libidO, but only recently started really getting interested in them. I'm so sorry for writing so much, but I'm just like 🤯

Thank you for your analysis! 💗 I also love dOra maar alot! 🥺💙 I do think so much thought and sensitivity was put into making this song 💙💙💙 I actually think you can view picassO and dOra maar as a conversation: picassO as Dora Maar talking to Picasso and dOra maar as Picasso's reply to Dora Maar... Actually thr song picassO always sounded angry for me! It sounds like Dora Maar being so frustrated with Picasso because she loves him but can also see that he treats her so poorly 😢....for example the very first lyrics " no mercy, i don't know why I just draw whatever you say"...could represent Dora Maar's frustration that Picasso forced her to give up photography to paint instead 😩 (some people believe he did that because he was jealous of how good her photographs were)... The "paint over" lyrics could also be Dora Maar begging Picasso to stop painting the cubist portraits of her (she has said that she has never posed for Picasso and all those portraits are portraits of him not her 😢) Then dOra maar is Picasso's reply which like you said is essentially gaslighting her saying that he's not at fault at all because he's only painting what she chooses to show him 🙄... And the amazing thing is that after you listen to dOra maar, you can listen to picassO all over again as Dora Maar's reaction to Picasso's reply 💔... Playing picassO and dOra maar on loop essentially represents the toxic relationship that they had 💔 I also think the the sharp, distorted sounds of picassO's instrumental complements Picasso's cubist paintings (like if one of his paintings turned into a song it would sound like picassO? 😅) while dOra maar's more subdued instrumentals complement Dora Maar's black and white photographs that are surreal and melancholic .... Ohh wherever Dora Maar is, I do hope she is in peace 💙🥺

Also one more thing! (sorry! the stories behind OOO's songs have just been on my mind a lot 😅) I was thinking maybe the choreo and the blue outfits actually reference Picasso's "Blue Period"? :0...it's arguably the saddest and most traumatic period of his life, but I also think he expressed that pain with a lot of tenderness and empathy in his paintings, which is ironic considering how emotionally abusive he was towards Dora and a lot of people 😫... A part of me actually feels like it was this period that changed Picasso for the worse. As far as I know, his blue period paintings weren't well received or appreciated by critics and that could have led him to have a more jaded/cynical outlook on life? 😔

Actually I would also like to add another thing because I was listening to OOO's other songs again, and it just feels like Dora Maar and Picasso's relationship represent the kind of love that they talk about in a lot of their other songs? :0 Like savanna, sage, angel and asOiaf all feel like they could be talking about their relationship? 🥺 (I especially think angel is very much connected to dOra maar since they included the dOra maar visualiser in the angel mv and they both have similar choreos where they hold back Junji at a certain point!) Then I listened to Off angel again, and if you think of it as Dora Maar singing it to Picasso...it just makes their story even more heartbreaking 🥺...she loved him so much she was willing to give up so much for him, while he selfishly romanticized her pain (just like what he did with his other lovers 😡😩) Oh I really do feel like crying now...🥺 ...but really, would this make sense? :0...or am I overthinking it? 😅

I wanna add some kind of social commentary to this. I love how they decided to portray Doora Maar and Picasso's relationship in this way, especially putting Doora as the main character, giving her voice. There're so many artists that are praised and almost worshiped, that were/are actually pretty gross persons, and the public opinion usually fails to make them accountable and overlook their problematic behavior. Here, OnlyOneOf are not just talking about a toxic relationship; they chose a very specific one to convey some emotions and thoughts that proved to be vindictive, even if not planned. That's so satisfying to see.

Revisiting your analysis once more, I do love your work! I'm not sure why 8D decided to commission an English version of dOra maar, perhaps they felt it would go over better with the American audience on tour?? This song is one of the best loved songs in the OnlyOneOf discography, it's so complex lyrically which is reflected in the choreography, the English version just throws away all that nuance, it's unforgivable really. I can barely watch them perform it (Dora + Explorer, the cartoon nature of this is a "horror", I don't know how they do it with a straight face, I just don't...) If/when they go back on tour, I hope lyOns push to go back to touring with the Korean version of this song, I really do!! Ultra lyOns + light sticks, let's go!

I'm here a million months later, but have you heard and compared the English lyrics version to this one? I took a peek and there seems to be some differences and I was wondering if you'd thought about it. Loved your analysis. I don't see this nearly often enough and it was refreshing!!! Thank you!

First of all, thank you! Regrettably I, like many other lyons, pretend the English version doesn’t exist. it has no relevance to the lore whatsoever as the English lyrics got decided based on a contest separate from their own creative team and the guy (artist name: villain) with the most views simply ended up winning (he had an existing fanbase). It’s a shame cause there were very good submissions from actual fans who considered the story that didn’t end up winning. If I seriously consider villain’s version though, I think where it fails is the lack of self awareness, it narrated Picasso’s terrible behavior and point of view but doesn’t criticize it whatsoever. While the original song did a good job of not romanticizing the toxicity of the relationship while still writing from Picasso’s perspective. dOra maar is a very tasteful commentary on a very unhealthy relationship between 2 real people, but his lyrics seem like he listened to the song once and missed all the nuances that made it so tasteful. Relating their story, and dora specifically, to a children’s tv show particularly irked me cause it made the song feel like a parody. If you wanna spin it to be more poetic though, ironically villain embodied Picasso’s view point, “ruining” a perfectly good thing because of his projection and lack of care while walking away with the money (the contest winner won 100k). So it’s fitting in that way. Sorry for this wall of negative text btw, I do prefer to be positive about this group haha

@@lou2766 oh wow! Thank you for the context! I know the artist you're mentioning and didn't know there was a competition behind it. I think that helps explain some of the differences I was noticing in the translation. I appreciate your time in responding (and strongly encourage you to do more of these)

you put all the thoughts i had about this song when it first came out into words🫶 i loved the analysis of the choreo as someone who doesn't really know much about dissecting dance and connecting it to art. this is amazing!!
