The Art Market: Part 2 - Galleries

Part 2 of 4 in a series I made about the contemporary art market with artsy.net and UBS. Gallerists and art-world influencers provide their insights on how an artist's market is developed and protected. Produced in collaboration with artsy.net and UBS. Edited by Nate DeYoung. The Art Market (in Four Parts) series is owned by Art.sy, Inc. For licensing of these films, please contact legal@artsy.net.
Galleries is the second installment of a four-part documentary series, preceded by Auctions and followed by Patrons and Art Fairs, released weekly through mid-June. Together, the four segments tell a comprehensive story about the art market’s history and cultural influence.

There is one important piece of the puzzle missing here: in the early 1980's Citibank, and what was then Manufacturers Hanover Trust Bank in NYC opened what they called the "Private Banking Division" and, for the first time, banks started to recognize collections of art and accept them as collateral for outstanding loans. Thus art and modern art had all of the sudden become BANKABLE. And with this development, the business of art as we know it today took off. Next thing you know, individuals, hedge funds and banks themselves are investing in art portfolios. Which is why USB is paying money to Oscar for creating this rather well-produced youtube clip.

Money is one theme. Social affirmation is another. Remember at 0:50 where the dealer won't sell you a picture but will sell it to a collector who has social ties and connections. Art speculation is similar to market speculation I guess which is connected to how people value and devalue something. It's not just about money it's about how and why art is worth as much or as little as it is. Van Gogh shouldn't have died broke and hungry.
