    if they stick to sourcing local materials, and keeping supply lines short, I think they can. Many companies problems are coming from their supply lines, the small plants will keep costs low, and so long as they make a reliable product, their purpose build EV should be able to compete with a converted transit, just because of the benefits with turning radius and interior capacity.

    My biggest issue with the arrival van is all the electronics in one tablet. I feel that there should be a digital panel flush with the central console for controlling the van, an option for drivers to use knobs to adjust the climate and a simple set of analog speedometer/instrument cluster directly behind the steering wheel. Now don't get me wrong, I like minimalism, but when it is not intuitive, the design fails. Also, I hope the Arrival van uses less cobalt in the battery (or solid state batteries), cos cobalt is mined from the Congo via harsh labor.

  • @godzillas6301

    @godzillas6301

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think you hit it on the head . You assemble on a line to reduce space needed and collate everything you need into an area . The same volume of space is needed regardless of its location or rather histroy says more space is needed if its from a ground upwards build . Building on a pod idea will work however chain supply issues ( the irony ) will mean massive logistical issues to get the parts needed to create the vehicle . Also and its bloody obvious when you say it but a robot that needs to multi task is asking for software issues . On a line a robot has a single task as this therefore has built in reliability . You also dont need millions of quids worth of robot doing a demeaning job like dropping in 4 screws so theres a massive cost implication there as a vastly overcomplicated and expensive machines time is taken up with a task that something lesser would be appropriate . Quality control defines a business . With the business scattered and therefore qc impossible to be easily uniformed then good luck with this as a business model .

  • @jorsm.3893

    @jorsm.3893

    @@godzillas6301 But having everything in one location is by no means a guarantee for quality either. Quality issues like panel gaps (or paint deficiencies) in Teslas are something you could easily automatically detect with cameras, no human inspection needed. Any quality control you would automate would be much more consistent as well, regardless of whether you produce in 1 or in 10 locations. The supply chain issue is indeed the biggest issue. They are betting on fully recyclable materials (but of course that is mostly for the paneling). Since materials are easier to transport than finished producs, I think the concept has a change, but time will tell.

    @@jorsm.3893 Not feeling it that way at all . Uniformity is what is needed to be assured of quality of product . However if there is multiples of different machine being used to create the same product this allows for more to go wrong noticed or otherwise . That enables quality control issues and the ability for a good quality product to become varied off the back of failures of machinery and the nuances of what could possibly go wrong . Remember they are talking about a single machine doing full assembly here . There isnt a secondry machine to double check given the first machine would be assumed to have done the job correctly in the first instance and this isnt about checking a panel gap , its about the entire assembly of a vehicle of which a failure within something deep within the assembled vehicle could create chaos and be a real trial to rectify . If the same machine is used day in day out , made exclusively and used for that single job then there beyond a higher chance that it will proform better and be more reliable in what it generates than something that requires many thousand folds worth of info to try to do its job within what would then be a billion parameters . That is asking for trouble ...... theres a very valid reason the world not full of small car production lines .

    @@jorsm.3893 Tesla's quality issues are not about them not being capable of better quality. Their leadership just don't care about the factory churning out bad quality. So they don't tell the factory making better quality. Instead the orders are "maximize production numbers". Even if that means putting out cars with shoddy unrepaired paint (which frankly someone at factory noticed, but nothing was done about it since production numbers is key, just push it out to customer and see whether they accept it). Slap the panels on place, oh it's uneven, no time to fix it, next one coming down the line already, put it out to customer. It is all about what is to the leadership is acceptable quality to put out to customer and when goes the red light go on and the item is held back as reject and not fit to be presented to the customer. Again automatic QC camera noticing bad panel gaps or paint would mean nothing, if on getting that alert the QC team just goes "can't hold it back, holding it back would mean not meeting this weeks production target, just send car out to customer". They aren't incomptent, they are doing it intentionally. Would they make better quality, if they could get same numbers out? Sure it doesn't hurt to have better quality, but that is secondary to the production numbers. Since having better quality would mean potentially halting the production line to calibrate production machinery, fix this or that jig, retrain crew, upload new software to robots, adjust this or that process and so on. Plus of course holding the rejects back. Reject hold back is one car not to be tallied in production numbers for the week. Where as if you put it out, it is number on production/sales tab and well "we fix it later on field service, maybe, when we get to it. eventually or compensate the owner with new car from later production and then take the car back to be reworked... on the long slow rework queue. Since rework and field service queue doesn't show up in the financial numbers headlines, unlike factory quarterly production numbers." Its all about the business.

    @@godzillas6301 "theres a very valid reason the world not full of small car production lines", because a group of people succesfully tried that model, it worked well/was profitable, and so everyone replicated it because they know it works. It doesn't mean that something else couldn't work, and there is nothing wrong with trying another approach, even if it fails people will learn a lot more from this experiment than from similar businesses following the traditional practices. There is many ways to look at it. I am aware that a machine that does 100 different jobs will probably be a lot more complicated and have more potential points of failure than a machine that only does one job, but I do believe that technology has evolved enough that things like this could be done reliably. Also their vehicles have been designed from the ground up to match this method of manufacturing. Finally there is significant difference in the impact of a single failure. With the concept arrival would try, if one assembly unit fails, that would hardly threaten the revenue of the company (compared to stopping a huge assembly line). In fact engineers could probably take their sweet time to resolve any quality issues before starting that production cell up again. Only time will tell if it could work. You might be right, you might be wrong, at least it's innovating/interesting to follow.

  • @grahammonk8013

    @grahammonk8013

    "I know Tesla have tried and failed" Bit early to say that. They're late, certainly. The Semi, Roadster, and the Cybertruck all need the 4680 to be viable, and it's taken longer than expected, (well, longer than Elon expected) to get that running. The 4680 exists, but production rate was not good enough, but it seems they have got the major problem sorted. Austin is reported to be on the verge of producing Model Y with them. The Semi won't be in mass production until that ramps up. Pepsi was to get a dozen of them last month, which didn't happen, though the Megachargers are being installed now. I don't know if Arrival has plans for a class 8 truck, they have car and bus prototypes, but I have the feeling their technology is not suited to that market. The way I see it, Tesla is the only likely manufacturer of big trucks, mostly because of the required volume of batteries. That means that even sourcing raw materials is problematic, and Tesla has been the only one who seems to be making moves upstream in the raw materials supply chain. The other possibility is BYD, they're already building a fair number of buses.
