The Army Men Series: Is it bad or just misunderstood?

Ойындар

4 years ago from today I first fashioned the idea to create this video. It's been 4 long and very awkward years and I'm really at a loss of words. I never imagined I could actually get this thing done. However, I did manage to whip up an essay of sorts that explains what the fuck took so long. Here it is: moreuselessknowledge.blogspot....

I was one of the Artists who worked on the Isometric Shooters ArmymenI, II, World war, and Toys In Space, before transitioning to console games, with Armymen Green Rogue. If you are curious about the details of the working conditions, I can give details, but i was paid well, but the deadlines were harsh. Parmanent crunch time as soon as I was in Console development.

Army Men RTS my favourite Army Men game. I just loved it and I still love it. Especially the characters, I will never forget them. Everytime I return to that game, I find something amazing I did not understand when I was kid (basically everything because I couldn't speak enlish back then) and all the references.

In the 70's, a lot of the companies known for Army Men like Louis Marx went out of business. Tim Mee and BMC came back eventually but after the 70's, Army Men became more of a generic toy made by no-name companies

  • @andrewstickley6681

    @andrewstickley6681

@@retroroy8720That was more due to the oil crisis than the Vietnam war. Obviously oil is needed to make plastic, so skyrocketing prices made it uneconomical to make plastic toys. Marx made a ton of other plastic toys as well. US Toy companies really started hurting in the very late 80s-90s when Chinese imports became common. The Chinese companies could just copy and then undersell anything made in the US. Even then, the Chinese ones I had as a kid (born 1999) were of pretty decent quality and came with full sized tanks, etc. By the time I was outgrowing them, all you could find were crappy bags of mutated troops at the dollar store. I tried to find some for a young family member a few months ago, went to 5 different stores looking for cheap troops and couldn’t even find a single bag.

The first Army Men game for windows 98/95 was my all time favourite childhood game to play, I have NEVER played a game as much and had fun losing as I have as that game. I spent 3 years on that game, after the 3 years I moved house, got a PC of my own, forgot about the game until I saw the 'Warchest'. It was the most influential game to me in my life. I miss the game. I also appreciate the extent of detail you have went into making this video. As a 6-7 year old boy, I managed to get through all the way to the third chapter of the game, I played the game again several years later, probably about a decade, and I could not even reach the half way point in the second chapter without extreme difficulty. Don't even get me started on the bank robbery mission. The amount of hours spent on that mission alone, memorising each tank route and where each tank would come from, ensuring you take out specific gates so tanks can't get past but not taking out vital ones so you can't get away... Fuck they don't make 'em like they used to...

I would personally say Army Men RTS is the Newbie's Primer to Command & Conquer. I remember playing through it and thinking it felt a lot like C&C Generals simplified in a somewhat more family friendly setting (toys fighting over a house vs. the War on Terror) that would basically lay a solid groundwork for the core "how RTS works"

There was a spin-off of the Army Men series that was released in the early PS2 era called Portal Runner. Which had General Grimm’s daughter Vicki as the main protagonist and was set shortly after the events of Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes 2. Counting that game, would probably make 43 in the franchise as a whole.

I was about 6 or 7 years old when I watched my teenage brother play bits and pieces of Army Men and Army Men II. Fast forward to age 10 and I finally get to play them for myself. I had loved video games before that point but those two were the things that propelled and solidified gaming as one of if not my favorite activity. I enjoyed them so much I went on a mission to find every game in the series I could. Fast forward to my current age of 19. Including multiple ports in some cases, I now own close to 25 games in the series. The Army Men franchise is the only game series that's been with me from my childhood to my adulthood. I'm not done finishing the series yet, only a couple left (I saved some of the cruddier ones for last unfortunately, Soldiers of Misfortune was... even worse than I ever thought possible.) Some of the games are genuinely good. And some feel so rushed I can barely believe they were released. The World War games in particular, there was solid game design through the sub-series that was constantly marred by one of the worst game engines I've ever seen. I still own them all. I enjoy them for the most part. Maybe I obsessed too much at the time, I probably still do. But Army Men made a lasting impact on my life and childhood in a way I'm finding it hard to describe. It even partially shaped my music tastes; mainly talking about the classical arrangements in Army Men II. As a kid I acted out my own adventures with my own plastic army men taking the roles of the game characters and created stories with the world 3DO created - based on basically the same thing I was doing that very moment: playing with those brave plastic grunts. In the end, Army Men is just as you put it... misunderstood. There are some very poorly made games in the series. A lot of them even. A good number of solid quality and just stupid fun games too. For PC, console and handheld, everyone has a chance to play at least one fun Army Men. But not everyone wants to. Thank you so much for creating this video.

Between 1999 in May till 2002 in December. It had 20 good competitive players, and a solid playerbase of 100 people on peak weekends. I tried World War, but the army men community wasn't really feeling it. Just 2 tournaments were organized for it where am2 had about 4 tournaments per month. Toys in Space was a complete hatefest for the community but it had some players which liked it. But most of the galactic and alien units were banned in normal play. And then everything died after 3D0 went bankrupt. I was born in 1995, but I started video games at the age of 3 :D Even being from Europe with the worse of the worse internet providers and quality, I could play 2 matches in a whole week. I remember all the hours I got out of the original Army Men for PC. Also I often compare the World War series on the PS1 with Call of Duty, just older/cheaper. Had everything that Call of Duty actually had, action packed battles, lots of soldiers, vehicle sections, and often a sense of not being the lone wolf on some missions. Sure they were cheap games, but they were also affordable as a kid so, I can often let the cheap aspect fly a bit. You paid for what you got.

In my eyes, Army Men was for those who wanted to have the war 'experience' but not be as 'gritty' or 'serious' as the real thing. Seriously, those little plastic men were the ultimate 'portal' to go from the real world to the 'plastic world', and go into the war between the nefarious Tan Republic and the Green nation. General Plastro was evil, yes... but he was also comedic and funny, he was the cartoon villain that had evil plans but didn't implement them properly. In the Sarges Heroes game, he very nearly came close to achieving total dominance, if it weren't for losing the portals and Sarge's efforts. He turned soldiers into 'spiders', he unleashed 'death rays' upon POW's (magnifying glasses), he used 'super weapons' to rain death and destruction (robots armed with machine guns and flamethrowers), and fortified his main base with an insurmountable wall of energy (bug zappers). When he was using his super weapons his army was advancing on 'all fronts'. The Green Nation was outnumbered 50-1, they weren't winning the war but they weren't losing, especially while General Plastro was involved. Only when he vanished from the scene, and Field Marshal Tannenberg took over, did they start to lose. Green was about to end the war with a peace signing after capturing Tannenberg. But once Plastro came back, with 'new' weapons of destruction... the tide turned once again. Plus if you take on the settings of the war, think about it, a simple thing like a 'firecracker' for us, for a plastic soldier like Sarge, was probably the equivalent of a nuke. It was all the horrors of war but in the comedic form for a child to comprehend and not feel scarred.

Army Men II was actually my first proper PC game that I ever played, and I fell in love with it. Damn it felt good using rocks as cover and swarming the enemy with my 50 riflemen lol. Hell I even reinstalled Army Men II and World War today, trying to figure out how to remove the 20 unit limit, too bad I couldn't get Toys in Space tho. I'm also thinking of bringing back a few things from World War to II if I'm able to mod it properly but I'm not so sure I'll be able to, like the Machine Gunners and Turrets. Here's the link which helped me get both of these games run without a hitch: www.gog.com/forum/army_men_series/how_to_play_army_men_2_multiplayer_without_gog_ver_and_no_lags Now all I need is a way on how to run the game in a 1366x786 resolution lol. And Army Men III is dead sadly, check the homepage, the dev lost motivation and guys, however Army Men Online is probably still a thing that may or may not come out in 2018/2019.

Can I ask why you hate TIS? I personally like it (and I'll have to disagree with you hating Sarge's Heroes simply due to childhood bias), but the reason I ask is - it really doesn't do anything inherently BAD, or different from II or World War. I LOVE the Army Men series. Air Assault, Army Men 3D, Sarges Heroes, and World War. I wish they'd release a new one, just not as a CoD/Gears of War/ Halo clone.

I would say Army Men: Air Attack 2 could have joined your list. It takes everything that made the first game fun, adds some light touches of strategy to it, and adds much more production value in the form of an actual story, improved music and cut-scenes and a longer single player.

By all means, if that ever happens I’ll be extremely excited to see it. Army Men shaped a lot of my interests in gaming as well as even music. There are tons of game series I love that I’d call undeniably objectively superior, but I love Army Men about as much as any series, warts and occasional disasters in all. Thanks again for creating this back in 2012, the cult fans are still alive sir.

ContraWolf, I agree with you in terms of most Army Men games have been rushed and under developed which in my opinion, are shit and you made a valid point in terms of your favourite Army Men games from the game development and your point of view which is fair enough. About 13 years ago surprisingly, I used enjoy playing Army Men Sarge's Heroes 2 on the PS2 version because I believe that the development of the game was good and the story to me was exciting as before, I was one of the original C&C Red Alert series fan. Nowadays, I watch a few Army Men gameplays as I personally enjoy; Sarge's Heroes 2, Portal Runner & Sarge War because of the exciting storylines and animations after watching a few videos based on the Army Men History Evolution and, I've noticed that the older games seemed to be better than the newer Army Men games with both; the storylines & the gameplay including, more good characters. Army Men 3 especially, has been a complete joke for a game as the gameplay is alright but the cutscenes are atrocious. I might watch the walkthrough of Army Men RTS. I get what I'm saying is long-winded but I hope you can understand my point.

Honestly looking back, I'd say that yes it had a lot of bad games and a lot of them either were horribly set up/disappointing (the PS World War games come to mind), others were fucking fun as all hell (Sarge's Heroes 1/2 and Air Attack 1/2). And if nothing else, the music was top notch. I mean it's definitely not 'high brow'. That said, I do think the model of 'make a crapton of them' is in part one of the biggest problems. Take the three World War games - each one is ultimately the same with some tweaks like a few different items, and there wasn't much plot (faceless protagonist and only the loosest story). Now imagine if the effort for all three was put into a singular 'Army Men: World War'; I think that may have done a lot. Plus, even given the constraints there are good games. The afore mentioned Sarge's Heroes and Air Attack games (which I liked in that they were tied together in a single 'continuity') in particular were ones I remembered fondly. I mean they may not have been the most innovative or top tier games, but I think they were fun in great part just because it was taking those plastic army men and let you play with them differently, yet held back from full potential by rushing out tons and tons of the games. As for after 3DO... Sarge's War. Not saying a thing about gameplay because I have only seen Let's Plays and thus can't judge... no I'll condemn that one on going full grimdark like it's 40K or something with basically no transition to aid the shift, just YOINK! Kill off one of the bigger selling points of the Sarge's Heroes line of games for the sake of being gritty and pretty much no story other wise. I mean the games never had complex stories, but they at least had something to ease you between levels in most cases, or at least some sense of continuity. (IE in Air Attack 2 after going on the run you spend a few missions getting the tools to take out the last factory, but afterwards a lot of the squadron got captured - presumably in the aftermath of the last mission since you weren't running with the usual Green Army support, and that leads to Blade rescuing them with a little help from Sarge and then helping Sarge steal the Tan's latest helicopter and afterwards you're back to the front to turn the tide). Sarge's War... was basically a long series of 'blow this up', some of which didn't make sense (Why does Sarge need to be so worried about those artillery pieces if he's only one guy on a rampage - he's too close for that arty to do anything to hinder him). I mean there is the overarching 'he gets closer to Malice', but even the World War games were better about a sense of progression with for the most part each mission leading to the next logically or were close enough that the jump feels more like 'okay here's the next step in our battle plan on this front'. Or were different fronts entirely, such as Land Sea Air going from stopping a supply train to an air base (but in those cases each operation was self contained as a mini-story and each mission led to the next). But that's my 2 cents.

Hello, Blindzeopowerkick, very interesting video. I am trying to learn the entire Army Men series, but I am always getting confused. There are tons of different main games, each game is different depending on the console/system it was released, and the names of the games confuse more. The same game is called differently in America and in PAL systems. I was wondering,,, Is the PC version of RTS the same as the PS2? Also, how is Sarge's Heroes on PC? Is it similar to the PS1 or N64 version?

its TRUE that World War on the PS1 had shit graphics--but the story was unreal. The teaming up with the blue army to push back the tan was very cool to see. I always wanted to see the Green army team up with the Blues or Gray on a big scale and never really got it until that game.

It would be great if someone would pick up the franchise and make it over again. With today's technology it would be neat if they went back to their roots and used the plot material, but made it more stable. It's sad that given to another developer games like Army Men RTS were kind of enjoyable.

I just bought the War Chest about a week or two weeks ago! Been playing on an old offline only Windows Xp I grew up with the console releases. And I honestly wish I had played the PC versions instead. The PC versions of Army Men 1 and World War are where it's at. I'm playing Army Men 2 now and so far it's my favorite. In my childhood three game series stick out for me. Number 1 Resident Evil been with it since day one a shame it has degraded over time with recent releases. Number 2 Legacy of Kain this is series you don't play for the gameplay...you play for the incredible story telling. And finally Number 3 Army Men I enjoyed some of these games as a kid and a few even as an adult.

I agree, Army men are one of my favourite game series. I want the 3DO console. I used to have a computer from 1993, but my dad threw it away in 2001 when I was 12 and he ever threw all the floppy disks too. I collect army men games and I play the games often. I am trying to finish Army men Sarge's Heroes on hard withough cheats and it's hard.

Many will raise an eyebrow at the idea of a console RTS, but there are a few examples where it has been done well. Goblin Commander is a little-known Xbox/GC/PS2 with a very smart control scheme. Looks like Pandemic pulled it off with this Army Men RTS too.
