The Arctic Monkeys Are Garbage Now - A Video Essay

Ойын-сауық

INTRO -
Ok So. Thesis Statement. In 2006, The Arctic Monkeys came out with their debut album Whatever People Say I am, That's What I'm Not. It was met with incredible acclaim and praise from critics and audiences alike and holds up today as in my opinion one of the greatest and most consistent rock albums of all time, however in the 16 years since this album's release, much like a drug addict, the band has continued to chase, yet never managed to quite attain the same level of quality as these early highs. Now, this is a very simplified version of what you're about to watch, so without further ado, let's get some analysis done on these rock and rollers.
So Sheffield-based rock band Arctic Monkeys have recently come out with The Car, an album that I would normally have released a review of on this channel, and believe me we will get to that, however, I believe in a case like this, it's more sensical to cover the band's history chronologically, because when it comes to this group I have a lot to talk about, and I'd like to make my opinions clear.
For some context the band came together in Sheffield 20 years ago in 2002, starring frontman Alex Turner, who's gonna be mentioned a lot today, as well as drummer Matt Helders and bassist Andy Nicholson, who got sick of touring and was later replaced with Nick O'Malley in 2006, right after the release of their debut album. There was also lead guitarist Jamie Cook, another founding member. And these four to this day are the band's lineup. Now this is only important for their sound because it needs to be emphasized how tight the band was originally, having met at the supple age of merely 7 years old, and it's a tightness that is ever so present in their debut album, so let's talk music now.

Don’t know why this was recommended to me but I wildly disagree. I enjoy all of their music, the early stuff will make me go wild on their concert, while their latest two albums are a great home listen, as well as good to take a breath in-between their faster stuff. And AM is arguably my favourite of their albums that resonates with me a lot, both lyrically and in terms of its mood. It’s an “AM” album - it’s about late night walks back home from the pub, phone calls and messages to random Ex-es and crushes at 3 in the night and thoughts about your feelings of love that tear you apart from the inside as you don’t know if they are reciprocal. There is no better album for a lonely stroll on a dark and moody night. It’s THE album, one that goes beyond just being great music a represents a certain feeling with pinpoint accuracy, and its observational lyrics can only be boring if what is being sung about is not relatable at all. The specific lyric that you mentioned from Do I Wanna Know describes a moment and a feeling I’ve been through so many times now I can’t even say how many, and no one has ever described it in a song lyric as good as Alex did. Having said all that - well, I agree it can easily just not be for you. Especially not for the hardcore early Arctic Monkeys fan. And that’s ok, but it is definitely not because it’s bad or boring.

That's not what he's saying, it's fine you like it but the thing is as the Arctic Monkeys "evolve" they have become less creative. The Car really isn't that experimental it's just different. Different for being differents sake. Other bands have come and changed up their sound completly and really truly thrown themselves in the deep end like Radiohead with "Kid A" but as I said "The Car" doesn't really do that. It's got no flavour or punch. And I dont mean that as in it's not rock no that's fine but compared to over baroque pop acts this isn't very good. I will say I think "There'd better be a mirrorball" is a fantastic song but that's the thing as one song on an album not the sound of an entire album.

I think the general video can be summed up by a quote of his. 27:38 “it sounds grand… genuinely beautiful…. But I don’t like it” I would understand why some people would prefer the original record, it’s a bloody great record, no bad songs. However, if Arctic Monkeys released the same album 6 times, there’d be even more videos saying how shit they are as they have no sense of musical nuance. Furthermore, there are a heap of comments detailing Turners supposed lack of lyrical ability, where, I believe, you are taking his lyrics at face value, which is a blaring mistake when analysing any form of media, especially lyrics which are glorified poem. Overall, the desire for rawness in a band, it has no real nuance, like what you want, but bands, especially AM, signed to a hands off indie label, will (if successful) make more money as they release new music, allowing them a bigger budget to produce the songs that they want to write and progress as they age. It would be so much sadder to see a 35 year old Alex write a song lusting over a girl in a nightclub, compared to his epic and grandiose tale of cheating in Body Paint.

One of the main reasons I love Arctic Monkeys is how they evolved their sound with every album. Sure Whatever People Say I Am is fantastic but what good is a band if they don't take any risks with music? Just because their sound changes or isn't what it was in the beginning, doesn't make it bad. They're one of the few artists that constantly evolve and I'm here for it. You have to respect them for doing what they do.

How can you expect them to not evolve? People change, minds change, inspiration changes, song-writing processes change. There's something about Alex; you may not understand his songs at first, but they grow on you, the more you listen to it, the more you hear. Heck, I love that. I feel their recent albums are more of an acquired taste, rather than an instant hit. (Except, of course, masterpieces like There'd better be a mirrorball, that's just art). I have very different but similar opinions on this lovely band. I do really like WPSIATWIN and favorite worst nightmare (Though I love the lyrics and songs like The Only Ones Who Know and Do Me A Favor and I overall listen to FWN more) I LOVE Humbug I love the lyrics and the storytelling to me is really interesting (except the go cart and it’s one line in a whole album) I love the heaviness of it and I really like the way Alexs sings. I think AM is fine (I LOVE No 1 party anthem and snap out of it and Arabella are pretty good tho.) I LOVE tranquility It’s so interesting and gets better with every listen. (Maybe I can agree that Alex’s voice is not the best but to me it fits with the story of a lonely pianist in space) And The Car to me is tranquility but without the interesting story or sound. They sound good a there are some interesting like big ideas, sculptures and body paint but other than that I’m indifferent to the rest. I did not mean to write this much but what I wanted to say is that this is such a great video production wise that even when I really didn’t agree it was still a fun time. I can’t believe this doesn’t have more views. A really great video even though I disagree 🫶

While I can respect it's your opinion, I don't agree with anything you said in this entire video. Firstly, Alex has objectively improved as a singer since the first two albums. It stylistically might not be your cup of tea, but it is objectively better. Secondly, you kept hammering home your belief that they left the Rock genre starting with Humbug, this isn't true either Humbug, Suck it and See, and AM are all Rock just not garage rock like the first couple. Thirdly, AM has the same themes throughout it as the first album, just instead of it being from the perspective and experiences of a 19 year old kid it's from the perspective and experiences of a man in his mid 20s. I could keep going, but I don't think one single KZread comment is the proper place to lay out an entire rebuttal, lol

I never listened to Arctic Monkeys outside of hearing "Do I Wanna Know" in passing. One day Spotify played a track from TBHC and I was hooked and bought the CD (considering buying the LP). I loved The Car too. I decided to listen to their other stuff and it didn't grab me at first, but I dug it. I kept listening and listening to their older work and eventually it really grew on me and I'll likely buy one of their early albums. I love that this band can really throw down on guitars, bass, and drums but can totally switch to piano, synth, strings, etc. Main takeaway, they clearly did SOMETHING right to get a new fan.

I've heard all these takes before. You don't like Alex's singing post FWN. You think his lyrics got worse, which I'd disagree with. Sure they are not as viciously rythimically delivered as on their debut but, submarine, sias, and yes AM (even if it's really poppy- I agree it's not very good imo) R u mine (is the same as do I wanna know and boring? LOL crazy), Do I wanna know (overrated i agree), love is a laserquest, stuck on a puzzle, its hard to get around the wind, shes thunderstorms. There is some really great song writing in there, and I like Alex's change in vocal style. I agree their debut is by far there best but all of their albums have good song's and the only album I personally dislike is am. Also all these critiques go right out the door for tbhc and the car. The commercial appeal and simplicty that the band adapted for am and sias, which I feel they did rather tastefully is replaced by super complex songwriting. TBHC has some of alex's best songwriting, and I find it to be rather objective. And as soon as he does some experimental songwriting anf structure its "awkward and clumsy and he cant sing right" TBHC Is so imaginative and specific, the album builds a world that the listener builds in their head. I understand people not liking it but to argue it doesnt have merit, especially on alex's part is fucking insane. the car is better than AM ur insane lmao. calling the band garbage is just crazy to me. jokes on you for making a 30 minute video just to call a band garbage.

    1. You did Favourite Worst Nightmare so dirty, there’s literally not 1 bad track on that album (including The Bad Thing) and Alex sounds great (I do agree I would like some raw vocals, but the effects used on his voice in this album mesh really well with the guitar effects) 2. Humbug has some of Alex greatest lyrics that you conveniently downplayed! In Dance Little Liar, Secret Door, Cornerstone you can really see how imaginative Alex Turner’s mind is (not to mention arctic monkeys best song ever is on Humbug, Crying Lightning) 3. AM is a poppy version of Arctic Monkeys that we all needed. How can you deny the catchiness of this album which made it as successful as it is? 4. I saw them live a few months ago, I think they recognise their 2 latest albums are missing the energy needed for a live show, they only performed 1 track from TBHC and 3 from The Car. You might think they’re boring now but believe me when I say it took 5 days after the show for my adrenaline to begin simmering down. The energy live is indescribable. (Fun fact: the best part of the show is their performance of Body Paint from The Car)

i get what you’re saying how they have changed from their rock and roll roots but i feel like every change that they incorporated into their sound worked. alex turner couldn’t keep going with the themes of whatever people say i am because he was growing as a person and not just a musician. he couldn’t keep writing about nightlife past mid 20’s maybe it just gets boring and repetitive which is why i’ve grown out of that album. it’s still really good and i love tracks like a certain romance and vampires but it gets repetitive. moving to fwn and then humbug was a really good transition, favorite worst nightmare was darker than whatever people say then humbug brought it more down and into a experimental phase that queens of the stone age inspired. suck it and see is my favorite because the change they brought didn’t really work it seemed too americanized to me and they had really lost the rock and roll sound while still being rock music it just didn’t work. AM id also one of my least favorites as its popularity has driven me away and the more anthemized sound i never liked. arabella i love probably coming from my love of war pigs by black sabbath since the drums are essentially the same. they had lost so much of their original sound though with that album that tranquility base was a phenomenal album to me it changed their sound completely but also continued off of alex turners side piece the last shadow puppets. the bowie operatic sound i really enjoyed and was a 180 sonically to their music. the lyricism i absolutely loved the psychedelic aspect to it was really well done in my opinion. the car, while i love some songs on there, sculptures, body paint, mirrorball, just seems like a toned down, less experimental form of tranquility base. i know this is a lot but i love this band so much and i really disagree with your point of them “falling off” or losing their greatness

I on the other hand have a completely different(and unpopular) opinion about their albums, I don't really like their early work that much except for a couple songs on each album, but after am i just instantly loved everything they did, specially tbhc, their instrumental work and alex's voice evolved a lot here,+the piano addition just gave them a fresh air on every song,in my thoughts tbhc is the album of the decade, but very underappreciated because of the sudden change from high tempo heavy guitars to slow and more diverse songs, where all the instruments blend making a great sound,i think this change could be less "forced" with louder guitars on songs like four out of five, american sports, star treatment and batphone, this would make them get less hate from the early fans while maintaining the originality of the album, the same could be done on the car,i was expecting actually a blend between their early work and the new one,but didn't happen, still loved body paint, hello you,big ideas and i ain't quite where i think i am

they’re just older now.. alex isn’t gonna have the same energy and same voice as he did years ago.. i thought this was a pretty obvious thing. another thing to note, arctic monkeys tend to take on a different “theme” with every album dropped so yeahh ofc it’s going to change up plenty of times. but that’s why so many fans come back to them, it’s because they have something for everyone. i feel like a lot of fans of the am album, for instance, tend to be adolescents (younger people who enjoy indie/pop/ alternative) because it’s a very sexy smooth album and it is geared to a mainstream audience. nothing is wrong with that, it’s just what they were obviously going for. then they changed it up with these last two, i think now they are doing what they like. no one has to like it, but the ones who do, do. that’s it. it’s simple. they aren’t garbage, you just simply don’t like it and that’s okay. i don’t like a lot of music artists lol wouldn’t necessarily call them garbage.. although i guess it’s whatever. at the end of the day people are gonna do and say whatever they like.

  • @Dankyjabo

    @Dankyjabo

Cheers for the comment! So here's the deal.. The way KZread detects copyrighted music is through waveforms, meaning if somebody is talking over it or there's some other noise somewhat obstructing it, KZread won't be able to detect it. You can use pure unfiltered copyrighted music for effect at points, but you need to be careful because if it's too long of a snippet you'll get claimed, and then no money for you. For video footage, you'll notice at certain points in this video I placed a bunch of overlays on top of the copyrighted footage, such as I bet you look good on the dancefloor, so that once again KZread can't detect the footage being used. I always upload the video on private first and see if KZread detects anything, it'll tell you what footage/sounds it's found, and at what timestamp. Then I'll go back through premiere pro and adjust sound levels or overlay intensity at those points to ensure I can monetise before uploading officially. Doing all this does indeed allow me to monetise my videos. I hope this helps :))

The thing is it would be perfectly acceptable under fair use as I'm using the content in a transformative way but it's more about beating the Content ID robot isn't it - the Content ID system can't determine fair use and it's not worth getting into that process as it's such a pain in the arse! And the same with you - you're totally transforming the original videos in an educational/critical way so you'd be legally covered in fair use but, again, just about throwing that Content ID automatic system off the scent to avoid unnecessary hassle!

I think it’s ironic that your main complaint for AM is that every songs is alike, but also you’d want for them to have stayed in their original 1st album sound, ultimately meaning that every album would have been the same. Also, I think AM definitely has “catchy hooks” most than other albums even. You say that is just commercial music but I think is was just another step of their evolution. Then you state that you were glad they tried something new for TBHC even though they have done that with basically every album, kinda contradictory. So I thought you were going to give actually compelling arguments but instead this basically is “I don’t like it”. PD Also “I see Do the Bad Thing as the beginning of the end for this band” brother, we’re barely on the 2nd album.

I know that it's click bait but still considering that you actually like some of their music I think it's too much called called them "garbage" or "biggest fall". I think you've missed the fact to understand Arctic Monkeys you need to included TLSP, since then you can see how the ship has shifted and what was the direction that Alex was going. Idk if it's because the pandemic or the influence of French music or Alex search of perfection but most of the songs of the Car feel overthought; Body Paint for example, in the begining it's trying to be this heart breaking song with some philosophy stuff but then when it truly breaks and leaves all those things it's the perfection and its peak (and sadly the peak of the album too). I went to AM concert this year and Body Paint and Mirrorball sounded amazing, even better than the album version because it was just them; they didn't need that search of perfection, they were doing the things they know. I think the reason why they're still together is just friendship, and the rest of the band get a long so well with Alex because they're also comfortable or too lazy to argue wtih the direction he wants to take. One thing it's for sure that they won't be back with sound of the first album (they even don't play more than 1-2 songs in the gigs) but I really hope that they just follow their nuts in the next album. I'm sorry if this was too much XD

I completely disagree. I think Arctic Monkeys are on a creative high. If you look at classic artists like Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Kinks, Roxy Music, Bowie, etc. They all had different periods with peaks and valleys, most of them achieving their greatest work later in their career. AM ushered in a new era for this band, and has shown to be their biggest success to this date. Tranquility base is a spacey, atmospheric, conceptual piece that showed brave experimentation. The car continued this move into a more orchestral direction that is truly beautiful and when you consider where they came from, super daring and ballsy. Artists evolve and mature. These guys are not 16 year old punks anymore. These guys are approaching middle age and have different tastes, goals, values, and priorities in their art and personal lives. Being that Turner is their main song writer, he has clearly been on a sweeping personal journey the past 10 years or so. I love the work they are putting out now.

I have to say that I agree their debut is their best and none of their future albums would really match the same level of enjoyment as their first but I do fairly enjoy the most of them (weirdly TBHAC the most which is the literal opposite of their debut) but I still think that their other albums are good. I think their sophomore is good, humbug is still a record that I still struggle to get into fully but I like the individual songs as they are, suck it and see though is where I got a bit bored and uninterested but I still think it's fine, AM is the first album I fully heard from them and imop it is very front heavy with the singles being some of the first in the album and imop the singles at least being somewhat enjoyable over the deep cuts and I think the record is both kinda bland but I kinda cool and enjoyable at the same time and I do like "I wanna be yours" I guess because of it's simplicity and at this point it is their most popular song this year so I kinda can't escape it, TBHAC is their best album imop since their debut because the risk taking in this album does pay off and the sound is quite magnificent and Alex Turner does not sound that awful and is quite enjoyable in this record but the next one just does not compare with it's predecessor because I find "The Car" quite dull and lacks the same punch as TBHAC but it is certainly growing on me.

Tranquility base hotel and casino is probably their best work the storytelling is phenomenal and such a good concept album, I'd honestly put it on par with some of pink floyds works and the instrumentals are so rich in atmosphere it's refreshing really. The Car was a step down but still has extremely beautiful moments of promise for their Future, although some tracks definently felt like filler just so that Alex could play around with the lush strings. Humbug is probably their best rock work I think but I also agree with some of the vocals sounding disjointed with the instrumental but I guess that adds to the dizzying psychadelic sound they were going for. Their first 3 albums and their latest 2 are their best works imo, with the rest of their discography basically being filler

Bud, I love the car ... You're looking for teenage highs from a mature and more self aware album. Love this album and each new turn in the Arctic monkeys catalogue. Here at The Car you start a personal rant that might show you're blind to the quality of this album.. nevermind

nope... i mean even if their music doesnt sound like their 2000-2010s albums nowadays , theyre still growing . as a fellow indie & AM enjoyer i LOVED tranquility base hotel & casino once it came out in 2018 and even if arctic monkeys kept changing their sound i didnt feel this 'evolution' made them worse . i get the car wasn't very welcome by some fans though , i prefer tranquility base than the recent album . all i can say is that at least the band is willing to take new paths and mature after all these years whether u like it or not , n i still think theyre rlly talented and good at what they do :)

It is fair for people are dissapointed with The Car since most fans were not ready for Alex and the monkeys to stay on that chill wavelength of sound. However, the Car have some aspect of brilliance to it, IMO its more of an experience. You say in the The Car most of the songs sounds the same but Sculptures of Anything Goes is way different to Jet Skis on The Moat. Yes, none of the songs rock like previous albums but I think there is some beauty in that. Much like Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, The Car is meant to enjoyed kinda like a home listen instead that in a mosh pit. I think that Alex understands that he alienating a lot of fans with the new sound but it looks he doesn't give AF anymore and honestly gotta give it some respect for it. The Car is not their best work but its just another step into the evolution of this incredible band that always keeps me on the tip of my toes. and for those that liked Tranquility Base and The Car, you should listen to Everything I've Come To Expect from the Last Shadow Puppets. Still, cool video dude! love the editing and the analysis.

I want to say that there's quite a lot he seems to have gotten wrong in this video.... no matter what your opinion is totally valid! I also used to only like a song if it was upbeat and made me move, but elements that you said you didn't like weren't very accurate. Despite picking up on O'Malley's great basslines you hardly touched on Matt's drumming and he's really one of my heroes. Pretty visitors is often noted as some of his best work and I actually really think it works making such a feature of his drumming on songs like this and crying lightning- the hi-hats have a sizzle that feels like the aftermath of lightning strikes... and I think you somewhat missed the point of 'I wanna be yours' (I know it is a pretty sappy love song but) I don't think Alex actually wrote the lyrics, it's based on a John Cooper Clark poem... and despite what you might think having the slower heavy and lumbering guitar sounds in humbug and AM feels like a really powerful change to their sound, something about the depth and "swampy" feel of it is just intoxicating. I feel like that comes from allowing each note to really resonate and perhaps hold some meaning, also some of the guitar solos that come out of that to contrast it! it just seems to add a whole new level to the songs, I actually really like that each instrument is giving the others space, one might be occupying higher subdivisions while another provides an intriguing counter-melody/riff. something about it just seems to fit. Although facing some mild disappointment when I first heard TBHC it has really grown on me, and I really like lots of the songs, so I'm quite glad you seem to like that one. You are spot on that it's more about the interesting production in the latter two albums, I think it's hugely enriched by inspirations like David Bowie and John Lennon that feel quite prominent. I think Alex sometimes takes this a touch too far and tries to drag a lot with the lyrics, which means that often in more recent live shows people are losing interest as they can't sing along as much as with previous more rhythmic vocals. one thing I'd like to point out is how stubborn you are about the car's cover? (Matt took that picture himself, and it's a really interesting picture with angles and lines and a single focus- the car. I'm glad you like Bodypaint, I agree its one of the best songs on the album, but your last point about 505 doesn't hold up for me, if He went from singing Star treatment straight into that one and was expected to change his voice just because when he was a squeaky teen he sounded that way people would probably think he's a really weird guy.... overall, I agree with some of the more solid arguments against this being a solid band, but there's a lot more to it than just Alex.

I always find that AM are at their best when they’re experimenting. hence why Humbug and Tranquility are my favourite albums and AM is my least favourite by far. the debut and FWN I listen to with a lot of nostalgia, but I’m much less into the music than I was 10 years ago. Suck It and See leans heavily on Alex’s songwriting, and I think it showcases some of his best ever. probably third in my ranking (despite Brick by Brick). already mentioned AM, but I don’t dislike it at all. I think it’s boring, bland and not at all interesting in any way, but it’s the album that got me heavily into music as a 10 year old and I have a lot of nostalgia for it. The Car is something else entirely. it doesn’t sound like TBHC to me at all. I really love most of the songs on there but can’t get into two or three

You have to have been there in 2005 to know how AM came out of nowhere and how influential and face melting that album was, how they took the world by storm and became huge rock stars in a matter of seconds, it just blew us all off
