And it is actually explained in the manga too: caring for your hair is a way to be in tune with mana and a prerequisite to magic (similar to how chanting spells name works in other fantasies). It even come back as characterization at the very end of the story.

I usually do that when there’s already an anime, and unless it was bad I was gonna watch it. The anime will have 24 eps right? Do you know how much will be adapted from the manga? I wanna start reading as soon as the anime ends or at least reread it

It doesn't need a self-insert protagonist because we basically follow a wacky D&D-like scenario. The whole point is to follow the antics and critical fails of that group like you'd read a summary of a playergroup's previous sessions. It's not about the players but discovering the world as their characters explore the dungeon, the same way you'd blindly accept to play a "one shot homebrew story" from a GM friend and it ends up becoming a whole campain because why the heck not? Delicious in Dungeon -> DinD (they knows what they're doing xD)

Now that you say it, it has this critical role/Vox Machina vibes, which I really enjoy. I think the problem is how many fantasy anime nowadays, especially the Isekai brand, feel like power fantasies by guys who want to be pro gamers bot get stuck at Asylum Demon. Dunmeshi feels like what could be somebody writing down their D&D campaign.

Laios also has legit trauma surrounding hunger, because it was hunger pains which distracted him and lead to falin being eaten. There are even a few scenes where lairs is walking and then his stomach grumbles and he remembers his sister pushing him out of the way until a party member cracks a joke about his stomach bringing him back to the present. Such incredible storytelling and characterization

I feel like Dungeon Meshi is a masterpiece. It's not just about food but about ecosystems and about desire to live. Imagine if a person had zero appetite, that person can't survive or have any life goals anymore. Marcille is so multi-faceted, she's not just an "every day girl" but a freaking badass. I love her. And as a fan of Studio Trigger who cried at how badly Darling in the Franxx was written, I'm so glad they're taking on a good story with a writer who knew what they wanted in the ending.

I almost never like the "Human Fighter" characters, and usually like the Mage types non-human as my favourites, nor do I usually like the main "Protagonist" character, and prefer the secondary protagonists more This show has writing so good that Laios is my favourite character Due to various reasons, I have never seen a more relatable character ever

Faraway Paladin. A actual traditional Knight Errant/White Knight tale. Note not actually an Isekai as the author was required to make it Isekai to get it published but main character remembers nothing of past life and thus modern knowlage is not applied in the stories world it only gives a bit more motivation though emotion and as recarnation and rebirth the Isekai of a Goddess it ties in. But think of it as tradtional recarnation no memory of the past life. Has touches of Lord of the Rings Oh not the feminist term White Knight for a man who tries to dominate a woman by always being there to protect her. No original as in the female Whtie Knight who in fiction was a Paladin for Charlemagne. This guy male but like the White Knight of tales they out to save the weak no matter what they look like or gender and they are chaste by nature only saluting or tipping the hat like the White Hat of Western to the maiden and riding out of her life and into the Sunset. The fact that traditional tales are in a time where women were discriminated in is the only way they are discriminated against.

It's amazing that ten years ago we started reading this small Manga and thought it'd never get an adaptation or the love it deserves And now it's finally here and I see it getting the love it deserves, it feels so validating The manga gets just so good later on, especially as we learn more about the dungeon and why it was created, Senshi's backstory, the politics regarding the dungeon and how DEEP it gets about what "eating" truly is, hell you haven't even met Shuro properly or the fifth character that joins the group that tons of people consider to be their favorite of the WHOLE STORY What's amazing is that Ryoko Kui, the woman behind all of this, started writing Dungeon Meshi as a love letter to Western RPGs, games like D&D, Baldur's Gate or Divinity Original Sin is what got her into the genre, and now to see the love people are throwing at her passion project that started as her way to show love to the fantasy classics we grew up with? How it all came full circle is just poetic, it's amazing

Seriously, even the art in the initial chapters looks basic compared to what comes later! We get to witness-in real time-what seems to be a cute, little, comedic romp turning into actual epic fantasy. Such a privilege, first for manga readers, and now for viewers of the anime.

Ryoko Kui is an amazing and surprising storyteller. With no spoilers, there is a one page (maybe even one PANEL) gag that not only pays off in a massive way dozens of chapters later, but is integral to the conclusion of the story

yea we were blessed with some amazing fantasy this season, i wanted to mention frieren but decided dungeon meshi deserved to stand on its own

Marcille goes from goofy elf to the most badass character in the anime in the last episode. Her fails throughout the series so far leading to her absolute huge win is amazing.

One correction: if I remember correctly, it’s rather that the dungeon traps any human souls in it, which makes resurrection possible fi the person died in the dungeon. Also yeah Marcille is bad at normal healing magic but fucking excels at ancient magic, and she proceeded to do a ancient body rebuilding magic easily

just to clarify, marcille isn't bad at healing magic and i wouldn't go as far as to call her a necromancer either lol for one, she's incredible at healing magic! in her chapter in the adventurer's bible, it's stated that she originally enrolled in the magic academy to study the causes of disease and injuries and even created new healing magic (pg. 11). by all means, she's a world-class doctor! she just chooses not to numb the recovery pain from being healed because she believes that messing with somebody's senses is too risky to justify (adventurer's bible pg. 38) and while she's been shown to be more than capable of necromancy and other powerful magic, marcille is really just a scholar doing field research

Shows like this and Freiren is such a breath of fresh air considering that both of them are fantasy anime minus the whole isekai factor and it brilliantly depicts mythical creatures in a more of a dark fantasy like aesthetic, better than the isekai genre where not all but most of the mythical creatures/characters are more like rpg oriented mobs

I think one of the most realistic parts of the show is how the party split up and why Marcille, Laios, and Chilchuck are still there. They’re adventurers, it’s realistic that they wouldn’t throw away a couple days worth of work for a suicide mission. Marcille and Laios care for Falin so they’ll see it through, Chilchuck knows that if he needs gold they’ll pay him Sunshine knows the dungeon and has been through it all, he wants these young adventurers to see how beautiful it can be

The director is a really big DunMeshi fan. He's been waiting for this chance for a while.

Also, just a little tidbit. Not only the animation was done by Studio Trigger, but the music was composed by none other than Yasunori Mitsuda, the legendary composer of ... Chrono Trigger. That's a lot of Triggers to trigger our appetite for this show. Also, if you want to discover another fantastic manga with a weekly cooking monsters show, I highly recommend Taku Kuwabara's Drifting Dragons (yes, another DD). It's basically Dungeon Meshi, but in the sky with flying "dragons" instead of monsters, and in a steampunk world instead of medieval, with a graphic style EXTREMELY inspired by Miyazaki circa Nausicaä (the manga, not the movie). And it's freakkin FANTASTIC ! One of the absolute best mangas I've read in these past 5 years, both in terms of art than characters and worldbuilding. I wish the anime was at least 1/10th as good as the manga (it's just generic-ass Netflix CG cell shading, sadly, which completely destroys the visual charm of the manga).

Episodes 11 and 12 were just 🤯! Too many people are sleeping on this show. You described it beautifully. It has a little bit of a slow start but I think by the end of the second episode you can already see that it's getting better. Studio Trigger just nails anime girls. Yoko from lagan, pretty much half kill la kill, Rebecca from edgerunners. At this point I feel like they would have to try to miss the best girl

The internet goes crazy every time a new anime drops with a blond haired blue eyed elf girl who also happens to be a girlfailure

First I gave up after two episodes but than I renturned and I am glad I did. The show grew slowly on me. And the tightness of that group is one of the reasons (and now I am more and more curious about the world as well and the secrets of the dungeon). But Marcille is probably the reason I sticked with it in the end. She wears her heart on her sleave and I love how kind and caring she is

after 24 years of anime consumption, im at the point where the more anime that break the norm n cliches the better the experience I have with them - and for me it all started with shows like grimgar of fantasy and ash, parasyte, devilman crybaby. I need more like these, like Frieren and Dungeon Meshi 😩

Yeah, I don't know what that was about, I thought they were pretty likable, ESPECIALLY by the standards of anime orcs

Also the diverse/unique character designs- unlike most modern anime where you can only tell the difference between characters by hair/eye color. DM has all different ages, body types, races- you can see how much thought/effort/love the mangaka has put it this!

The characters and the world as well, I think equally. Having a functioning ecosystem in the dungeon which they want to understand is a great idea

i finished reading the manga right after the first episode came out and i am SO excited for fans of the anime to get to the latter half of the story, its one of my all time favorites in manga

As someone who read the manga i can only say, you are in for a treat, the entire thing will only get better from here and the ending is truly amazing. Also Laios is 10 times more insane than you think.

have just finished season 1, truly an awesome show. certainly a good hommage to the dungeon crawling genre, the cooking part is a very unqiue take and dive into the dungeon stuff. i didn't even expect them to start about the ecology of the dungeon! certainly my kind of stuff and very well executed.

What I love is that there’s no fanservice. That’s literally just it.

As someone who barely watches anime (and whose gf is downright allergic to it), we can't get enough of Dungeon Meshi. For these exact reasons. For the first few episodes we were like "wtf is wrong with us, why do we love this so much" but you summed it up perfectly--it's the warmth, the characters, the world that slowly reveals itself over time. I cannot wait to see where this show goes.

This man aint ready to what gonna come after ep 14...

It's a great story that can have a 12 episode arc that seems self-sufficient, then discovering it's all been prologue for the bigger story.

Shadow Colossus music is always a good background theme in essays and documentaries like this.

Marcille's one of my favorite characters in fiction.

Let me tell you, you're one of the first animeonlies I've seen that truly 'gets' Dungeon Meshi. Believe me, the anime has only scratched the surface of these characters so far

6:36 you'll soon realise that dungeon meshi is ABSOLUTELY NOT just a show about cooking monsters, it gets dark with everything that happens like the resolve of marcille about not wanting to be alone which leads her to become the dungeon lord and almost dying, the true desires of laios regarding monsters which also leads him to become the dungeon lord (to save marcille too though) and literal demons that come from another dimension and they reside in some dungeons, have an entire squad of elves dedicated to kill and prevent them from surfacing and preventing what would be the apocalypse and also that they are a hive mind trying to fulfill their only desire since the first time they tried it which is literally eating the desire of any living being, no matter if it is a plant or an insect or whatever living being they find :p In conclusion it's a very good anime and even more beautiful and cool manga. So for those who aren't very sure about what to about it, it's a 100% recommended. Y'all really need to read the manda and the anime too is specially funny 💕

This anime’s cooking aspect is why I wanted to watch the anime in the first place. ☺️ It’s so cozy to watch these characters talk about the monsters they cooked and how well the food tastes.

I made some Marcille fan art because she's become my all time favourite character. If you notice, she wears different hair styles depending on the occasion. that in on itself gives her more depth. She's also very expressive without being tropey. Truly a gem of a character

Trigger never fails to give something diferent. I love Marcille's hair changes.

Marcille is the cure for prudeness. Pretty gal, acts feminine, can be a bit motherly at times, good friend. And she has funny picky eater freakouts.

I love how much this anime is slowly getting recognition. Waiting for that episode 19 to drop soon.

Listen, i just appreciate that Marcille is a anime girl that is also a 3 dimensional character that only gets MORE complex as the series goes on. She expresses her own wants/goals that are distinct from the protagonist's (Liaos) and don't always align with his either!

Dungeon Meshi and Freiren is breath of fresh air for me, especially in a market oversaturated with "Harem Isekai" or "Nihilistic misanthrope high school harem" animus lmao.

I'm loving that fantasy anime is going back to being FANTASY ANIME, and showing signs of leaving isekai behind.

When I first saw this anime, I thought "Is this gonna be another anime with another loud, abnoxious and annoying character who complains a lot like Aqua from konosuba!?" But then, I realised that Marcille is at least better than Aqua.
