The brilliance of a good director. The shot of them first being deposited on the ground and the helicopter lifting off creating this engulfing cloud of dust, then just the two men in their suits standing as the dust clears. Its as if THEY are the aliens transporting into a normal town. One of my favorite films of all time. The story is so well put together (though as a writer I do see one gaping hole in the plot), but no matter this film still stands as superb story telling and the sound track is terrifying.

The two men in suits as the dust clears reminded me of Star Trek's depiction of expeditionary teams "beaming down" from an orbiting starship onto an alien planet (momentarily frozen, as in the original series, as a reflection of the time needed for the teleportation processing)--except that the alien planet is earth, and the time is now.
Best remake of this I ever saw was every time I stepped out of my house last year.
I always liked the dual screen shots from movies around this time, I think they add dramatic effect.

It also saves production money. Much cheaper to use a close-up still photo, than to create each set and place actors in there.
There is an enormous amount of brilliant films over the decades, but this one has absolutely baked and earned its way into my mind as my all time favorite film. Probably I am redundant in saying what others already have, but for me what takes The Andromeda Strain into a class all by itself is the character development of not only the four doctors, but also the way that even the cameo roles such as Paula Kelly, Jackson, Robinson, the Senator from Vermont, Major Manchester and General Sparks have sharply defined personalities which Robert Wise makes clear to us n the brief time he had. I too love the dual screen and sometimes three screens and it was used to great impact when showing Dutton and Leavitt descending into Wildfire and conversing about Why today’s kids are dropping out of school and showing them to be concerned citizens as well as dedicated doctors and scientists who “got tagged,” as Ruth put it. What amazing character development and personification! I will just add that the screen crawl which gives date, time and place such as the Situation Room of the White House gives TAS a documentary feel and the tension and conflict among the four doctors was added and executed, indeed, with “clinical precision.” So many things done so well! To finish, it’s no mean feat to me that both the villain and hero of the film are microscopic with the A strain the shifty ogre who is just a metamorphosis away from wiping out humanity and the hero being the correct PH range. Almost too many things are so right about TAS so I’ll finish by comfortably concluding that for whatever time remains in my life, I doubt any film will equal this one for it’s all around strong points too numerous to do Justice in my one piddly little post here.

Yes, even Stone's remark to his wife in the party scene that "the SDS has arrived, no doubt" is a stroke of pure historical, political, and cultural brilliance. Stuff like that is lost on audiences these days. 2:35

It's also Michael Crichton's only really personal story. Almost all of his novels are repeats of earlier stories by him (Westworld and Jurassic Park), or they are other people's stories altered. Congo' is Tarzan without Tarzan, for example.
Still one of the best sci fi movies ever made, and still scares your pants off. Also it is one of the few movies that is better than the book. Crichton could never end a book properly (except for Jurassic park)

This clip is a masterclass in cinematography. The split screen shots, where they are looking in the houses, and on the other side of the frame they have a shot of what they are seeing. And the shot at 1:20--they have an extreme closeup of a victim in the barber chair, while the scientists are in the distance on the right side of the frame, looking in. Yet it's in perfect focus. I wonder how they did that?

Split Diopters. They were used on many movies of the 1970"s. I believe one that I remember was "All The President's Men". Look at the shots of the reporters typing while the TV is on showing the President . You may find more articles from that decade from a magazine called American Cinematographer.
Saw this film when it came out at the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco. 70 millimeter screen. That's where 2001: A Space Odessey was shown in the late 60's. Both great movies (from 976-CREOLEMAN)!
Very creepy scene. The dead and the expressions they had when they died. A little unsettling fir me. But a fantastic film!!!

See 'Grand Prix' 1966 or 1968. Not only is form of montage done much better, but it also was copied by George Lucas for the pod race in 'The Phantom Menace'. The film 'Le Mans' 1970 also does such a montage to show the build-up to the start of the race. At one point there are twenty of more 'windows' open.

Despite all the drama of the situation (United States threatened with biological destruction from outer space, etc.) nothing very exciting goes on in The Andromeda Strain. Since nobody greatly feels or acts, we are left with the drama of people tensely sitting around in chairs, twisting dials and watching TV monitors. From time to time, somebody gets up and paces the room. NY TIMES
