    The illness that Alfred had was most likely Chron's Disease from what researcher's his biographer, Asser say. Alfreds grandson, Eadred seems to have had a similar illness. This was a great video , I enjoyed it. Thank you so much!!

But i must add, there are certain bacteria which can be ingested, which will cause devastating stomach conditions, which will eventually become fatal through process of cancer. It is painfully problematic when eating, and does become totally debilitating. I know someone suffering such, and even with today's medicine, there is no cure. Only management, food limitations.. And how foods were derived and handled or under cooked back then... !!!

    Excellent overview and close-in view of this period, like many others I think my introduction to the period is a mashup of TLK and the Vikings series (neither perfect historical vehicles tho TLK at least attempted to portray Alfred as vulnerable and vigorous simultaneously, the actor they chose was THE single most impressive part of that series too) - your podcast very efficiently recaps a lot of what I knew but it reinforces many details so easily lost or jumbled. And your choice of music, visuals are so compelling I was convinced they are from a series I must have missed! A last thought, not many can narrate a long complex piece without their audience tiring (I was a lecturer so I know the pitfalls) but you have just the right voice, phrasing, emphasis and modulation, if this had been a 6 hour podcast I would have still wanted more! Bravo!

Otherwise, this is an excellent presentation. More, please. 😊 I'd love to have the Viking chronicles. What Scandinavian country invaded where and what did that yield. Who stayed in each (UK) place and what did they contribute to history? Did any become local lords or kings? Who married whom? Who of later Viking generations outside of Scandinavia became famous? What were the Finish doing during these times? Inquiring minds want to know. Thank, again. 🎉

So many people put distortedAI images into their videos images with things that don’t belong, distorted hands, horses without heads and spears sticking out of bodies and peoples heads. I must complement the author on the excellent use of AI images to create realistic interpretations, without twisted, ugly distortions.

    When I learned about Alfred as a kid it was just the story about him letting the cakes burn. How sad that this amazing man is reduced in popular myth to this nonsense. I learned more when studying old english at university. He learned to read aged 12, lieracy was then confined mostly to clerics, but understood the importance of the written word. He ordered that the bible be translated into English so that the people could hear the teachings in their own language.

    When I talk about Alfred, I always think about. Which is better? Ruler of the lands or ruler of the people. Alfred's title of King of the Angelo-Saxons proves that he was the king of the people, not the lands. He might have ruled the lands, but he was truly the ruler of the people. That is what makes him a great king, more than anything else.

  • @SKILLIUSCAESAR

    But he was the ruler of the anglo saxon lands in Britain… hence the name lol. It’s not like he was the king of Christendom, only the lands on the British island not ruled by Danes/Wales. So I’m not sure how the 2 can be mutually exclusive 🤔

    @@SKILLIUSCAESAR I said that he ruled the people of the Angelo Saxon lands, not all of Christendom. To me, it says a lot that they say that he ruled the people. It shows how the people saw him. A ruler of the land could be hated by the people of the land that they rule. It is important that he was viewed as ruler of the people as well as the lands he ruled.

  • @SKILLIUSCAESAR

    @SKILLIUSCAESAR

    @@Tora-no-shi yes I was using christendom as an example. My point is that king of the anglo saxons WAS referring to both people and the british lands they were occupying. The map of which was in a constant state of flux. I think ur overlooking Alfred’s own ambition & propoganda, as it was very important to him that he be considered the ONLY saxon king. If he wouldn’t live to see ONE England he’d at least make sure Alfred was the ONE saxon king. (Hence making Mercia subordinate and basically taking over london) His advisors who left us the saxon chronicle crafted this legacy, which obviously caught on with the people bc he also earned it.

    @@SKILLIUSCAESAR In that case a lot of great people in history should be looked at differently. Propaganda and what is written about them is the main thing that we have left. I do feel that most people focus only on Alfred and not the other people who did great things to make England what it has become. Especially when it comes to the Angelo Saxon time in history. Sure he did wonderful things, but it would not have been able to be done without the others. So I look at what he did for the people. What others outside of the country wrote and said about him. For all the bad things there are a lot of good things as well.
