    Brilliant video, just what I needed as a middle aged lady attempting to fit a door frame. Your explanation of the architrave has given me hope that my project could look quite tidy eventually. Unfortunately I have block on one side and stone on the other to tackle. Not looking forward to that...Will probably be distracted looking at my motorcycle for some time..... But I am determined to win this eventually. The more work I do now, the more motorcycling fun when its warmer.... Thanks for sharing your expertise, much appreciated, : )

    Another great vid Andy. I've only had to do one door opening so far & that was a fire door from our garage into our kitchen many years ago. I made the liner from MDF because it was a thick breeze block wall (non-load bearing) & then I added the architrave & stops as normal. Also fitted a heavy duty mortice lock with a key on the kitchen side only with intumescent stripping all around the frame & fire rated foam filler to seal up all the gaps. And, I also have one of those old metal Screwfix cases with the old 0500 phone number on it. Screws in mine.

    A tip from my Grandad when you fit door frame with stops included make sure the hinge side is perfectly plumb and solidly attached, then hang door, close door then you can adjust the opposite side of frame to fit the closed door which will line the frame with the door before you attach attach it to the wall.Brilliant on old wonky walls.

    For me (down here in Essex) a door frame is what an external door fits into and is secured to external brickwork and a door lining is for internal doors and is fixed to an internal brick/block/stud wall.

    a door frame is essentially a door lining, where the stiles and heads are made from a single timber that have the door stops machined into it in one piece. Yes, your external door frame is a frame but a door 'frame' with a separate door stop is only a door lining. Many older properties have internal door frames with the jamb built in and modern properties have door linings with separate stops. He explained it correctly but for 28mins - wtf.

A problem I've encountered is the linings are not always flat/straight, so you have to keep this in mind when checking for plumb and compensate with the packing. Also, how quiet do you need a bog to be? Or maybe you need to shield the utility room from the occasional berloosh.

    When I built my house 40 years ago, I did not want architraves. Was told I had to have them. Ten years ago, I moved to a 60 year old house- that does not have architraves. There is a plaster framing strip that allows this to be done. But carpenters hate the idea, because the fit has to be much better.... Also the frame has to be fitted before plastering. One of the things the architect had insisted on, along with lift off hinges (great) and wooden treads that mean you are not trying to match different thicknesses of floor covering in the middle of the door. Amazing that we are still building houses the way the romans did (brick/block walls, with a tiled roof on timber rafters)- 2000 years with little progress. Compare with road transport or aircraft- changed beyond recognition in less that 100 years...

I am still old school and prefer imperial measurements, metric to me is like going abroad and thinking in English before speaking in Spanish, French or Greek, I think in feet and inches and convert to metric if I have to, but prefer to measure in imperial. But I guess as my generation move on, the country will eventually become more metric orientated. Having said that, when I was young I was an electrician and even the cables had just converted to metric, 1mm 2.5mm etc and yet I think the common screws that held switches and sockets to the walls were 4ba ? funny old world. 🙂

    This is like post traumatic therapy - I live in an old house and decided to replace 3 x old painted doors with new finished ones…nightmare of a job. None of the door linings were square, the door stops were built into the linings so you couldn’t just remove them. And cos the new doors are finished you could only remove material off the top and bottom not the sides…so I ended up having to plane, sand the door linings to fit the new doors…3 days later I finished the job

  • @Monkeh616
    @Monkeh61610 ай бұрын

    Ahh, imperial vs metric. It's basically impossible to just switch - sure, we could just do 700x2000mm (70x200cm! ahh, rational unit systems) doors, but then everyone needing a replacement is in trouble, and nobody wants to stock two different systems. As for the all-metric tape, they're great for most things (I love mine, and I actually took a box of them across the pond a little while back because people wanted them), but the imperial bits aren't entirely redundant - if you take a look at any dual marked tape (5m and above anyway), you'll find they highlight 16" intervals and, and this one is fun, 19.2" intervals - 8ft/5. These are still important, because as many sheet materials (ply, OSB, some plasterboard) are still nominally imperial for the same reasons as doors, you can quickly find yourself in trouble if you put up framework with metric spacing. Never getting away from this mess in my lifetime..
