“….the Amplifying Gas”
Sound performance with Keiji Haino and Russell Haswell
Curated by Pedro Rocha
Video: Francesco Margaroli
The second event of the Public Program dedicated to Cerith Wyn Evans’ exhibition “….the Illuminating Gas” is an evening of live music: a performance for voice and electronics by Keiji Haino will be preceded by an opening act by Russell Haswell on electronics. Both musicians are long time collaborators of Evans’, and key figures in his musical background.
Keiji Haino has become a living legend on the international scene, with a decades-long career, expanding through Rock, Free Improvisation, Noise, singing, songwriting, Solo Percussion, Psychedelic, Minimalism and Drone. He has been active in group and solo projects since the early 70’s such as Lost Aaraaf, Fushitsusha, Nijiumu, Aihiyo, Vajra and Nazoranai. Vastly prolific in his output, he has been involved in a big number of collaborations having worked with Faust, Kazuo Ohno, Derek Bailey, Min Tanaka, Loren Connors, John Zorn, Makoto Kawabata, Pan Sonic, Boris, Stephen O’Malley, Oren Ambarchi, Jim O’Rourke or Charles Hayward, amongst many others. His sound exhales a striking singular intensity, free of the specificities of style, appearing as clearly in a fragile song as in an extreme noise explosion.

I always think that to do great art you need to have full confidence in it, an small amount of self-doubt could destroy your work, there should be no such thing, every thought putting you down should be battled.

@@beuzebu6667 totally dude society will always want you to follow the same rules as predicted, you can't be an individual no more Now days, but as I say people will always talk shit whether you are doing good or bad! It doesn't Matter. Just be who you are, only have one life with limited time.

Keiji Haino is a noise and experimental musician from Japan. He's been doing this since the 70's, although his current setup with various electronics supplementing is more recent (he started off in Free Jazz and later moved towards a more harsh psychedelic improv rock approach with the band Fushitsusha, his first solo records in the 80's were mostly guitar and vocal performances). He's a fascinating guy with a long history in Noise, Drone, and related genres, as well as playing various unusual instruments such as the Hurdy Gurdy. He's also still active now (though he's been quiet as of late, I presume because he's nearly 70 and there's a global pandemic that especially endangers the elderly going on right now), despite being old as hell.
