I like this movie. There's definitely problems, but the Spiderman character in this movie is very well done. Raimi had the best story and flow though.

Fun fact: _The Amazing Spider-Man_ and _Life of Pi_ both came out in 2012 and feature a scene in which Irrfan Khan talks about a character named Richard Parker. Coincidence?

He starts off as a jerk really and when he first becomes Spider-Man he’s seeking vengeance and doesn’t exactly know what it means to be a hero yet. Then when he saves the kid on the bridge he can finally call himself Spider-Man. That’s good stuff to me

I get it, but the movie doesn't do a good job portraying it. Like a single moment of him after everything went down looking at the killer sketch and throwing it away would've been enough to tell the audience that Peter is done with his search for revenge. Instead, they just don't mention it and it's forgotten. There's a reason for it, but it's not properly informed to the audience (many people when the ASM2 came out pointed out that they never really bothered to properly close the thread of his uncle's killer).

We can complain about that, but it is not the worst thing done to the character of Uncle Ben. The worst thing is how his death doesn’t have that impact the original one did and he brought it upon himself by trying to dive after the gun that the thief had. It was legitimately funny.

It's no huge favorite but The Amazing Spider-Man is a guilty pleasure for me. I can't help but like these action scenes in darkness. Spider-Man swinging around in buildings in daylight gets old after a while. I also became invested with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. This feels like a more realistic portrayal, and Peter's motivations worked for me here. There are other Spider-Man movies I like better; I agree ASM has some problems.

@Reggie Lovato He gave a great performance, but aside from the strained relationship with Harry which wasn`t even as bad as it was in The Comics and one scene where he goes on a misogynistic rant(Norman was a huge misogynist in The Comics in part due to his vow to never get emotionally attached to a woman again after his wife Emily`s death which was partially his fault as he gave the doctor poor advice and in part due to his Social Darwinist mindset),he came off as Willem Dafoe playing Norman Osborn, not The Comic Book Character himself .Chris Cooper may have been older than Norman Osborn in The Comics and may not have had The Character`s trademark reddish-brown hair but in the one scene he had in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 he nailed The Character`s coldness and callousness towards his own son to perfection! "I never imagined I`d die like this, looking at my own son and seeing a stranger."The 2002 Spider-Man Film had the same problem as the 1981 and 1994 Animated Series,it tried to make Norman Osborn when he wasn`t The Green Goblin a sympathetic character when Norman Osborn is not supposed to be a sympathetic character. Even before he became The Green Goblin, Norman Osborn in The Comics was a cold-hearted Social Darwinist with criminal ambitions.

I mean, it's not "disgraceful" to give a great actor a smaller role, even if he just vanishes in the film. Wasn't Max von Sydow in The Force Awakens for, like, two minutes?

The thing is Max Von Sydow is seen getting his head chopped off in the village. 100% different than just vanishing like batman mid-film. I can't see how you got this confused. Chris wasn't making the point that he was wasted talent.

I don't remember the movie very much, but didn't Peter tell Gwen about the antidote? Because he worked with Connors for a bit in Oscorp. Gwen doesn't make it, she only prepares an existing antidote. And Connors himself doesn't want to change people into lizards, it is the lizard in him that does it, remember Peter asking Connors "what if the newly added organism takes control?". But yeah it is a bit thin overall. I enjoyed this movie but everything happened too fast so I prefer Sam Raimi's movies.

I cannot believe how badly they botched Venom in 3. Here's a little backstory on Eddie Brock. Believe it or not, he has one of the saddest backstories in comic book history. Eddie Brock was someone who ran into a stream of bad luck. He was far from perfect, but he wasn't a bad person. His bad luck begins when a man claiming to be the Sin Eater contacts him. However, when Brock writes an exposé on this guy, it doesn't take long for Spider-Man to capture the real Sin Eater, resulting in Brock being fired in disgrace. He didn't lie. He was just given bad information and suffered for it. He was a victim of circumstance. Soon after, Eddie's wife divorced him, his father cut all ties with him, and he had to work for tabloid magazines in shame. He blames Spider-Man for capturing the real Sin Eater, but this was merely a way to help him cope with his severe depression, and when he started to feel good about himself, when he started weightlifting and getting in shape, when he started to take back his life, he found out he had cancer. Eddie was contemplating suicide at this point, but this led to him going to a church and ultimately begging God for forgiveness. But of course, this was the same time that Spider-Man was removing the symbiote and it didn't take long for the alien lifeform to find its way to Eddie. Feeling rejected, the symbiote sought revenge on Spider-Man through Eddie Brock, and Brock's coping mechanism of blaming Spider-Man became something very literal. The symbiote was a way for Eddie to take back his life after everything he went through. There was meaning behind Venom. There was meaning behind the bond Eddie shared with the symbiote. It turned someone powerless and on the verge of suicide into a strong warrior, and he called himself Venom because that was what he was forced to spew out to the public at the time. That, my friends, is Venom. How does the film handle this character? He fakes a picture of Spider-Man robbing a bank and gets fired for it. He blames Peter not only for that, but for stealing a woman, Gwen Stacy, who wasn't even his. He talks about her as if he wants to marry her but isn't even in a relationship with her. Then, he goes to the church just like he did in the comics, and he asks God, I'm dead serious, to kill Peter.

Jesuz Jr if you were really really into movies at the turn of the century you'd realize there weren't much reboots...sure there were some remakes but the source material wasn't reinvented so drastically. Before Batman Begins there were little to no reboots that went in different directions. Nolan focusing on the Batman origins and giving him a grounded gritty feel was the first of its kind especially after the Batman franchise had tanked with Batman and Robin. Just as James Bond had sorta tanked with Die Another Day, it was in need of a fresh gritty start - enter casino royale. Of course casino royale isn't exactly saying it was inspired by Batman Begins, but Begins began (no pun intended) this darker, character driven model that films like Casino Royale have followed since. Plus it doesn't take a genius to spot this - Begins came out in 2005 and Royale came out in 2006

This movie sucked. It pissed me off when it came out how people tried to justify this film by saying 'oh it's a setup movie, the sequels are going to lift the story that's been set up in the first movie!' - that is an infuriatingly bad excuse, how about make a good first movie and make the second better - like the Toby McGuire Spider-Man's did! Never saw the sequel to this, don't think I'll bother really

Probably the thing that bothers me the most about TASM is all the dropped storylines. A lot of time is devoted to Peter investigating his parents' disappearance, and then that's dropped completely after the first act. Peter spends a good chunk of the second act looking for his uncle's killer, and then that's dropped completely as well when he learns a lesson from Captain Stacy. Dr. Ratha is a recurring antagonist who just disappears from the plot after the bridge scene, because his death scene was cut. So the third act becomes about stopping the Lizard from destroying New York, and there's a post credits scene where some mysterious dude tries to recruit Dr. Connors, which obviously goes nowhere because the Amazing series was cut short. I feel like this movie spent too much time trying to set up other movies, and as a result, it really doesn't stand up well on its own.

I had to keyword search ‘amazing spider man sucked’ to revive this sentiment and confirm my memory wasn’t failing. People watching the movie today are claiming it to be a good movie and the top reviews highlighted on IMDB are all positive. It’s like I’m living in an alternate universe. I don’t even remember why I didn’t like this movie. I don’t even remember the plot, but seeing the scenes reminded me that a lot of the writing didn’t make sense to me. Even my wife who hated this movie more than me at the time was excited that it was on a streaming service we have and suggested we watch it. So if I’m the only person thinking this right now in 2022, then maybe I’m going crazy and this video that has no recent comment is the alternate universe I’m living in. Someone tell me I’m not going insane.

Fully agree. I've watched this twice and found myself distinctly underwhelmed on both occasions. Wasn't it made just so Sony could honour some legal obligation for retaining the licence for Spider-man? Emma Stone was the only good thing in it, though I see no reason why she would ever have any interest in this particular version of Parker. The romance had no basis. The fact that Sam Raimi's films still resonate emotionally after all these years speaks volumes.

This is a brutal, brutal review by Chris. Absolutely deserved, but I think it also kind of shows how everything around Andrew Garfield was just the absolute bottom of the fucking barrel. The writing of his character, the story choices, all of it was so awful and Garfield couldn't do anything about it. He performed about as good as I think he could have with what he was given. And as Chris tears deeper into this movie's asshole, inch by inch, I think it becomes more and more evident he was never close to being the problem in those movies.
