We may not even have a doctor. Kaiser, Mayo clinic, Cleveland clinic and others are using A 'eye' to dictate to doctors treatment plans, monitor patients, and discharge patients. Kaiser nurses are speaking out.

1979... Only doctor in my small Iowa town was a family practitioner. Laboured for 36hrs and ended with a natural birth of my first. 1984 decided to birth at home...he that same doctor came to my house hugged and congratulated me on my first home birth! That same doctor had no problem with my decision to NOT vaccinate my babies. Those doctors are gone.

Medicine died with the onset of computers. Thank you for having the courage to speak out and attempt to wake people up. I was a NP for 20++ years and left medicine 13 years ago. Recently my sidekick LPN nurse had an onset of dizziness and nausea. Her husband took her to the local ER and the physicians there ordered 2 CT's one with contrast and one without, an MRI, a boatload of bloodwork, EKG, and 3 consults: Neurology, GI, cardiac, and she was kept overnight for observation. She was given several medications and sent home without determining the cause of her symptoms. I spoke with her a day later and listened to her story and asked about the PE that was done. It was very minimal, NO ONE looked in her ears. I suggested she go to her PCP and have him look with an otoscope. Her ears were severely impacted with earwax, he cleaned out her ears and within a couple of days she was as good as new.

I had a doctor like that when I was a child. Dr. Blumfield. He was the doctor to our entire family, newborns to great grandparents. He came to our home when we were sick. Vast knowledge and good common sense. Down to earth stuff, sunshine, fresh air, do some work, cod liver oil, limited sweets. Occasionally someone would have a big ‘ol shot of antibiotic in the rear end from him. Rarely someone would need to go to the hospital. But mostly, we would just sweat out our fevers and take lots of fluids. We all survived unscathed. If only. . .

About 10 years ago, my daughter's pediatrician had died. He had in fact been my pediatrician for a year or so before I got too old, but for 20 years my daughter was cared for by him; he was one of those doctors that was old school. She too had to go on to another doctor as she was an adult. But how I grieved to know he had passed. I knew he was last of that breed of doctor. The world is just a little worse for his passing.

Dr. Hwang was amazing and knew everything about his patients and actually took time to take care of his patients instead of keeping it to 5 minutes, would actually listen to his patients and take time to answer questions and would ask what you were doing at home to treat yourself before running to doctor and would recommend lifestyle changes to improve my health instead of writing up a prescription. I don’t say this very often but this is an example of the good old days. I’m 74 and still remember when my family physician made home visits. Yes, you read that right! Today every physician I have, whether a specialist or family physician, is glued to his computer screen when he enters the room and barely makes any eye contact. And is in a great hurry to see the next patient. EVERY physician should see this video! I wish I had the nerve to send it to my doctor but alas I would be dismissed as a patient if I did and since there is such a huge shortage of physicians where I live, I can’t risk it. Thank you Dr. Dhand for another great and informative video!

When I graduated High School in 1980 I had a great doctor. He was brand new just out of med school. As other physicians computerized he resisted and continued his old school ways of hand written prescriptions, blank white paper he wrote all notes on during discussion, blood work taken and analyzed in his and his partners small clinic, nurses we all knew on a first name bases and as much time as it took to either resolve my problem or send me to a specialist where specialized care would be given. In the 2010's I noticed a change and soon after I was rushed like cattle into a room from new nurses I've never seen due to high turnover rate and a quick discussion as most of his time was entering data on a tablet. Blood work was a drive across town and a long wait time in a lobby. He told me he has no choice because of the heavy administrative and government mandated Bull Shit (his exact words). What has happened to medical care in America?

I had a dr like this 28 years ago. I was unwell and was used to using alternative remedies and dowsing to administer the right foods etc. I dowsed and discovered I was pregnant. I had not any idea that I was but was experiencing pain. I went to the Dr and told him what I had dowsed. He did not bat an eyelid , he told me I was correct and needed to go to the hospital right away. I had an ectopic pregnancy. The Dr came to the hospital to visit me and then came to my home a few times, walking up a steep hill with no road to see me. He was amazing and he had faith that I knew my own body, I also felt seen. He retired a long time ago and now if I ever go to the surgery then you are given 5 mins and the sense that you have to get out of there as soon as possible.

My personal internist is an amazing woman. Even after our local hospital started utilizing intensivists and house doctors she would honor her patients if they felt more comfortable with her stopping by and reviewing their treatment. She had valuable information to bring to the table. Knowing the patient is an underestimated advantage. Example: a patient who never complained of pain even in appropriate situations is suddenly writhing in pain. You best take notice. Amazingly, her elderly mother took ill and got septic in the hospital. She was told there was only so much they could do with her age of 74 and she was declining quickly. She set up her home with EVERYTHING and nursed her mother back herself with one other caregiver. Money was no object. I forgot to mention she was a cardiac nurse before she went to med school. 15 years later and mom is still doing great. Sadly, I moved far away and have never found another physician like her.

Most sat 6-10 feet away typing on computers and barely looking at me. Not even interested in what I say or what the skin looks like up close. Then given tons of pills which I had to stop every one of because I got terrible skin reactions to each pill. No longer on any pills. Solving the skin problem from the inside out on my own and with alternative practitioners who are derided by the medical field. Getting better little by little the further away I get from these sickos.

When I was young, most family doctors were also surgeons, unlike today's family doctors who are just referral agents and pill pushers. When I had my son, I did not go to an obstetrician. My family doctor took care of me and brought my son into the world. When I had to have a vein ligation, I did not go to a vein specialist. My family doctor performed the operation. Today, I do my best to stay away from doctors. I do not even have a family doctor anymore since there is a huge shortage of family physicians in my area (Ontario, Canada). I take good care of myself and eat well, take specific nutritional supplements and am on absolutely no medications whatsoever. I am 77 years old.

I also recall an annual exam in which my doctor didn't even lay a hand on me, didn't check my heart or my lungs. Just asked me a few questions while he stared at a screen, and I was sent on my way. Thank you, Dr. Dhand, for relaying this heartwarming story about an exemplary doctor from a bygone era. When viewing this story in relation to the day to day realities of the modern medical industry, it really shows how much medical practitioners have fallen from their calling. Now it is far more common for a doctor to treat patients more like a widget in a factory, trying to maximize the turnaround time to get them out the door. Ultimately, for many doctors, the system they are in is one that engenders a mentality of looking at medical practice as an assembly line, instead of line of work dedicated to the well being of others. Sometimes the greatest elixir for a sick person doesn't come in a pill bottle. Rather, the greatest remedy comes from knowing that their physician cares enough to treat them with the dignity they deserve.

I completely agree with you! My current PCP has been seeing me for a little over ten years. Whenever I see her (rarely), she’s on her laptop, clicking away, telling me what screenings are due or overdue. In a typical appointment, our real interaction might be ten minutes out of a 45 minute appointment. This is after I have waited an hour in the waiting room and another half hour in the exam room. I miss my “old” doctors.

I have been blessed to have many good doctors throughout my life. This clip caused me to reflect on them. I was reminded of my childhood ophthalmologist. I was born with strabismus and nystagmus. He was my doctor for many years. When I was 14, he decided that the time had come to surgically correct the muscle imbalance in my right eye. On the Tuesday before the surgery, he had me come in for a pre-op appointment. As I left he said see you Thursday. On Wednesday, I went into the hospital to prepare for the surgery. That evening, he came to my room and re-examined me. He talked to my parents and showed them something he had noticed on Tuesday. He then explained that he would be working on the left eye instead. The surgery was successful. He continued to work with me for several more years. It was during the new age of HMOs. I could no longer use him because I needed to go through an optometrist first. It was another 20 years before I would be referred to an ophthalmologist to deal with the strabismus and amblyopia. The new surgeon did surgery on my right eye, but, did not do the post surgery follow up my previous surgeon had insisted on. I never went back. I still have issues with strabismus but have now been diagnosed with glaucoma as well. I now have a new young ophthalmologist as my childhood doctor has passed. I expect that this will become another long term relationship as glaucoma is a degenerative disease of the eye. Yes he enters his data into the computer but he lets me look at the screen and ask questions. He explained and showed me the results of my testing. He listened to my concerns about eye drops. He did a SLT instead of drops. He took time to explain his thinking and what he would be the next steps in my treatment.

My former doctor would always spend a few minutes asking me questions that might trigger any questions I forgot to ask before he let me go. He had excellent bedside manners and didn't make me feel rushed. Unfortunately for me and all his other patients, it came time for him to retire. He was bad for the medical industry because he raised their bar very high. It's a disheartening that I haven't found anyone close to his quality of care yet.

Ah, if only we could turn back time...but we can't so the old school way of medicine is relegated to the archives. In the US where most get health insurance through their employer it's a revolving door of plans, your old doc now being out of network, lack of continuity as clinics are gobbled up by mega companies (with an interest in timed visits and profits).

There are indeed a few left, but only a few. I wish we could get back to this, especially in rural areas where there is a dearth of health care thanks to LME's closing all the local folks down once they agreed to merge.

Health care is no longer about health, it's a business. It's about the Bottom Line. However...while you may not do house calls,You, Dr. Dhand, and a handful of others here on youtube, who spend a Lot of time online, interacting with us mere people..and striving to help us with Healthy suggestions & Education....& Warnings. You are the new generation of the old Health Care system. You Are saving lives by doing this! & We do so much Appreciate Your Efforts.

Most Drs jump around too much to build caring personal relationships with their patients. And, Hospitals that won’t grant Primary docs hospital rights are an issue!

Time was when the family doctor assessed and treated their patient in the ER, negotiated the referral to the treating specialist, and visited their patient in hospital before discharge. The other big issue is when this doctor retires, he is probably working at the rate of 1.5 to 2 full time equivalent doctors, the new ones are focussed on lifestyle and flexibility, so unlikely to work at more than 0.5 FTE’s. And then people wonder why they can’t find a Family Primary Care doctor…
