Hailed as 'the most powerful voice in rock' by his fans, Graham Bonnet slays when it comes to pure rock power. With his pompadour, hawaii shirts and THE voice, he's able to sing the craziest things in the highest tenor range while still regaining a masculine baritone vocal sound - This is why I'd describe him as a 'baritenor', although he certainly started out as a bright-voiced tenor singer before evolving into his iconic, deep-toned wail. Having gone through loads of different music styles throughout the decades, Graham started out out as a pop singer and eventually evolved into a heavy metal howler. His voice is naturally EXTREMELY loud, which has been noted by many of his fellow musicians, including Barry Gibb and the members of Rainbow, and there's lots of fun stories regarding his vocal power.
Unlike the popular opinion often says, Bonnet is generally a great live vocalist in my eyes. He has had his share of worse live vocal moments too, but many of his (primarily earlier) live performances are blistering, and he still sounds amazing while singing in a suitable range! (Which remains rather superhuman)

Most powerful singer I’ve ever heard !
Had the absolute privilege to see Graham with Alcatrazz in 1986 in Baltimore during the "Dangerous Games" tour. Got to hang with him and the band after the show. An absolute awesome person. Loves his fans. A guy handed him a stack of at least 30 albums for him to sign. He sat with this guy for like 10 minutes and personalized every album. I said to him afterwards if that was the norm. He said it was a first, he was blown away that this guy had every record he was on along with stuff he was totally unaware of. I always liked Graham, but after witnessing that I totally respect him. Put me and my two buddies on the guest list for their next show in Washington DC (The Bayou) along with ALL ACCESS passes. Genuine man. 30 years later he still has my respect.

Mark Bishop totally agree with all your thoughts about Graham. He’s a genuinely great guy who appreciates his followers. I’m from his hometown and have had the pleasure of seeing him perform several times and have also chatted with him. Nothing is too much trouble for him. I also respect him enormously. Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience.
Vocal gymnastics. The guy has got an incredible range and could shatter a wine glass in his day. Pure power and range like very few rock vocalists.

I've followed his career since the early 80s. He has a one of kind amazing voice. He's among my favorite vocalists that include Paul Mccartney and Van Morrison.
He has still got it and in his mid 70's, incredible. Meanwhile younger singers like Bon Jovi can no longer sing, having said that very few have Graham's pipes!
Loved him in Marbles..so cute. Then he became like a thin duke with massive voice power all over again. Such talent x

I was lucky enough to see him play with Alcatrazz /Yngwie in a small club in NY. Truly phenomenal singer! Chilling.
Incredible singer with incredible high range power. I’m really not quite sure what he did as far as vocal technique because there’s really nobody else you can compare his voice to. It’s a shame he never really had a mainstream hit after the rainbow days.

@@therealawakener7 Patton is a great singer. Too schizophrenic sounding and lyrically challenged to really choose as a favorite. The top 3 singers are Chris Cornell, John Fogerty, Graham Bonnet. Patton gets an honorable mention. The rest suck. So does your mom. She told me, ask her.

Phenomenal vocalist!
I bought an Alcatrazz Japanese import cd over 20 years ago because I wanted to listen to what Steve Vai played on the album. I remember diggin Graham’s voice but having a second go at it years later without the vai blinders on Graham easily one my favorite singers and frontmen. I’ll never understand he got so much shit for his hairstyle. He was so far in front of the rest in not only vocal skills but stage presence and all around coolest motherfucker ever to walk out on stage.

Can see why my fiance's brother and friends were all going to Donnington back in the day. I was just a teenage lassie with a taste for glam, stuff off the wireless lol. Took till later in life to appreciate heavier stuff.

Thank you for the amazing music and performances from throughout the years, you've been a big influence over the years. I made this video years ago because I was always so blown away by your incredible vocal talent whenever I heard one of your songs & it's safe to say that feeling hasn't left... I still listen to those recordings and wonder 'how the hell does he do that?'. It also helps that your discography has some incredibly fine albums in it, as well as a long lineup of the guitar greats of their time period. It's been a joy to see you perform recently with such strength to your voice even after all these years, it's remarkable how those notes and that resonance haven't gone anywhere. Hope you're having an amazing time filled with music, Graham, you deserve all the praise you've been getting because there's nobody else who can sing like you. As a side note, it would be great to hear your voice in a more acoustic setting in the future to hear the dynamics and the depth of your voice in a more stripped down setting (Cash's American Recordings-style), I think that would fit you great because the one time you did that acoustic performance of "Love's No Friend" here on KZread you absolutely killed it.
It’s a shame that he never got the mainstream attention he deserved. I think it may be due to the fact that his lyrics and songwriting just never really hit the nail on the head as far as having a big hit single. His songwriting just has an altogether different taste to it, and even though his vocal versatility is incredible, it seems as if he only chose certain styles of rock music that didn’t necessarily have the largest audience. In 2019 he’s still performing and doing an excellent job. The fact that he’s been singing at full steam for around 50 years is incredible.

Chris Cornell, Robert Plant, Jeff Buckley, Freddie Mercury, Myles Kennedy, Richie Kotzen, Glenn Hughes, Bon Jovi, Axl Rose, Daniel Heiman, even Dave Grohl can hit most of those notes, just to name a few. Not saying it's not incredible, it's just that is more common than you think, cause I saw one comment saying that this is the only one who could keep up to Freddie Mercury, but the truth is that Freddie Mercury it's just another one in the list. If you want a wonderful low range pick up Layne Staley, if you want an emotional high range you've got Jeff Buckley, if you want a less emotional but more technical high range you have Myles Kennedy, if you want a 10/10 high range you've got Daniel Heiman and if you want a singer who is the best overall and that sounds really good and can sing masterfully in every part of his range you've got chris cornell

To sum up his Live problems in 1984...Yngwie... Not saying it's entirely Malmsteen fault, but combine frustration, band tension, and the fact he had to sing over Yngwie amps....voice easily became strained.

Again, Didn't have to sing over Yngwie's Amps and Steve Vai was a MUCH Less demanding Guitarist all around. And Bonnet became even MORE Deadly when Danny Johnson, A More reserved Guitar Player, actually let him have the spotlight.

People always put Mercury on this nonsensical pedestal when in reality he was not half the singer his fans think he is. Average tenor that usually wasn't able to sing his songs correctly live. He had incredible charisma, stage presence and was fronting one of the biggest bands of all time.

Tbh I wouldn’t call him a baritenor, in my opinion he is a true tenor because he does not hesitate to use 100% of his voice, unlike most tenors who sing with lighter approach, which is also easier way to do it, unlike Graham’s give it to the max. That pseudo baritonish sound comes from dampening the larynx, which is no surprise knowing the fact that he himself said that he was inspired and learned to sing by imitating opera singers, like Mario Lanza, and in opera, low larynx, full power and dark sound is must. Otherwise he is just a regular tenor by all means.. passagios, tessitura etc But I can understand baritenor description

In retrospective I agree that that he’s a tenor... Not because of his range but because of the absolute effortlessness of his upper register, he can sit there easily with incredible flexibility, he has a rare deep quality to his tone which makes his voice very unique.

@@GGSOG passagios and tessitura are, you can not change that. No way baritone could sing chest voiced A4 and above as he can. People have miss understanding of a tenor voice. His technique is pretty much dumped larynx open throat hence the deeper dsound and max projection of the voice, He is atypical tenor, not a baritone
