    I'm glad this year monohulls returned, for 2 very different reasons, but equally valid: first of all, I don't mind if the previous ones were something like super flying boats or something...they are not reliable, they make competitors risk to lose their life (far too much more than monohulls), and if those deadly boats kept going into competition, what happened some years ago would not remain the single tragic event, it is not acceptable that a person dies so easily during a worldwide live broadcasting transmission and at "2 steps" from the beach. Second...these monohull boats can "fly" for a little while above the sea surface, though consistent parts usually remain firmly in the water, I think it's acceptable...but about those monsters of some years ago, some people say "Wow! Super machines boats, the best!", but tell me, if a multihull boat can fly so high from the sea surface and even for quite a while...what is there about "sail boat" in it? They are not even sail boats, they are rather a primitive version of seaplanes or ecological seaplanes. At this point America's Cup would not be a Sail Boat competition anymore, because if it is a "BOAT" it IS SUPPOSED to navigate on the sea surface (at least a sufficiently consistent part of a boat), otherwise is not boat anymore, you are not supposed to trascend the nature and meaning of a boat if you want to organize a competition between boats.

  • @DirtyDdddddddddddddd
    @DirtyDdddddddddddddd3 жыл бұрын

    Interestingly the Italians wanted a monohull, and the NZers a high performance boat (aka foils)... looks like the kiwis won that one! Once you have a boat foiling, it doesn’t really matter what the platform ontop is from a nautical perspective (aerodynamics aside). I actually think these things are closer to foiling trimarans than monohulls. Although maybe not Ineos UK 😉

    You make a good point. While these AC75's are quite spectacular, personally I think they would have been better off keeping with the foiling cats. Similarly fast, much cheaper to build (I assume), and the racing would probably be a lot closer. There would likely be 3 or 4 more teams competing as well. Hopefully we'll see some better racing when things start up again next month.

    How is the depth and attitude of the foils being determined and maintained. Is it a combination of transducer for hull height and attitude indicators then being dealt with in computation with the results being used to control the flaps (ailerons) on the foil. I am working on my own design for a much smaller boat and believe this is what I would do. I also know of a way to reduce the drag of the in water foil at high speed. It would be to pump air through a perforated skin at the leading edge of the foil giving a very small turbulent boundary layer, and most likely reducing the control issues that occur as the foil exceeds around 55 kis.

  • @slooob23

    @slooob23

    50 knots seems to be some what of a speed limit for boats like this that need an "all round" foil design to cover the wind range they sail in. To go faster would require a high speed set of smaller foils sailed in 20+ knots of breeze would be my guess. It would be interesting to see what one of these things could do with strictly high speed set up on foils and rig.

    This answer ^^^^ is 100% incorrect. The trimming of the foils is computer driven, that happens in response to speeds, angle of attack, sea state and input from the sailors. There isn’t a human alive that could trim these boats as swiftly and effectively as the computer systems they have aboard. If it was left to humans they’d be off foil in seconds and sat in the water. The grinders provide power for the systems aboard, they no longer power winches, they power batteries / hydraulics that are then used to move foils, move sails and power the boat. Watch a race from the camera at the rear of the boat and watch how the mainsail moves, it’s not a human that’s moving it, it’s the onboard systems that are responding to a combination of human and computer input for the perfect sail shape. These boats are sailing right on the limit of what the foils and rudders can manage, that’s the idea of racing! Several times during the races the teams indicated that they would be reprogramming and improving their computer systems aboard the AC75s. The following paragraph is taken from Yachts International.... Unlike the catamarans, the AC75s have computer-adjustable flaps on the foils, run by a complex system of electronics and hydraulics, custom designed by each syndicate. Depending on wind and wave conditions, these systems will be tuned on the day to deliver various increments of adjustment and response speeds. If the mechatronics engineers do their jobs well, no one will notice. If they get it wrong or their systems fail, or if the weather team gets it wrong, then the boat will be slow, fail to foil smoothly or splash down.

    @@vernonbear The sails are human powered. The foils are battery powered. The type of computer controls NZ had in the last cup are now outlawed. The current boats seem to be human controlled with much computer assistance. There is vast amounts of data involved. I would love to hear if the current teams are skirting the regulations like NZ did in the last cup (quite creatively I might add). Good racers have always push the limits of the rules.

    One comment here has this “monohull” faster, particularly upwind, than last time’s foiling cats, and attributes that to the supposedly more aerodynamic shape of the monohull. But is that really true? It would appear that the cross-sectional area of the cats is no larger since each hull is considerably small than the AC75. I also seem to remember 50 knot speeds with the cats. Bottom line, again my opinion, is that the monohull looks an awful lot like a trimaran without a hull above the foil that is in use.

    A couple of points Point 1. Why is the Americas Cup adapting to try and attract new/ younger/ non-sailing fans? It's not being run to make profit, it's purely a d*** swinging contest of the richest men in the world. Which is what it's always been and this is fine. The new foiling boats that are so far removed from normal sailing and provide no entertainment for normal sailing fans. Look at cricket- it's a slow, tactical and methodical sport. Some would say boring at first glance. When you start noticing the nuances and become invested in the tactics this is when it becomes addictive. This is what the AC has lost. AC36 has become the sailing equivalent of a longest slog or fastest bowled delivery competition. Point 2. The AC should be the pinnacle of match racing, and potentially sailing. The world match racing tour used to be a breeding ground for AC sailors. The AC has decimated match racing at all levels including world and national levels and no actual match racers progress to the AC. In conclusion, I'd love to see someone that actually loved sailing design the rules. Let's not get stuck between being the T20 or rugby 7s of sailing and the pinnacle of sailing. Sail GP can provide this 'festival' style entertainment. The America's Cup should be a match racing competition firstly, with design a close second. The match racing component is extremely far down the agenda for AC36.

    The boats are so difficult to get onto foil at wind speeds below 12 knots that if a boat falls off in those conditions they automatically lose the race.
