"We have learned that Dickey passed away peacefully at 3:45 AM this morning. He was surrounded by his loved ones. Dickey lived a fascinating life and created incredible music that was the soundtrack for so many lives. His legacy will live on forever but the world has lost another genius. Please keep his family in your prayers. "

Looking back, my grandpa wasn't very responsible. He would buy me donuts and sugary cereal and let me stay up late. We would ride around in his old Chevy truck and he would roll the windows down to smoke. Hardly even talking, just riding around listening to his CDs, my favorite being this one. My parents stopped letting me see him when they found out. He died of lung cancer a few years ago and I just wish I could ride around 1 more time

I’ll always remember his interview where he told the story of writing Rambling Man. He was a young song writer, just getting by. He sub-letted a studio apartment from an old family friend in Macon, who was giving him a deal. He came home one night and the landlord was doing some yardwork, looked up at him asking Dicky how you getting along? Dickey told him of some songs he was excited about that were getting published, and the old man quipped, “that’s you, Dickey, just writing your songs, trying to make a living and doing the best you can.” He said those words really stuck with him and he knew there was a potentially great song in his old landlord’s words.

@gille2k not meaning it as a genre but the fact the Allman's are from TN, Dickey and Butch are from FL, and Jaimoe is from MS...well, they're all southern boys and it's a rock band. Berry is the lone yankee, being from Chicago.

One of THE greatest American songs in the history of recorded music.3:00 is the first magic moment in this song - and then the all time magic is at 3:44 where DIckey takes the melody into the stratosphere.....for me its one of the greatest moments in music. RIP Dickey

I remember parking at a Walmart, and this homeless guy on the sidewalk heard it and started singing along. So me and some random homeless guy were essentially karaokeing while people drove by. Weird times, good times. I will remember Wyatt till the day I die.

I still remember recording off the radio onto a cassette tape. Not the best quality but it "fit" on that primitive playlist. Later I direct recorded off of vinyl. But somehow that crude recording was the one that my brain pan resonates with. LOVE this SONG!

From the first time I listened to this tune, I was hooked! I put a blank cassette in my boombox and waited, and waited, and waited for it to be played. The station it was played on didn’t have a request hotline and I was usually at school when it was on. Finally around 11 p.m. on an August evening I heard it and pressed down on the record button! Rest in Peace to Mr. Dickey Betts! Condolences to his family and friends. 😔💐
