I want to add one point many video watchers may not know. Because Laos was heavily bombed and mined during the Veitnam War -n becoming the most intensively bombed territory in history - it has struggled with the consequences for decades with many Laotians killed or maimed bu undiscovered mines. This has made travel and economic development difficult. When building this train, the entire path had to be surveyed for bombs and mines, and thousands were cleared. So this train not only provides a developing country modern transit they lacked, but also a safe means to travel without fear of injury. I hope viewers can read my comment and understand what this train means to Laotian people - safety & progress they long deserved. Thank you for reading.

Among the ASEAN countries, Laos is the least developed with a landlocked mountainous landscape, especially in the northern part. But now it is connected by HSR to the south of China and eventually, Ventien can be the HSR hub for the other ASEAN neighboring countries with a bright future

I have taken the train from Bangkok to Vientiane - as you say, the last bit was all a bit silly but the linking with the new train will no doubt explain the rather unfinished arrangements which I experienced - about 5 years ago. When I found that the transfer from Vientiane to Luang Prabang would be 10+ hours on a bus, I flew. I also took a train from Bangkok towards Cambodia - to the border which is (or was?) a walking border. Walking with suitcases, plus handcarts etc. Amazing amounts of fresh produce going from Cambodia to Thailand. At another time I took the "International Express" from Bangkok to Butterworth. Dont confuse with the Oriental Express which is very deluxe and very expensive. My train was international, but it was a stretch to call it "express".I suspect the amazing set of characters doing this journey was more interesting than the blue rinses on the Oriental Express.

However, the 2019 commencement was delayed into 2020 & then Covid hit. 6 months ago SRT announced should start a cross border service in 2024, currently waiting for the Cambodians to finalise some arrangements.

You are assigned a seat number when you buy a ticket and you must stick to your own seat that you bought. This restriction is to reduce conflict and fighting on the train. If you only use other seats for a few minutes, none will bother you.

The toilets on the classic streamlined cars Amtrak inherited from the privately operated railroads dumped on the tracks. Disregarding rules imposed by the pre-Amtrak railroads restrooms toilets were not locked while trains were standing in the station so waste was dumped on station tracks while passengers boarded and detrained...until the 80's when a train crossing a bridge in Florida dumped on fishermen in a boat below. The state of Florida gave Amtrak a deadline to install retention toilets or stop operating the highly popular Florida runs.

I think some of the overly officious rules are due to the fact that they've never had this level of infrastructure before and are coming to terms with how to manage it. It's like driving a brand new car and being very cautious and not having people eat inside 😄 Hopefully the inefficiences are ironed out over time, and prices made more reasonable for the average person. @@NonstopEurotripWouldn't be surprised if the US and Europe started doing airport-type security checks for the most important stations, particularly if we get a couple of attacks. Already Americans are highly dependent on cars. They can really abandon rail if they fear for their safety

@@oceanwave4502 this is a train.. how does a hijacker steer a train high into a tower? You know since 9/11, fighter jets are trained to meet hijacked/errant planes

People should know some facts before criticizing. This is not a High-Speed Railway line. It is designed to be a single railway track mainly for freight trains, mixed with passenger trains. If the market changes, a second track may be added to improve efficiency; but it is highly unlikely to be a passenger-train-only railway. freight transportation will always be the primary business. Seating on someone's own seat is a requirement because each seat has different advantages. You are assigned a seat number when you buy a ticket and you must stick to your own seat that you bought. This restriction is to reduce conflict and fighting on the train.

Half the seats face forwards and half face backwards - unlike a Shinkansen where they all face the direction of travel. But at 6:22 you can see a foot pedal in the seat base which looks the same as the foot pedal on a Shinkansen seat that will make the seats rotate. So it looks like the seats can rotate but they can't be bothered to reset them at the end of the line and just leave half facing forward and half facing backwards!

A good video very informative. Beautiful and relaxing environment all the way. Lao is a poorest country and most undereducated people in Asia. I understand the crazy rules and law. However, the people and culture are the most friendly. Do not compare with your country, open mind and go along, you will enjoy and understand other culture and attitude. Otherwise, you spoil yourself the fun and friendships. I can live in the trains travel around the world.
