Definitely do more mini PCs with Oculink. The Oculink really sells these things being able to upgrade later on, like a regular PC, but with a smaller footprint and lower power consumption.

Every PC with a port that can have external video cards, should be tested by the KZreadr. It's part of the PC. It should be tested to show what it offers for that PC. An assumption that it will "just work" is just that, an assumption.

@@freedomisdead9638 Do it! I have the Minis with a 7900XT eGPU and it's awesome. I wouldn't get a higher GPU than the 7900XT or the Nvidia equivalent, you're limited by the 4x bus and the mobile CPU having only 16GB of L3 cache vs a desktop PC that would have a 16x slot and at least 32MB of L2 (or a lot more if it's X3D). I had a 6800XT in it before getting the 7900, and with some games there's no difference, like Far Cry 6 for example got exactly the same FPS, whereas on a desktop PC it would be MUCH faster with the 7900XT. Starfield got a massive boost though.

Another awesome video.👍 Love this channel and mini-PC coverage. 4:21 -- great bird's eye view of Mobo . . . (1) helpful to see the 3x M-keyed slots and their corresponding 80mm tiedown screws; (2) *REALLY COOL* E-keyed daughter board with the Oculink; (3) wish you had unscrewed those 4x brass standoffs and pulled out the entire Mobo to show us the CPU fan & cooling parts (and the LAN IC printed specification whether Intel SLNMH [for i-225V] or SRKTV [226]); and lastly (4) in my dream scenario, you also took apart m.2 SSD aluminum cooler and showed its fan (whether being a plain 40x40, a blower, or anything else). 6400 MHz ram . . . impressive. Kindest regards, neighbours and friends.

This seriously impressive even if you exclude the Oculink option. It also has USB3.2 Gen 2 across all ports (not mentioned in the video) and HDMI 2.1 is also a bonus. Then you have the price, which when compared to many other devices reviewed costing much more, on the surface, this does look pretty good to give you an all round performer now and with enough versatility not to feel as though you are being left behind when the next CPU comes along in just a few weeks/months.

A head to head with the Minisforum UM780XTX would be awesome. Specs and performance numbers don't tell the whole story - other aspects like noise also matter. In a lot of ways this looks better on paper, but I know from owning one that the Minisforum is very easy to live with, not loud or hot even with the TDP pumped up to 70w in the BIOS, etc. It would be nice to see them head to head and compare all this stuff.

Interesting little box. It does bug me its using LP DDR5 instead of SODIMM, but as they do have a 32gb model I guess most users will have plenty of ram for normal desktop apps and gaming and the higher speed is a plus especially for the igpu performance. I'd still choose a Minisforum over this tho if you can find some 6400 Sodimm modules. Plus you can get up to 64Gb ram and it also supports oculink. I havn't really thaught of external gpu's being especially interesting, but this teased me a bit dependent how expensive those 7600 models coma at which should be a very reasonable gpu for up to 1440p. Still en external GPU will add more clutter if you just like the small form factor that fits on any disk, you might as well go for a small mini itx buid that fits a normal 7600-7800 gpu

I'd have to set up these SSD only PCs to operate from an external drive over USB 3.x so that I can use my hard drives. Or get a full ATX chassis with room for fifteen or more 3.5 inch & 5.25 inch drives, use M.2 adapters with 5 SATA 3 ports per card to give myself thirteen 20+ TB drives with two 4K Blu-ray burners. Then a power supply to handle the load for the drives alone. Two power supplies really. One for the little PC. The other for the vastly more useful HDDs and ODDs.

I've seen that comment, but not sure how anyone comes to that conclusion - it's a PCIe gen 4 x4 slot - 64Gbps is the spec. For this to be the case, the Minisforum would have to be performing at less than spec. Mine reads PCIe 4.0 x4 in GPU-Z and the SSD (I bought mine barebones and put a fast SSD in, not the cheap one they come with) performs exceptionally well in the other M.2 slot, so their bus seems to be fine.

Did you overclock the ram in the bios, AOOSTAR claims it will go up to 7500Mhz, they also claim default wattage is 35w but you can increase it to 54w in the BIOS. You should also review games with the same settings Mini PC to Mini PC, that way we can compare apples to apples instead of us having to compare apples to a loch ness monster. While I'm ranting, we also don't need an EGPU mini review inside a Mini PC review, the EGPU will perform the same as the UM780 XTX since it has the same CPU (unless the CPU thermal throttles, but since you never mentioned the thermals I'm assume it didn't)

Similarly spec'd to the Elite Mini UM780 XTX but with improved IO, more M.2 support and faster RAM. However, this AOOSTAR costs 200-300 more for very similar system and GPU performance. And even with slower RAM, the Ryzen 7 7840HS in the Elite Mini UM780 XTX outperforms the same CPU in this AOOSTAR system. Can check it out. The Oculink not using up an M.2 port is nice though.

I think the main downside of Oculink is that it is an internal connector rated for only a few hundred insertions. Oculink is great if you are building something that you only plan to unplug once every few weeks/months, but not multiple times per week, this is where i would choose USB-4/thunderbolt, or maybe think about getting something with built in dedicated GPU.

    Better than the Minisforum EM780?

  • @berlin36moto

Yes. I have both, but the minisforum is still smaller (i think half the volume). I have the em680 but the Problems most likely are the same: It is quiet and very efficient, but it has half the power. The em780 should not be that different. When you plug in all the USB ports for example, mouse, keyboard, ethernet adapter and then connect a external nvme case, the mouse and keyboard stop working. I think it struggles to provide power to each port even if all single users are below 5W all together it does not work somehow. The whole machine runs at 65W (that is fixed by PD) the two USB4 alone provide at least 15w each, add 3 USB3 (5W min), SD card slot (5W) etc. It just does not add up. I bought a 100w PD charger, but the Problem remains.

Now THIS is what I've been waiting for. This ticks pretty much all the boxes. One minor gripe though. It would have been better to put the Occulink port at the back IMO. If you'll be using it on a nice clean desk setup having as many cords hidden as possible is the goal. This setup would be great for a casual gamer like myself. Thanks for the review!! 👍😎

Faster ram? LPDDR5 is slower than DDR5. 5600 ddr5 would be better. At the very least should have gone lpddr5 7500 ie the max it officially supports.
