The Alchemy of Happiness by Al Ghazzali

The Alchemy of Happiness was written by Abū Ḥāmid Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ghazālī, a Persian theologian, philosopher, and prolific Sunni author regarded as one of the greatest systematic Persian thinkers of Islam. During the time before it was written the Muslim world was considered to be in a state of political as well as intellectual unrest. Al-Ghazālī, noted that there were constant disputes regarding the role of philosophy and scholastic theology, and that Sufi's became chastised for their neglect of the ritual obligations of Islam. Upon its release, The Alchemy of Happiness allowed al-Ghazali to considerably reduce the tensions between the scholars and mystics. Al Ghazzali emphasized the importance of observing the ritual requirements of Islam, the actions that would lead to salvation, and avoidance of sin. The factor that set the Alchemy of Happiness apart from other theological works at the time was its mystical emphasis on self-discipline and asceticism.

Always fascinated by Al-Ghazali (the purifier or destroyer of old Islam) but never inclined to read nor hear his actual words. Thanx for the opportunity. I cannot go with him much at all. He was too rigid and non-adaptive in traditional conservatism and too mystical for a pragmatist like me. Yet, this discourse on happiness has universal truth in it if you pare away the baggage of self-absorbed and self-righteousness partisan true belief.

Al Ghazali wasn't Sufi or at least not in the same vein as you would understand the present day Sufism. It's very important for people to understand where he is coming from. He had a very complicated understanding of the things. He dedicated the later part of his life to resolve the various philosophical tensions and came up with a way of dealing with life, understanding ones being and the God.

@@letsomethingshine Well, what makes you think that any religion is asserting that it has RATIONAL, LOGICAL AND SCIENTIFIC proof for the existence of GOD. In fact, the god in every religion, right from the proto-religions of stone age was deliberately imagined to be unscientific. In fact, whatever was mysterious to humans was imagined to be god. The thunder gods were common when human explanation didn't touch the phenomena of lightening. The sun god was common when human knowledge fell short of explaining the daily visits of sun. Nobody imagined a wheel to be god. Nor did any culture imagine clothes to be god. There has been no god in human history which was bound by know n knowledge of science at that time. Basically the god was always placed where science stops. And what would a god, whose existence can be proven mean? Then you already have gods. Mass and energy is god. Everything is made up of matter and energy. Time is god, for everything exists in time. Space is god, for everything exists in space. A god proven by reason, is by definition limited by same laws that limit human. So, any god, worthy of human attention has to be by definition above laws of logic and physics. Cannot be proven. Can never be proven. The epitome of human existence is in our capacity to search for truth, unless we accept us as being similar to animals. If we are just another animal, well why not to just release a gas that makes every human to fall asleep and sleep permanently, because what is then the point of so much misery from mere existence. God is experiential, As al ghazali is saying, you don't find god by putting things under more and more powerful microscopes. You find god by putting your existence under microscope. The god hypothesis, is a valid hypothesis, albeit subjective. If you believe music is a thing, comedy is a thing, beauty is a thing, mental pain is a thing, happiness is a thing, boredom is a thing, even when science tells you that sound is just waves in air, all beautiful and ugly things are just different arrangements of 3 primary colors. And science tells you that things have mass, size, position, energy etc but nothing called beauty. And there is nothing like happiness and misery, it is all different concentration of different chemicals in your body. In fact having such scientific explanations for all of these things, still we maintain these experiences are things in themselves which science simply doesn't see. In same sense, ALLAH exists and makes perfect sense for people who are blessed with it. It is music for someone and compressional sound waves for other. Its happiness for someone and higher concentration of dopamine for someone. It is beauty for someone and just 3 primary colors for someone. IT IS GOD FOR SOMEONE AND JUST INANIMATE UNIVERSE FOR SOMEONE.

These poisonous/manipulative opinions from mentally beaten Ghazali (who calls others fools without any introspection or self-awareness because he is the fool with shame to hide) sound like propaganda because he does not allow deeper thoughtful discourse and does not invite any debate because of his fear of the truth that may contradict that which he merely wishes to be true without trying to better it. It is a bit like the Christian Saint Aquinas, all of these are corrupted rich individuals desperate to fit in to the uncontrolled but controllable (with some effortful manipulation) societies growing like a plague around them due to general dissatisfaction increasing population growth rates of those dissociating from reality in order to continue moving as cogs in a corrupt society (thanks to the rich wanting themselves and their families to stay rich and become richer against all others in their community).

@Bashart Ali Many of the best of people much more prefer others. For example, Aristotle and Socrates and Diogenes and Zhuangzi and Voltaire and many more. The self-contradictory and obviously false blood-thirsty religions of the vain Abrahamics are not even favored except by those who tell themselves that they need such tyrannical barbarity to be true. Even rejecting the essence or most details given by the pro-Abrahamic mystic philosophers making way for the hardened and ignorant bibliolaters to step in and take power which they use to hurt others out of their fear and insecurity. Even though it is a well-founded insecurity, given that they themselves deep in their own hearts understand that their society's Abrahamic religions are false and as such they often doubt any number of aspects of the believes that are stamped by the societies around them. Yet not even the heart can doubt true science that stands aside and much beyond the false religion/heart, and for science (as with anything real) only the mind and action can test it in order to demonstrate it or falsify it. The true heart, and the true emotion, is thus empirical. Objective truth thus stands both within and outside and beyond any imagined deities, including any pathetic robot slave like Azrael is largely arbitrarily portrayed as in the pictures painted by merely and obviously human words.
