That Iron Maiden quote "Facing the sun as they went to their graves..... to stand with the Cathars and to die and be free" from the song Montsegur straight up gave me chills. It was my favorite song from Dance of Death - so much so that I wrote an entire research paper and got obsessed over the Cathars because of it. It is well known that Bruce Dickinson, vocalist for Maiden, is a huge history buff, originally graduating from college with a degree in history (before becoming one of the worlds biggest rockstars, of course). Because of Maiden, I'm myself FASCINATED by history, from the dogfights of WWII to the conquest of Alexander the Great - and because of them I continue this obsession with all of Simon's channels. This intro has officially thrown me full circle!

"Innocent was also a zealous protector of the true Faith and a strenuous opponent of heresy. His chief activity was turned against the Albigenses who had become so numerous and aggressive that they were no longer satisfied with being adherents of heretical doctrines but even endeavoured to spread their heresy by force. They were especially numerous in a few cities of Northern and in Southern France. During the first year of his pontificate Innocent sent the two Cistercian monks Rainer and Guido to the Albigenses in France to preach to them the true Faith and dispute with them on controverted topics of religion. The two Cistercian missionaries were soon followed by Diego, Bishop of Osma, then by St. Dominic and the two papal legates. Peter of Castelnau and Raoul. When, however, these peaceful missionaries were ridiculed and despised by the Albigenses, and the papal legate Castelnau was assassinated in 1208, Innocent resorted to force. He ordered the bishops of Southern France to put under interdict the participants in the murder and all the towns that gave shelter to them. He was especially incensed against Count Raymond of Toulouse who had previously been excommunicated by the murdered legate and whom, for good reasons, the pope suspected as the instigator of the murder. The count protested his innocence and submitted to the pope, probably out of cowardice, but the pope placed no further trust in him. He called upon France to raise an army for the suppression of the Albigenses. Under the leadership of Simon of Montfort a cruel campaign ensued against the Albigenses which, despite the protest of Innocent, soon turned into a war of conquest. The culminating point in the glorious reign of Innocent was his convocation of the Fourth Lateran Council, which he solemnly opened on 15 November, 1215. It was by far the most important council of the Middle Ages. Besides deciding on a general crusade to the Holy Land, it issued seventy reformatory decrees, the first of which was a creed (Firmiter credimus), against the Albigenses and Waldenses, in which the term "transubstantiation" received its first ecclesiastical sanction." www.newadvent.org/cathen/08013a.htm

@@austinduff6493 The Albigensian Crusade as a whole is fairly hazy in many senses. It’s of course not as widely known as the Third Crusade (as is the case with other crusades) and there is some conjecture over whether the Cathars ever actually existed as no documentation that can be sourced back to them are extant. This obviously impedes the effort to offer a holistic account at times but that’s a fairly constant issue when looking at periods of medieval history. Despite this, the video is successful in offering an objective record of events and is far more objective than it could have been when you consider that this event is just one entry into a long military tradition of what we by today’s standards would deem attempted genocide, sanctioned by the papacy (see also the Wendish Crusade of 1147 for another example).

Ever since I heard the song Cathar Rhythm by Era in my childhood I have been fascinated by the cathars' story. The CD booklet contained a short poem about that last Cathar stronghold which has been doing it's rounds in my mind from time to time ever since: When the children of Montsegur came down from the pog The sun had not yet returned day to the world On their pale faces could be seen their grief and sadness Without faith they went. Time had passed, the children have grown with great hope And sometimes, when they look up to the mountains They can hear those strong and beautiful voices Beating on the sound of a rhythm, the Cathar rhythm. Thank you so much for this Video!

@@rafaelwilks Paulo Coelho's saying that "The world is changed by your example, not your opinion" was exemplified by the Cathars. Though the Church characteristically obsessed about their beliefs and denounced them as "heretical", it was the Cathar way of life, not their doctrine that attracted people: living examples of people who sought to sincerely follow the teachings of Jesus. As a result, no matter how many doctrinal points the Dominicans a scored in public debates, it had little impact on the strength of 'Cathars' (locally known as 'the good Christians' / 'good men' / 'good women'). Even their opponents could not fault the lives of the 'parfaits'.

It may well be the case that the Franciscans were licensed precisely because of their simple lifestyle, in contrast to the local clergy of Languedoc. Innocent III famously said of one of them, "The Archbishop of Narbonne knows no other God than money, his heart is a bank.” Of the Cathars themselves, one Catholic knight, explaining why he didn't expel 'Cathars' from his lands, said, “We have been brought up side by side with them. Our closest kinsmen are numbered among them. Every day we see them living worthy and honourable lives in our midst.” The "good Christians" were precisely that, persecuted by a Church that would admit no other path to Jesus than its own.

At 3:15 Simon said the Pope "described [the Cathars] as 'little foxes which are ruining the vineyard of the Lord'". The Pope was quoting Song of Solomon 2: 15, which is...a passage that--how do I explain this? It is about removing distractions during intercourse by "going down". It is an extremely weird passage for the Pope to use to describe heretics. Simon, what was the source for the that quote?

It's a footnote within a footnote...and let me add as a Catholic "Burn the Heretics!".😆 Seriously though Jesus preached love and non- violence, and it's amazing how early Catholics were willing to kill each other over minor issues for religious dogma. Right before my dad passed away he said he was felt he was Agnostic. Fair enough i'm not going to kill and pillage my neighbors because you slightly believe something else than what i was taught. I've gone off on a tangent and i apologize.

"... In the Dominican preaching three qualities shine forth: great solidity of doctrine, the fulness of fidelity towards the Apostolic See, piety towards the Virgin Mother. For although Dominic felt himself mature for preaching, yet he did not undertake that office until he had worked hard in the Palentine Athenaeum of philosophy and theology. Long familiar with the Fathers, under their guidance and teaching, he first, as it were, received into his blood and marrow the riches of Sacred Scripture, and especially of Paul. The value of this knowledge of Divine things not long after was to be seen in his disputations against the heretics. They were armed with all arts and fallacies to attack the dogmas of Faith; yet with wonderful success he confounded and refuted them. This appeared especially at Toulouse, the head and center of the heresies, where the most learned of the adversaries had come together. It is recorded that he, with his first companions, powerful in word and work, invincibly withstood the insolence of the heretics. Indeed, not only did he withstand their strength, but he so softened their spirits by his eloquence and charity that he recalled an immense number to the bosom of the Church. Tracing family back, and hearing why many came to North America, to settle and trade in Nova Scotia, because they wanted to escape the wars of Europe, this punctuates the plunder of neighbors perfectly. Could well explain why my ancestors chose, and were successful in integrating a culture with the Mackinac. Judging from these aspects, I would fancy that the comment of my Grandfather of the French line, that there was Nobility on his side of the family, that we were of the Merovingians. Carolingians would have reason to stay and maneuver for position and rank, plundering neighbors. Merovingians, especially after the Albigensian Crusade, would see great reason to not stay. The order of Innocence III is supreme arrogance. The fact that he could order this fratricide and plunder, while also keeping the HOLY SCRIPTURES from general possession and study, is entrapment under ignorantia juris non excusat. Nobody is 100% on understanding SCRIPTURES completely even if they possess them, we are but men. But to withhold them and then judge death upon people that you are actively and intentionally keeping in superstition and ignorance is supreme malevolence. To HELL with him. Makes my blood boil, that nature of the people I am from, the people who taught the Indians how to scalp. Innocence! Proves business has always been the same. Envy, Jealousy, Greed, Murder, Lies, and Megalomania. They even adopt Titles as if they are Titles to Marxist Legislation, that are completely opposite to what deeds that they achieve.
