The Alberta Sovereignty Act

One of the defining features of the ongoing UCP leadership race has been the proposal of an Alberta Sovereignty Act, which would purport to empower the Alberta government to derogate from certain federal laws or court rulings. This session explores the legal and political implications of this proposal and seeks to understand its emergence in light of Alberta’s political culture, the recent history of intergovernmental relations in Canada, and the global rise of populism.
