What would you rather have, a general AI that is alligned with western liberal democratic values or chinese general AI that is alligned with their style of governance? When I look at China and I see an oppressive social credit system where people are being shamed for their financial status, the treatment of Uyghurs and torture of political dissidents, I know what side I want to win.

this was an interesting conversation, thanks ,, but it's been striking to me how there's basically zero discussion of foom risk, of hard takeoff ,, everyone just seems to be assuming that the LLM training trajectory is the fastest one available, but uh, what if it's not, then it could be either the US or China that fooms unpredictably or it could come from anywhere :/

I came to hear about AI. Instead I receive a series of political polemics and assumptions about China, especially the panel's presumed knowledge of the mind and intentions of Xi. In short, a series of western political statements parading the usual tropes about China.

They even start off saying "China has gone from a Silicon Valley copycat...", not understanding that China is STILL just a copycat. Worse, they're passing off open-source models and even smuggled Intel chips as their own national products.

This is very clearly a neutral video about AI developments in China and US, so it is about AI, but perhaps the title should be a bit clearer. Helen lived and studied in China for majority of her life while Wong is direct representitve of China.

How is talking about some "China" or "United States" as actors in this game not truly weird? These are certainly places where stuff happens, but that these are countries which act is surely a notion that needs some circumspection. Slightly obliquely to this, there seems to me to be a very odd bias in the way these people -- like perhaps most commentators -- assume that actions normally have the results desired by the actors. When countries are the actors involved, this seems to me a very dubious thing to assume. The 180-degrees polar opposite seems to me much more plausible.

@2:22 "It requires a huge amount of comp..." and then he switches up the conversation. My guy was going to say computing power and then realised the big give away and blunder he was going to make. These computers use unbelievable amounts of power, energy and water which is damaging an already disastrous environment. Innovation at any cost will be the demise of humans and we are watching it in real time

The biggest difference between human intelligence and AI is, creativity... Even when a specific machine has the so-called learning capabilities, it is still doing what it is programmed to do. Creativity requires a mental spark, putting what is available to come up with a new solution....In fact, the sparks in a thunderstorm do create amino acids, the fundamental building blocks of life. For computers, even if they have neural networks, they are different from human brains. That is what is going on right now, it could change in in future.
