The Ages & Periods of English History: Victorian, Tudor, Edwardian, Elizabethan...

Do you know the difference between "Elizabethan" and "Victorian"? Have you noticed how many English or British kings were called Edward, or George, or Henry? In this lesson I’ll give a summary of hundreds of years of English and British history. We’ll talk about some of the labels used for the different periods, and some of the kings and queens - including a short period when we didn’t have a monarch at all! If you’ve heard names like Tudor, Edwardian, Restoration, Victorian, and Elizabethan, but not been quite sure exactly what they mean, this lesson is for you. These names are useful to know if you’re studying anything historical, including literature, architecture, works of art, and music. After the lesson, test your knowledge with the quiz! www.engvid.com/the-ages-perio...

Dear Ma'am Gill, In this video,we learn a lot about the history of English literature ! Whenever we deal with history,we have to remember so many dates.l had mediaeval history as a subject way back during my graduation and my father's uncle had been a professor of history. Therefore, while under his tutelage and later in life too he was very proficient in remembering the dates and the sequences of history. I have the Canterbury tales by Geoffrey Chaucer with me.The whole book is in a form of long poetry which at times is difficult to understand. But being a professor of English literature, you can surely go through the book with an effortless ease ! The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare is one of the most fascinating plays which i still love to read ! Thank you so much,Ma'am ! 😃

Fantastic video, Gill. And it's always very touching to see you getting emotive, like in the videos of poems. I didn't know a lot of stuff you've talked about, I like history very much. In fact, at last I'm not reading Jane Eyre but a book about australian history hehehe as I see it was first colonized in the georgian period. It's very useful to get a look at those kind of basic schemes, they serve to order the past time, very amusing. English history it's so complicated... well, I can't think it outside the story of the brittish colonies, then indeed it's complicated. Cheers and thanks. :)

Thank you - old Brit here - and even now I'm still learning things I had forgotten or never knew ! It's a great way to introduce new people to a start on this subject, because we all know it's way more complicated, but generally you only get thrown into too much information & so much so that many people get bored & can't take it all in, and some never go back & learn more. I'm particularly interested in the immediate post Roman period tho - so little information on that era, i guess largely because so few people were literate at the time. But I believe it is slowly leaking out by listening to the tales of the period by later reporting from the early middle ages. We may never know it well enough, but I do think it was way more interesting than the history as chronicled by the Norman invaders - those who win the battles can write the story to suit themselves after all ! There are graves from the 500/600's that were obviously the leaders of the time, no grave goods to tell us much, but I am still hoping for more information of a King Arthur (2 of them actually ! ) that were the actual leaders of the Brits of the Western areas of the islands & more information of those indigenous peoples rather than the Normans who pushed them out, took over the lands & gradually intermarried with them & British history was then as they wished it to be told ! What a weonderful subject. Thnak you so much for your really great overview - very helpful & well done !
