I love the "1930s" sound quality. It's like sitting down on a rainy afternoon and watching this movie on your old black and white set. Simply marvelous!

This score is not only hugely influential and technically breath-taking, it provides an incredible emotional element to the film.

Oooooh!!!!! I am 16 years old and I am and have been in love with Errol Flynn since I was a little girl. I have grown up watching Robin Hood, it is one of mine and my moms favorite Errol Flynn movies.

This is my all time favorite movie. The actors and actresses were perfect for their roles and this soundtrack was the glue that held it all together. And when you consider that it was made in the late 1930s, it is a work of genius. Today's high tech cannot compare with it. And the castle love scene between Robin and Marian is the most romantic scene Hollywood did.

This is my all time favorite movie also. I remember being taken to see this film as a child of 5 and the following Xmas got the special book from the film for a Christmas present, As I grew older I saw it a few times on T.V and became an even bigger fan wanting to know where and when it was filmed I knew every actor in the main parts down to UNA O connor . When Video came out I searched high and low for it and managed to by a copy someone had made and still have it. I remember getting the DVD and running it through with the directors dubbing of all the film locations many which are now gone , On growing up was surprised to see IAn Hunter who played King Richard appearing in lots of small parts in films i wouldnt expect to see an actor of his stature in such as the captain of the ship in The Bulldog Breed which must have been quite a come down for him

The scene where Marian finally admits her feelings about Robin and kisses him is one of the funniest romance scenes I've ever watched. Morbid humor mixed with affection and nervousness = classic moment.

I saw this (again) at the L.A. County Museum on the big screen, and it was breathtaking.

Best version of Englands Robin Hood, it has everything the remakes will never achieve .

Remember it takes a legend (Errol Flynn) to play a legend!!!

I hope Mr Korngold knew how beloved he was for his genius. I think the films remain legendary because of his brilliant musical scores. He lives on through these glorious and illuminating pieces. I listen and can envision the movie! His scores are so powerful. Thank you for this special auditory treat. His classical pieces and operas are stupendous as well.

Such a great soundtrack! No wonder Mr. Korngold won an academy award for it.

Even with all the changes in special effects, etc, I still consider this as one of the best movies of our time.

This an incredible production🤩 No matter how often I watch this movie, it never gets boring. The soundtrack is glorious, relaying the age-old story of henchmen and heroes.

Great repartee

This movie is a make-shift tradition in my house. My late grandmother (my father's mother) loved this movie & when my dad was kid, he would watch it with her & when I was a kid, I would sometimes find myself watching it with my grandmother if it was on TV. I hope to carry the tradition on with my kids/kid, one day--if I have any, that is...

One of my favourite scenes is the sword fight between Robin and the Sheriff. Basil Rathbone could really fence and did not require a stand-in

We had 3 local stations where I grew up in the late 50's & 60's (only one of which came in clearly) and every now and again they'd play old classics like this on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when the networks weren't offering anything the local stations wanted to bother with...One of my most vivid childhood memories is when he splits the arrow in the archery contest; I must've been 8 or 9 and I still remember how that great scene thrilled me...in black and white...I didn't see the beautiful color version until 30 or more years later (one of the first films to really get it right using the new color technology - as good as anything today)...It is a wonderful film, but just one of many fantastic productions from that era

Korngold was a music genius even as a child. He composed opera too!

A lot of the music the Korngold wrote for this movie was for an opera they he had only part written and for some reason abandoned. Another but of Trivia about this movie is that James Cagney was originally slated to play Robin, but he left Warner’s for a spell ok his many contract disputes. I’m a huge Cagney fan, but This movie would have been a disaster had Cagney stayed.

Korngold painted the musical canvas as any great artist would use his brushes...

A prime example of every element of movie making (for example: cast, the sets and costumes, the cinematography, and - as illustrated here - the score) all coming together in one grand and glorious whole. Looking back, I now squirm when I think of how I once took all this for granted. Thanks again, Fred, for another wonderful posting!

We are so lucky to have this extremely well recorded musical suite , conducted by the great Korngold himself, who, himqelf and his family were all saved, by the hand of God: just as he was in the process of writing this wonderful music, the Anschluss was taking place....and so he was able to go on writing music for many more now classic movies, and more classical music as well. Isn't that an extraordinary destiny? Korngold was already so famous in Europe for his classical music, and was able to safely start a new life just in time for him and his family !!! We must also thank the Warner Brothers who wouldn't take no for an answer when Korgold said that this kind of music writing was not for him...and that he would be going back to Europe !!!

Best Robin Hood movie ever and Awsome score.a True classic .

1938: Warners did a good job recently of restoring the original Technicolor prints in the most recent releases of this, but the question is how much of the original soundtrack remains. The best fidelity then was achieved by recording, in mono, directly to nitrate film stock, and we all know how quickly that deteriorates. Getting the master cleanly to digital the first time is critical. This may be the best we have to deal with. And yeah, I wanted to take Olivia deHavilland home after seeing this.

A truly magnificent score . Second to none. I actually own a piece of wardrobe from the 1938 film. It’s a belt, worn by the musicians ,in the Nottingham castle feast scene. It’s blue and gold. Watch the scene and you’ll see it...

When I was about 8 yrs old, back in 1980, a local TV station played afternoon matinee films from old Hollywood, classics from the 40s, 50s,60s and 70s. I watched 1930s Tarzan, Robin Hood, Jesse James, Soylent Green, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Casablanca, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, I could go on and on. Great film exposure for young me.

Indeed. He composed a ballet score aged 12! His father was a famous music critic.

More dense & versatile than a 3 hours length modern movie score. Moderns are getting lazy

I bought a special edition DVD of this absolute classic and full credit to those responsible as it was packed with lengthy special features. Olivia De Havilland was quoted as saying that she took her then 10 year old son to see it in Paris and she hadn’t realised how wonderful the movie actually was. She said that she was going to write a letter to Errol Flynn because he always thought he was undervalued as an actor, but sadly she regrettably never wrote to him. The film, in my opinion is faultless apart from a scene towards the end when a station wagon passes by in the forest background!

Oh the memories, sitting astride my trusty mount (the arm of the sofa!

It might not seem obvious at first, but Korngold's compositions have influenced my own, such as no other composer. I owe much to him.

I prefer the Wilson Orchestra's recording of this except that that You-Tube post doesn't have enough volume to fully enjoy it. this has the volume but is lacking in other areas. It sounds like an old record - and probably is.

This sounds like the original monaural sound track-via the optical "selenophone" recording system.

Hello Mark, I am sure to give you nothing new but in case you somehow missed it, 20 minutes of the "Falworth" score by Hans J. Salter were released by Intrada Records on a compilation CD called "Creature From The Black Lagoon - A Symphony Of Film Music By Hans J. Salter" in 1994. Martin I heartily agree with you. I am 71 and I remember sitting on my DADs rolled up overcoat so I could see the screen. Even though these classics were 10 years old at the time they were well attended as I remember even though they ran along side more contemporary movies . You may remember great science fiction movies like "The Day the Earth Stood still" or" Forbidden Planet" and of course Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" . With the Harvey Weinstien scandal aided and abetted by the very actresses who accused him Hollywood had long ago lost its luster and become the cesspool it continues to be. Huge helpings of horror and gore and teenage fantasies have turned off the average theatre goer. As an x military member the only movie I've attended in the last 20 years was Saving Private Ryan which I took my WW2 vet father to see. The stars have become jokes that nobody listens to watches or takes advice from. In fact the Oprah show reminds me of the cry from the mob in the Colosseum "Bread and Circuses " is "entertainment" so bad that cash incentives have to be offered for attendance.

@@paulalexander2928 What you see on the screen is not reality. Hollywood has always been a cesspool. The City of Los Angeles created its first vice squad to crack down on the bacchanal that was Hollywood life in the 1920s. The sexual abuse of women and men was rampant. Once driven to a large extent out of the hotels and theatres it simply retreated to the studio lots and the new mansions the success funded. In the wholesome age of Hollywood movies patrolled by the Hayes office there was NOTHING wholesome about Hollywood, and probably worse than it is today.

I'm very late to the party, but would like to know from what/which original source (is it available on cd?) did you mix and edit?? As a OST collector, I have the 2 cd 1996 Rhino collection of small portions of 16 original Korngold scores which unfortnately only has 5 cues from "Robin Hood." I also have a dvd version which has the isolated score track. Of course, there are the Stromberg/Moscow complete re-recording and (in my opinion) the much better re-recording, although not complete, conducted by Varujan Kojian/Utah Symphony produced by George Korngold. Thanks for posting the original score. Definitely one of my favorite scores & films since I was a child in the 1960s.

The source for this video was the Tsunami Records release (TSU 0139). The label published many original recordings CD's during the late 90s / early 2000s. Some contact from America sold them digital copies of original recordings of various composers, so their releases are mostly to be called "bootleg". However, without them we wouldn't have many (Korngold) releases, that would stay unpublished almost 30 years later! Unfortunately they used a tremendous amount of filter, to reduce "Tape hiss" (similar to the DVD's isolated score), so the recordings sound rather "dull". I have listened to unaltered versions of Korngold's tapes - way better! They were considered to be suited together into this channel's 100k subscriber special, but some copyright problems occured - still trying to fix them. Stay tuned and maybe you can witness those splendid recordings, soon...

Thank you Soundtrack Fred for the reply and information. I did see that label reference in the upper left part of your video but wasn't sure if that was indeed the source. I have over thousand OSTs (on vinyl, cassette & Cd combined), and the Tsunami label does sound a little familiar. After reading your reply, I quickly checked my vinyl copy of Max Steiner's Adventures Of Don Juan original score, but was reminded it was a special pressing by the Max Steiner Music Society and not the Tsunami label. I have since come across your videos for The Sea Hawk and ....Don Juan which I also have on CD on the BYU label. I have 2 re-recordings for The Sea Hawk (1produced by George Korngold & the Stromberg/Moscow version) Like for "Robin Hood," I think the George Korngold Sea Hawk is the better re-recording even though it's not complete. Thanks again, and I will definitely stay tuned to your amazing channel.

Hello James, you can find the soundtrack appearing on the internet sometimes. On Amazon or Ebay, for example. There is the original Tsunami TSU 139 issue, but one often finds more often an illegal copy of it by Membran Records (a.k.a. Mousiki Akti Records). Fred

+Michael Schlechtriem I had the chance of listening to copies of "unremastered" Korngold tapes, such a great sound, no much need of remastering at all. I dont know how they ever could think that that we can hear here would be an improvement of the original material at any kind.
