    With the character design, I thought the design of the Addams family were amazing and very devoted to the original designs. BUT the other “normal human designs” were just, ew. They looked weird to me and the limbs of the girls along with anatomy were also weird to me, it looked like they were going to snap at any moment from how tiny they looked. The eyes on some were either Beady or lumped balls.

    That's actually really clever! Like it was something the villain just did without their input and from that point forward they were against the town and it would give more context and reasoning for Morticia to react the way she did to Wednesday... And since they messed with the Addams, the Addams mess with them which would make the mob at the end more believable.

    haven’t even seen this movie, but I can already tell that the main concept would’ve worked if it was actually done in a lighthearted manner. like maybe the adams family is nominated by their community for some home renovation show to fix up their house. this would sell the idea that there is a generally positive, if misunderstood relationship between the adams family and their community. the community might accept their eccentricities on a surface level, and there’s enough good will there for everyone to agree to try and get a renovation team to come work on the house, but they still look at the house and see a dilapidated mess where the adams family simply sees their home, perfect as it is already. enter the renovation team, which could’ve been a few different characters instead of just one woman. like, maybe they’re an interior designer, a construction dude, and a camera guy, and they’re basically just there to poke fun at the culture that dippy HBO home show hosts play into. if these characters weren’t set up to be seen as evil, but were merely expecting something more normal when they took the job, the movie could honestly take its whole run time just sorting out misconceptions. the renovation team could cycle through misplaced pity for the family having lived like this, then a gung-ho drive to fix things which is largely brushed off, confusion when they are stopped at every turn by the family, more confusion over half the shit they find in the house, intrigue when the family gets the chance to explain what they actually enjoy about living like this, and maybe it stops there. the renovators decide that they clearly aren’t needed here, and while they aren’t sure why this is what the family enjoys, they’re basically okay with letting them be. the pink joke could be reduced to a line, like the interior designer coming into a room, sizing it up, and saying “I’m thinking pink for this space” which gets her weird looks from the family. and this could also tie into the “their house is a museum” line, because a crew of normies with cameras are literally coming in and haphazardly learning about the adams family by poking around in their house. and Wednesday’s plot line could’ve been less about her breaking away from her family’s aesthetic expectations, and more about her learning to get along with her peers. like, maybe most girls in Wednesday’s class are judgemental on sight, so Wednesday mostly ignores them, but then she meets a bright happy girl who is actually just nice to her and wants to be her friend. the two hang out, and Wednesday might end up with some brightly colored accessories, which she likes and wears because they were gifts from a genuine friend. she might wear them with a fond chuckle and a head shake, but she doesn’t begrudge the mismatched aesthetic because she has nothing to prove. this could free up the friend to be the one with the parent who is more skeptical when their daughter starts wearing some more gothic accessories gifted to her by Wednesday. but in the interest of keeping it light, this parent might just be legitimately trying to keep up with the perceived, ever shifting definition of what is cool to their teenage daughter... in the lamest way possible. and there’s a lot of flexibility in deciding how far either girl would dip into each other’s aesthetic choices, or who would respond in what ways, but the message would still be that openness and acceptance can look like anyone... but if that’s the common ground that you have with a person, you’ll probably get along just fine, whether you look like a mismatched pair or not. and for Pugsly, I think it would’ve been fine to nix the whole tension between him and Gomez entirely. the whole idea with the adams family is that they understand each other well as unique individuals, function nicely as a family unit because of this, and all the humor comes from setting them up to interact with basic normie culture so as to lampoon the hell out of it. if these two must have a sub plot, make it the two of them trying to collaborate on organizing an adams family reunion in the background of everything. the running gag could be that every time we cut back to them, something appears to be going sideways, but they’re both like “yes, this is perfect” because of that classic adams family “bad is actually good” theme. when it comes to the adams family, truly, they flourish as a sitcom. make situations, have comedy. it can be that simple. and it actually should be... this is a situation where less is more.

    @@5qu1g_ well, or there's also the correlation between people who are part of the homestuck fandom, and people who do a lot of Thinking™ about media. ^^; I think homestuck appeals to a lot of creative types, not just because of the comic's off the wall style of presentation, but also because a lot of the characters in homestuck are parodies of the fans who read the comic (I've gone on ad nauseam about this sort of topic in a few different comments somewhere on youtube) and part of the affection of that parody is the fact that a lot of the characters are very creative people. nearly all of them have some sort of creative hobby, which fits very well with the overall themes of creation that SBURB brings to the table, but also attracts a lot of the people who contribute the most content to fan spaces... and I think because it's so easy to notice that homestuck is doing this with its characters, and because homestuck is a story that is so actively belligerent toward the readers anyway, it's easy for people to start treating it differently? it at least invites a certain amount of analysis, even if that's not what you really set out to do. homestuck is interesting because you can kind of see the bones of it... the fans became a huge part of how it was made, like, in a good way. and I guess once you've had the experience of reading something like homestuck, it makes you more likely to chime in with your feelings on other media. though, to be fair, I particularly never needed much encouragement. :P (also, yeah, I don't think it'd be entirely wize to come out the gate with the all caps, but that really would complete the picture in theory...)

And worse, they released this around Halloween, making it so that the franchise is forever a Halloween-confined thing when the original movies were released a month afterwards. Also, the *sheer irony* of The Addams Family's first animated movie being the most cookie-cutter, bland thing in the world, completely gentrified by 2019's desperate need to have *weight* to every story in an attempt to copy Pixar's waning attempts at emotional connection is hilarious because the Addams Family can clearly do heart and whatnot, they're just *not designed to.* They're immortal gag machines, goth inspirations, and possible parenting tips. Instead this thing goes with that they *"USE DIFFERENT BATHROOMS! Or at least that's the impression I keep getting from the lack of understanding on goth culture. :p Like you said the Addams family's gothic horror hobbies, attire and lifestyle is purely aesthetic. But from where I sit ironically the average person studios were trying to appease would look at the Addams Family and assume that it's a horror series for adults, only be a tad shocked it was aimed at kids. If this is even the case it's no wonder the studios wanted to play it safe. Even the slightest commitment to the Addams Family sense of comedy in this day and age might've risked an outcry... I heard that the original comic and 90's movie Addams were evil but on the more psychopathic side. The 60's, 70's, 1992, and 2019 Addams aren't exactly what you would call evil, just extremely weird but will unintentionally cause harm to another without feeling remorse. I hope this helped explain a few things.

    One complaint i saw people had with morticia freaking out over Wednesday was that she and gomez was often very accepting of their children. There’s a whole episode where Pugsley liked sports and Boy Scout things. They fed into everything he loved and bought everything he could want for it until he got over it (yeah they had a therapist but they never told him he can’t be different). They still loved and accepted him and then here was morticia freaking out over a clip in Wednesday’s hair. It was really interesting to see your take on it though!

    Both plots with the kids could have worked if Gomez & Morticia were ‘concern but supportive’. Like in the 90’s movie scene when she’s reading the book to the baby, she doesn’t agree with it; you can see her concern but she sees how much the baby enjoys it & continues. This was how all renditions of the Adams were, there was even an episode of the ‘newer’ live action show where Pugsly wanted to be a Boy Scout. Gomez was beyond concern but in the end they let the boys have their meeting at their house to try and be supportive. How much funnier would it have been if the parents ‘tried’ to be involved? Morticia showing up to the pta with real finger-sandwiches, someone asking how it always seems to thunder & lightning when she shows up, if pugsly was trying to build something new & Gomez kept messing it up like only a dad can 😆 one of those ‘we love you for trying’ stories. And if you want a feel-good-lesson, than it could have been “the parents that look scary & support their kids aren’t the real monsters, the parents who force their kids to be unhappy & change are”

    The Addams Family's point has never been that they were the newcomers to any sort of community. They're not. They're old blood (ha!) - the closest thing America has to nobles. The newcomer plot was done by their "siblings", the Munsters. (I wish I remember where I first read that analogy about those two series. Once you realize this point, you can never un-realize it.)

  • @raflamar4146
    @raflamar41464 жыл бұрын

    I feel that the movie was trying to take a more serious tone. That this was a world where people like the Addams Family were still hunted down by “the normal people” with torches and pitchforks. Instead of the usual “weird family exists and people just tolerate them” basic concept that we have become accustomed to in the 60s sitcom, the 80s and 90s cartoons and the 90s live action films. The Addams 2019 takes place in a world where people actively seem to hunt down everything they see as flawed in their societies and to exterminate them. This could be representative to the fact that “social media” was used to ruffle the feathers of the people which lead to the “end of movie attack”. This is a world that mirrors our own apart from the fact that “normal” and “weird” are entirely separate and it is clear that neither was perfect without the other. The “normals” hid all their flaws and the “weirdos” hid themselves into the deepest shadow. The film sets the scene that there is a “norm” and “out-of-the-ordinary” side to society. And how everyone is better off if we all worked together. It strongly shows how our society could’ve been like if we were more focused and obsessed on being “ordinary”. Where being a “furry” or “brony” or anything else along those lines meant that you was actively hunted down. Ours is a world where “weird and normal” exist side by side. And how both are better off together rather than apart. As shown by the end of the film. The “best” society is a “united” society of the strange and the ordinary. And this is what I believe that the film tried to represent. This is “The Addams Family” if they were hunted down by the public world if they revealed themselves when all the other versions are when the Addams Family exists side by side along with the normal world.
