The Absurdity of Christianity

Ойын-сауық

Is Christianity just an absurd religion? Why does God need to die to pay for sins? Surely, there could have been a better way.

It is simply a reenactment of the Jewish festival of Passover, which, for Christians commemorates Christ's death. The death of Christ is not human sacrifice, in the ritual sense. It's self-sacrifice. Jesus could have defended himself against his killers but chose not to in order to lay down an example for everyone else to follow in order to end humanity's cycle of violence and oppression.

A friend of mine, as an attack on my belief, said something to the tune of, "God sacrifices himself to himself to save mankind from himself." My reply was, "To paraphrase Jean-Luc Picard, 'What you say with irony, I say with conviction.'" I watched a video a few days ago by David Wood, where he addressed this issue from a different direction. He noted how in ancient days, the pagans believed that the way to curry favor with God was to sacrifice what was most precious to them, culminating with sacrificing their children to Moloch. Then along comes Abraham, and God tells him to sacrifice his only son to Him. Same story, or so it would seem. But at the last minute, God tells him to stop, and says that He Himself will provide a sacrificial Lamb. In other words, God doesn't want us sacrificing our sons to Him; He sacrificed His Son for us instead. He flipped the understanding of the ancient pagans on its head.

@@SoRunThatYeMayObtain - I don’t believe that it is obvious. The 3rd Century theologian Origen developed a way of understanding the Scriptures. He perceived that not all parts of the Bible should be understood the same way; he distinguished between various “senses” of Scripture as literal, moral, anagogical and allegorical. The allegorical sense looks beyond the most obvious reading to illuminate some greater spiritual truth - one story which could fall in that category is the story of Abraham’s sacrifice. While there are some Christians today who take an almost entirely literalist interpretation of the entire Bible, that is a fairly new development and is well outside how scripture was broadly understood for most of church history. As a Christian, in the specific case of the story of Abraham and Isaac - if I’m asked if I believe it literally happened my response would be “I don’t know, and I don’t care”. Someone could provide compelling evidence either way, and it still would not impact or influence an allegorical understanding of the story.

  • @SoRunThatYeMayObtain

@@MrCusefan44 Well, at least for me, Jesus mentioned things that happened in the OT and it seems to me he saw the flood as something that really happened. And with Paul, same goes for Abraham sacrificing Isaac. They saw it something that really happened. But I would be happy to be taught by others. I don't really know a lot.

  • @MrCusefan44

    @MrCusefan44

    10 ай бұрын

@@SoRunThatYeMayObtain - “Seems to me” is the key phrase in your comment. Go back, reread the passages you are referencing, and ask yourself what would eliminate an allegorical interpretation. As a non-Biblical example, I’ve listened to comparisons of Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Endgame to Christ’s sacrifice where - based solely on a written transcript of the commentary - you could not tell if the speaker honestly believed Iron Man existed. But a typical reader is going to bring outside context - it’s a movie, movies aren’t real, etc to conclude the speaker is aware Tony Stark/Iron Man are fictional characters. That’s appropriate in the case of Iron Man - but not appropriate in the context of Biblical exegesis. How are you concluding that Jesus believed Abraham literally believed the story with Issac? It almost certainly runs into the same issue atheists point out about Jesus believing a mustard seed is the smallest seed in the world - and literalists have to create increasingly unlikely interpretations to counter atheist arguments. The better argument is that we were given both scripture and tradition, and tradition never accepted a solely literalist interpretation. But accepting that would start many down the road of becoming Catholic, which is completely unacceptable - much better to hold fast to a newer Biblical view of literal exegesis which means atheist objections are valid. “Seems to me” is irrelevant - how did it seem to the church, and what traditions have been passed down. If “seems to me” contradicts that - you’re wrong, plain and simple.

To all who don't believe: God exists. I used to be agnostic and mentally mock religious people. But when I was going through difficulties (personal insecurities), God spoke into my heart and helped me. And the love I felt in my heart was the greatest feeling in the world. It is stronger than the kindest mother could ever love her children. A love that takes away any sadness. Now I don't just believe, I KNOW He exists. He will help you through anything. Even if you don't believe, still talk to Him, like you would talk to a friend. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. And if you TRULY want it, it will happen. I can't tell you when or how. That's different for everyone. But He will guide you to the truth. And He will ease any pain you may have. He is the only One who can. Wishing you the best.

We could worry ourselves into a early grave in attempts to comprehend God, accept the fact that God loves you exceedingly incomprehensibly. Sometimes he is silent, yet it doesn’t mean he is not there. Sometimes we need trials to correct us through hardships. God loves you my friend never forget that and don’t question it.

A lot of people don’t like the crucifix because it they say that Christ isn’t on the cross anymore (which is true, but it doesn’t mean we can’t have a statue) but mainly because they say it was humiliating for him at the time. But for me and many other Christians, we don’t view it as humiliating, but rather the greatest act of love the world has ever seen. The crucifix is a great reminder of how much He loves us.

You do realize that God would rather us in heaven than in hell, right? And the only things that keep us from entering heaven is our sin. And if we try to earn our way, we will not see the gates of heaven. Rather, if you want salvation, stop working for it. Accept God's gift. God loves us so much, He gave us the option to CHOOSE a free gift. A gift that costs absolutely nothing. That is the only thing you have to do on your end, is to accept His gift, nothing more, nothing less. Also, isn't all love about finding that significant other, anyways? If you love someone, you wish to seek them out. But with God, all the seeking you have to do is accept His gift. He made it simple for a reason.

There is a lot that could be said. But your most obvious issue is that you kept saying everyone else is on the outside when in fact they are on the inside. Supposedly we are all included in the things the god loves. Yet it is only willing to do a single act that some will recognize as love and others won't. And it knows exactly who it'll fail to reach and how to reach them. Yet it doesn't do it.

When I lost everything and felt the most alone , was when I felt Gods presence like a smothering hug all around me and that is what made me keep going . It’s cliche but God truly saved my life through his love as he saves everyone . Hallelujah!

I assure you,as a non-believer,it is not. A KZreadr by the name of Prophet of Zod has responded to this video. He gives reasons why this isn't an appeal to non-believers, but to foment more ire to those who aren't convinced of the existence of the Christian God.

This would only inspire and move someone who is already a Christian. I watched this all the way through, in the high hopes of finding answers, but was met only with mocking contempt for those who find the central Christian message of blood/death atonement difficult and unpalatable (he didn't say anything that would persuade me to not find it unpalatable). He uses the tried and tested missionising tool of psychological blackmail - making someone feel utterly ashamed of not being Christian, which is the same kind of tool that sociopathic manipulators and gaslighters use. I'm sorry, but I couldn't belong to a religion that would resort to such tactics. The entire argument also assumes that no other religion is about love, or can ever have love in it, or is able to make its followers feel loved by God

When IP addressed this issue I thought he would at least try, but at the end his points are: 1. Christianity is popular 2. Salvation isn't "just rational" bc humans aren't just rational, emotions are also involved 3. Only saved people understand the message of the gospel Don't get me wrong, the video has a very good production and several interesting points, I used to be christian and I get the appeal, but maybe unaware of it he is avoiding the elephant in the room: God didn't in any way, shape or form need pain to rescue anyone, if those were conditions to be met it was because God himself implemented the rules and the human flaws.

@MACHO_CHICO Well that's entirely part of the problem too. I've brought up similar issues such as OP, and the response I get from Christians is that I'm "interpreting it wrong." Every Christian I met sees it differently from another, and that lack of consistency is a big problem for me, because if I, a nonbeliever, want to know God then how do I know which interpretation is correct? Christians can't even agree on that.

@@AbOveandBeOnd1 I empathise with that as a non-denominational Christian myself, but you shouldn’t minimise the core tenants that all Nicene Christians (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) hold to. We all agree in no particular order: -God is a Trinity -Jesus died for us -He bodily resurrected -He was born sinless of a virgin -He was God in the flesh -He will physically return -After accepting Him by faith and repentance and being in dwelt by the Holy Spirit, we should be baptised, take communion/Eucharist, and do good works I really believe it’s that simple when all is said and done, though I welcome your disagreement.
