The Absolute State of TF2 in 2021

Ойындар

As far as whatever potential content update I was told about before,
that developer now only tells me they're "not allowed to talk about it" anymore, so I really have no idea if anything's being worked on or not.

The bad thing is that they already did that, with the Invasion Update and... well, we all know what happened and what people did, so I don't think valve would again give the community the chance to update the game, or maybe yes, I mean, the community of TF2 is amazing and really creative with their creations, so there is possibility of valve cooperating again with the community to update de game.

It just always leaves a bad taste in my mouth how the only updates that get real attention nowadays are the only updates that involve the market in some way. That is to say, they're the only aspects where Valve directly profits with this game (which they themselves don't even put in effort to create or even play-test). They've done SOME small bug fixes and whatnot here and there, but considering how a massively popular and profitable game USUALLY gets treated, it's still far below what should be expected from maintenance (aka, oh idk, dealing with bots?). It's a shame, really, the only thing the game truly needs now is just to be consistently playable, which it currently isn't Also I love the idea of Altitude being permanent. I haven't played on it too much, but in my few times playing, it seemed like SUCH a good map. Nice layout and REALLY cool setting. Hope they do that

They'll never truly solve the bot problem only by applying patches to TF2. What really enables these bots is how vulnerable Steam is to account automation. That's what needs patching. If Steam had better systems to flag automated accounts and stop them from getting access to community/multiplayer features (like game servers, the community market, forums...) we wouldn't be having this issue. People get fixated on the TF2 part of the problem, but bots are an issue everywhere on Steam, really.

Issue with that is the harder you make it for legit people to participate, the worse you make the service. So it's a double-edge, yes you make the platform less prone to bot issues but then genuine folks attempting to say...place their genuine opinions on a topic relating to a product they care about suddenly become silenced as the system detects it as 'bots' and people get banned. It's a side effect of the fact steam is the single most successful digital storefront, a victim of its own progress. Really, I can't think of a good answer, and I'm pretty sure greater men than us are likewise uncertain.

TF2 is the most popular game released in the early 2000s (except maybe CSGO), remains extremely high on the popularity list, and is constantly being bombarded by new players. Yet Valve does nothing, just because it's an old game. If they released another big update, I'm positive that they would make more money than signing on with Battlefield 2042. I just want new developers. It's obvious that Valve's work policy is simply incompatible with a game like TF2. The TF team is so small now, that it's been almost half a decade since the last real major update. Valve needs to hire another studio that understands TF2 and gets the playerbase, as well as having the manpower to properly support it outside of workshop items.

Smissmas 2021 completely killed any hopes I had for a major, themed update from Valve. But why only now? Bread Space. The fact that such a map that should have only ever made it into the game through a space update was added alongside a bunch of Christmas/winter maps really shows that Valve has no intention of sticking to any sort of theme. I didn’t think this last year with Pier, though, as Pier is a very standard map - it fits with the rest of the maps already in the main map pool. This isn’t entirely bad, though, as it means we could continue to get more extravagant maps during Smissmas. I hope for a Frontline map next year.

Besides not having a PC or laptop to play games with tf2 ran mostly fine on my shitty laptop a few Years ago and nowadays id even spend Money Its a Shame Really I even dueled some of my classmates 2-3 years ago in tf2 Point is if theyd put more work into the game theyd also get much more Money.

The seasonal updates actually freak me out. Anytime anything new is added to this game, its some halloween or christmas thing. More and more and more each year, while normal content is almost never added. This is slowly changing the ratio and it's looking like a dystopian nightmare to me. Think about it, years from now in the future, when people come back to this game or try it out to see the history, their reaction will be "Oh my god, why is more than half of every map and cosmetic in this game either heavily halloween or chistmas themed?"

I joined a server on casual, was logged out of steam, and couldn't log back in like, 2 weeks. When I finally got it back, i reconfigured 2fa, but all of my items and unusuals that were worth a damn (including one from a friend that had passed away) had been traded away to some, what i assume to be, disposable middle-man account. That was the point I lost my hope. But it's nice to see that people still have it. Keep up the amazing work, Joey. Seriously.

Hey Joey. hoping you read this. I'd say im in a bit of a unique place as far as TF2 players go. I actually joined towards this time last year, and quickly fell in love with the game. It was so unique, and I was so mad I didn't give it a chance years earlier. It quickly rose to the top most played game on my steam list and I was sinking 40+ hours a week into it. I sank money into cosmetics and crates because I enjoyed it so greatly. I missed the golden days but I still had fun having joined it just then. Then the bot crisis got worse. I, like many new people, spent a lot of time on 2fort. Bots targeted there heavily because, well, 2fort is always popular, so I figured at around a few hundred hours in, I'd really start to play other gamemodes and maps. It was okay for a bit, and then the bots got worse again. I figured i'd give community servers a try then too, but that was also no Cigar, and only raised its own issues. Community servers are, in my eyes, a blessing and a curse. They are a safehaven from bots, and you can find anything, but the issue that I ran into, that I fear many other players possibly joining the game right around now, is that community servers are filled with tryhards for lack of a better term. I don't say this in an insulting way to them, but it is the best way I can convey it. By the time I really started getting into community servers, I was at about 700 hours in, and I quickly realized that a LOT of the people in community servers were so much better than me. People with thousands, several thousands of hours were seemingly not even uncommon in some places. Many community servers were so loaded with plugins and addons like RTD or anything else that it was awful, and the few good ones, like Uncletopia, well, I don't have great wifi, so I can't get into Uncletopia 95% of the time, and even there it's a more intense feeling that casual TF2 is. It drove me away from the game. At this point, after it becoming my most played game in under a year, compared to my other games that I owned for several before it, It ended up going from my favorite, to a point of anger for me. It was a vicious cycle. I'd want to play, and spend 10 minutes playing before I became angry. I would server hop but servers were either empty or full and the full ones likely had aforementioned skilled players with several thousand hours. No insult meant to those who have played the game much longer than me, but I stand no chance against people that skilled. I ended up stuck between trying for hours to find one or two good casual matches, or go into community servers knowing I would be outmatched and not enjoy it. In almost exactly a year, it became my most played game, and was promptly uninstalled because I could no longer bare to play it. I'm still hoping something happens with it. Deep down I enjoy the game, I still watch TF2 youtubers, but I can't enjoy it myself. Casual is busted and I can seemingly never find a community server where I won't get stomped by OG players also avoiding the busted casual. I hope for the sake of other new players that I have only had a bad experience, but I can't imagine it's the case. If valve truly fixed it, I would come back in a heartbeat. I love this game, and I hate this game. I want nothing more than to play it but I don't even want to boot it up as it is. One of the best games of all time has been relegated to the back burner despite a rekindled popularity. I just wish that valve could fix it, I feel that given a single really good update, the game and community would have its renaissance, but nobody knows what valve is doing anymore, and it saddens me.

Now I'm buying cosmetics, taunts, finding extreme places to rancho relaxo, and having a grand time- but the bots are ruining the experience. The other day I had to leave five servers in a row since they were utterly infected by disco-spamming name-stealing vote-kicking aim-hacking bots. The tryhards who crash your conga line are bad enough. What I think should be done is bots are forced to play in segregated lobbies where they can only play against other bots, and they get the worst item drops. All we need is a way to reliably detect bots and get them out.

As what better way to show off its capabilities then to release new games or do updates to your most popular ones. This part is gonna be a stretch but I hope you can see where I am going with this. The SteamDeck is launching in February 2022, in winter. What’s a certain character’s country well known for? That’s right winter. And what about those cryptic map changes? Could they all be leading to something? Again that was a massive stretch but I do think there’s a low chance that something will come alongside the SteamDeck’s launch. Probably a small cosmetic for SteamDeck players but here’s to hoping that it is something larger.

I can only expect Valve to continue piecemealing patches and slowly, so slowly, making the game better. But it's not much. A community update is our best chance; These maps show they're interesting in pulling large content patches from the community again after years of only cosmetics after JI, but it's also not the communities best; I wouldn't be shocked if their QA equates to looking at top rated or asking some janitor to pick out what looks fun without properly testing anything more than the lobby UI, possibly because the person working on the game doesn't have time to do anything else. But either way, TF2 won't die. It's pitiful how much TF2 gets compared to other games with similar or less numbers, but the community has kept it alive this far. I don't see that changing.

Honestly I'm still hopeful for TF2. I haven't played actively since Meet Your Match because they absolutely ruined matchmaking in my opinion (and I will stand by this until they bring it back because there's NO reason disconnect everyone to switch maps every 3-4 rounds) and then the bots happened but I recently got back into it and I'm having a lot of fun again. Honestly I think the community might be a little too pessimistic lately, sure it would be nice to get some big updates but I never felt like that was the be all end all of TF2. It's still a fun game it still has at least 10 years worth of content and it's STILL a timeless masterpiece(tm). I haven't even had too many bot problems but it's only been a few days so my sample size is tiny. The point is TF2 is currently the same fun game it's been for years, the only problems are matchmaking and bots but frankly I think that the community will outlive the bots and I might be the only one this upset about matchmaking so that's whatever but if there's anything the Internet has taught me it's that TF2 will never EVER die.

I played a random pubs match today and halfway through some dude had the idea we all go spy and then the enemy did and by the end of it we had 24 spies all congaring around the cart for 10 minutes. Then with 30 seconds one man went rogue and it was pandemonium. TF2 is still very much alive :)

there's been a "community request" in a patch, so i'm hoping valve is still considering those whenever they update the game or better yet, *putting more work on tf2*

this rounds up the game basically. what my thoughts on this if valve does want to update it fully. i think the Heavy Update would just be the final update maybe, because its been over 4 years we asking something of this. it can be the biggest update with help from big creators (like u if valve is le epic) and maybe 3rd party balance mod team, and can just put the game to rest? cuz in the end if a heavy update does happen, whats next for the game? this mindset has dawned on me for the longest time, and is it considered in most discussions around tf2's worst problems? Its just a thought but willing to see what ppl think

I'm still a firm believer that we need a TF3. Even if it changes nothing about TF2's lore, gameplay, and map choice, but just a fresh start.

I'd rather take TF2 but ported to Source 2 with tons of optimizations and bug fixes rather than a TF3. No graphical updates, just on a less bloated engine with better optimization.

Question one has to ask though, with the player count being higher and also significantly more bots in nearly every lobby, what is the TRUE player count? This is also not accounting for the AFK players who go to orange maps in order to get more drops (though idk how many of those still exist tbh)

How do we know this though? One would assume that as long as a user has steam open and has TF2 launched, its counting them as a player right? Or is there some other way that valve is able to account for them? Unless if ya mean there is only a small amount of bots, in which case...maybe the hyper spinning snipers shooting enemy invisible spies in a majority of my games aren't bots or I only see the same few.

I feel like tf2's update was actually removed at the start of the bot issue, and they're filling in immediate patches to keep players happy, the moment they see all bots can do they should be able to chunk out every tool bots have, regaining the lost grounds, then revert to fast paced patches to stitch closed any remaining vulnerabilities until the recovered boat stops leaking.

I still think that Valve could just make name changes on Steam delayed: that is, you change your name, and it takes fifteen minutes for it to take effect. That would stop bots from changing their names when they join a server.
