Two or three years ago I bought two Orient watches for my sons. I bought a pilot watch for my oldest son who is currently a pilot in the USAF and a black Ray 2 for my youngest son who's a member of the Army National Guard. The Ray 2 has been to several training sessions with him mud, water, etc. Both have been good tough watches. The Army only always black or dark brown watches while on duty or at least he's unit.

Orient watches are part of Seiko Epson. Seiko watches are part of Seiko Holdings Corp. While they are both controlled by the Seiko Group, they are wholly independent companies. Each has complete freedom as far as design and production is concerned. Orient is most certainly not "in essence" a Seiko.

Couldn't agree more -- absolutely love my Mako II...especially since I'll likely never own any watch over $500 during this life span - the $10k Grand Seiko Snowflake is merely a dream. That said, you can really make this Orient diver look fabulous with this bad-ass strap: 22mm Bonetto Cinturini 270 Black Smooth Italian Rubber Dive Watch Band Strap - available for about $30 on ebay.

Arthur, one of the best inexpensive diver that people missed is the Seiko SRP491K1, the Stargate 11, the one with the SS bezel. I have many divers, but this bezel just stands out, apart from the overall case design. The 2 big hands lume light a lantern. The bevel edge indices is unique. The color of the lume is also unique. It's kind of bluish green. I bought it for less than 200usd

I have the Raven as well as the Seiko 5 sport concrete model. The Orient has a superior build quality and feels more expensive than it is. The screw down crown and loomed pip on the bezel definitely make this watch a winner. The bezel also has a firmer grip with zero play, while my Seiko has a cheap feel and bit of wobble.

Thanks for your very informative video on this watch. I live in the UK and Orient watches are not well known over here. I came across the Orient brand by watching videos on KZread mainly from Urban Gentry initially and Long Island watch, both have been very informative on what watches I buy, in fact it was Urban Gentry which gave me an interest in watch collecting so it's the fault of TGV that I have so many now from my initial Casio watch I had. I now own three Orient watches, a three star model and two Orient Solar Neo 70 Panda Chronographs and several Seiko's. As I have only a small wrist watches from 37mm to 40mm suit me the best on my wrist so this watch at 41mm shouldn't be too bad so am certainly interested in buying one eventually. Thanks again from here in the UK.

Thank you for the review! I think it's worth noting that the Orient retail price is $335.00(USD), with that comes the genuine Orient 1-year warranty. That being said, I bought my Ray 2 from Amazon for $172.00 in March of 2017. I've had absolutely no problems with it, so that "gamble" paid off. Also, I find the stock bracelet to be more than adequate and have no justifiable reason to replace it at this time. Time accuracy has been very good, better than some of my Seikos with the 6R15 movement. The lume is equal to Seiko lume, IMO. This is a great watch at Amazon pricing, and I'll venture to say that it's even a good watch at full Orient MSRP.

I think the Ray 2 is the most underrated diver style watch. I bought mine for $130 and I think it offer much more than it's more popular cousin the SKX. Especially if you factor in the price. The Ray 2 offers hacking and winding, applied indeces, signed crown and better quality bracelet, for at least $50 less. The only thing running for the SKX is that it's ISO 6425, making it a true divers watch. The Ray 2, while having a 200m water resistance, it's still not certified as a true diver. But who will take this diving anyway? The elapse time bezel is meant to measure your no-decompression limit (NDL) and not your remaining air supply. The deeper you go, the faster you consume your air supply because there is more pressure at depth and compressing the air to a smaller volume. So you breath in more air for the same lung volume. So the only way you can accurately measure your remaining air supply is with a pressure gauge. That being said, I love the review. I love my my Ray 2 and I mostly agree with your review... Cheers!

Hey Carlo - I couldn't agree more on the under rated aspect of the Ray 2. Especially in comparison to the SKX which everyone seems to love despite it's "flaws". And thanks for setting me straight on the air supply. Obviously I'm not a diver and I didn't know the facts you mentioned. I'm always learning and that's part of the fun of watch collecting. Cheers!

A few negatives I found owning this watch for almost 2 years. -Crown is a bit too small for a diver. -Bezel's grip is not that great compared to say an SKX. -Push pins holding the bracelet are quite thin for a diver. -The font used for "Automatic" and "Water resist" looks tacky and dated (this is subjective tho) Other than that, it's a very good diver for its price. BUT not the best inexpensive diver. At this price point, I'd have to say the best would be from testing in actual dives and daily wear: 1. Seiko Monster (2nd gen) - Hacks and hand winds too, and best lume at this price point (both in longevity and legibility under murky water), the crown action feels perfect, drilled lugs for quick strap change to a Nato for diving and back on a bracelet for day to day use. 2. Seiko SKX007 or SKX009 (it looks, feels and operates more like a diver's tool watch than the Ray II). 3. Orient Ray II (probably the best "DESK" diver watch at this price - not saying you can't take it diving without issues. 4. Orient Mako II (4th behind the Ray II cuz of the lume). PS. I own all these watches except the Mako II, Seiko Black Monster (2nd gen) for about 5 years, Seiko SKX007 for about 4 and half years, Orient Blue Ray II for almost 2 years.

All good points, Lucian. I'm a desk diver, so I have no watch diving experience other than taking the BR II in the oceans and swimming pools. I do/did own other inexpensive divers - SKX007, SKX009, Citizen Pepsi auto (NY2300-09G). For me, the Orient was the best. SKX007 too big, no hack/hw. SKX009 better size, no hack/hw. Citizen - OK. I plan to do a comparison of the Citizen and the Orient sometime. I have not tried the Monster (2nd gen as you suggest). It would be ineresting to see how it is based on my non-diving use. Thx for watching and info. I need to find a way to borrow a Monster to check it out. ps. I just checked Long Island Watch. The Seiko Monster (2nd gen) is almost $100 more than the Orient Blue Ray II. What would you suggest in the $150 range?

I wouldnt exactly say Seiko 5 sucks, that is is a bit extreme. Orient had a limited number of models compared to Seiko, and the 5 series are good solid performers, offering buyers an alternative to pricier Seiko models, which is a very cool idea. Finally remember that Orient is a Seiko in disguise now.

These are not the best cheap diver watches stock. If you install a sapphire crystal and good spring bars, then they are good. As stock watches they are just garbage due to their horrific shit crystals and spring bars. The stock crystal will scratch and even chip without you even knowing how. The stock spring bars will fail on you which could leave you losing your watch, or damaging it making it where you might as well have lost it. To me a damaged watch is just as bad as having it lost, because it is unwearable junk then.

Your calling orient watches junk?. An i bet you think paying 10 grand for a rolex is the correct thing to do right?. Rolex watches should be no more than 3,000 to buy. An thats being generous. The orient star diver is my next watch, the 1964 diver, an that is not junk. Id take that over any rolex.... Only watch ill never need, besides the other two orients i own an one omega watch.

Hello Mohamed, very late response but I was wondering if you could tell me if your dial loosened up over time?

Its better to have a stiff bezel... Than a loose one... Alittle to loose.... It will break in.. Due time..... Be patient. But be gentle....
