It's great that you are no longer a slave to car ownership. Years ago I knew a young family that did not own a car. They used bicycles for everything. The mom and dad had wire paniers on both sides of their bikes which was pleanty big enough for normal grocery shopping. In lieu of making a car and insurance payments, along with maintenance expenses, they simply put $500 a month into a savings account. If they wanted to use a car for several days they would rent one. They explained to me that for the first several years they tried this there was a surplus of money in the account at years end. This was before UBER so if they were travelling by plane family or friends would give them a ride to the airport. They made it work and actually converted their garage to a recreation room equipped with a ping pong table, craft tables, and space for their camping equipment , kyaks, and of course the bicycles. Of course it wouldn't work that well in some areas of the country but in sunny California it was possible. By the way, nobody in the family was overweight and they always seemed to be happy and healthy.

@@NPLVentures What I did was put a geared on front (Bafang) dose great at low speeds, and a direct Jauopay on rear... so when the Bafang is spun out I can let go of the throttle and the rear will continue to add about 10 MPH, when I'm nailing both motors at the same time it has torque/acceleratioin similar to a motorcycle. The only problem is it gobbles up the battery really fast, but I mostly use this one to boogy to the store & back thats 1/2 mile away. I've had best luck with the Carbon Speed Cycle 250/500 geared (I'm pretty sure the only difference is the controler).... got 3 and am fixin to get another (black friday deal still on) They don't weigh much more then a regular wheel and on 36vots have nearly as much torque as the Bafang on 52V... AND the CSC motor is super easy to peddle around with no throttle applied....... I'm working up to dual CSC's with a frame motor too on one bike

I’ve done the same thing. I live in a very co gested area. Easy to get parking tickets, towed, stuck in traffic and not be able to park towards having to taxi for a long time. I realized most of my commute was close & me opting for the bike more often than the car. Chores where quick stop and goes and i’m quickly back home. It felt like having your own person metro rail. I can maneuver it quick up stairs. Park it where anywhere, take it in my home & it on the bus or rail on long trips, just to get to a particular area like a mid town , down town area or district & i’m off. I’m on a goal in trying to make the ebike more efficient as possible. Maintenance, easy build, care, ect.

I actually had an epiphany recently, I realized my work is only 8.5 miles away from where I live. After I payed my first car off, just months later a drunk driver wrecked it in my parking lot and pushed it into my neighbors car! I then had to get another car, and thought that once my car was payed off id be free again 😪 That's when I realized having a car is just a never ending cycle of debt, whether it's payed off or not! The car I have now is roughly $11k a year, once it's payed off it will go down to just over $3K and that doesn't count repairs in the future or accidents, not to mention the cost of gas too. About 10 months ago I had a job that was 35mins away driving and mostly highway, but now that my work is only 15 mins away driving and doesn't require me to take the highway, the switch from car to E-bike was a no brainer. I always wondered where all my money was going and now I know why! Selling my car on Carvana next week and they will pay off the remainder of it for me! 😃This is why by the time I'm 65 I will have well over a million in my retirement fund!

One super important detail I think is worth adding -- in addition to all the items you listed which Grin partners with manufactures to upgrade, they also get temperature sensors in their motors. Such an important factor when you start pushing the power up to monitor and without it, super easy to melt your motor.

i have been car less for 5 years and i live in the N.E. cold winters and snow so i have two bikes, a summer bike and a fat bike [ wired freedom} so be aware that if you inclement weather is tough but it can be done !!!!!!!!! Good Luck !!!! Great Video!!!!!!!

I've had them for 4 years, i would day no, hubs are better for durability. Mid destroys your chain and casette and no regenerative braking no fast acceleration.

Mid drive motors are a very niche use case that will chew through your drivetrain parts quickly.

Have considered the Falco direct drive motors. They also have many innovations that make them unique.

I got rid of my car 5 years ago and replaced it with a bike. I use Lyft and Uber when I need too. I'm done with owning a car forever. As I have mentioned elsewhere in your videos I'll be getting an e-bike eventually. I just went to the link you provided for Grin technologies. Wow! I'm definitely going this route now. Looks like I'll be building my custom e-bike instead of getting a brand name.

You may want to think about it a little more. I built a nice bike with full suspension and the whole 9 yards. It's nice but I have a lot of money and time in it. I am now looking at a $1600 full suspension fat tire bike sold by bee cool ebikes. They come with a 48v 21ah battery, hydraulic brakes, rear geared hub motor and they are easily upgraded. I think it's actually less money and stuff like better cable management to start with. Just my own opinion but something to think about.

After 3 years of a sitting bicycle engine kit, i decided to finally get a bike. Build the kit and i get 120mpg and spend about 5 dollars a month for general everyday use. Im about to sell both of my cars, they both need serious reapiars and i just dont have the money atm. After 6 months of use i love my motorized bike, It gets me everywhere averaging 35mph. Once i sell my cars, will get a phatmoto motorized bike and put a front wheel 1500w hub motor. Im looking to go around 50mph with the engine while having that front hub as a hill assist and backup incase i run out of gas. I soon want to take an 800 mile round trip on my bike alone. Chose a bafang mid drive kit a year ago. Love it. That’s how long my car been parked. Of course, my car’s not legal, and battery is dead, lol, but now, I NEED MORE SPEED. Wondering if I should go hub this time on custom build?

Only drive my Dads car once a year sometimes not even once in the last two years, I might insure it when he feels like not driving anymore, that said I have an 84 year old neighbour who still drives. Been e-biking since 2015 however the UK laws are limiting when it comes to speed but all services I need are local. I would love to try a Grin DD the "all axel" but I would prob prefer the MAC.

i always bought steel forks for 1kw motors, been 3 years never had an issue ,dropout isnt even worn or warped no cracks, never stick it on aluminium forks

i bought a 9 continent direct drive rear hub motor for using as dialy rider as i cant use my monster crystalyte motor on the streets ,its in a 29 inch extra strong rim and heavy guage spokes ,i upgraded all the phase and hall wiresto aircraft grade but just abit thicker would be fine and i added a temperature sensor .its a fast wind 9x7 for memory and i run it with 82 volt lithium battery,the controller i use is sabvoton svmc 72150 unlocked which can do 200amp dc but even a 20 amp controller will make this motor haul ass,but on 100 to 150 amp this thing is a weapon although you will need statorade and hubsinks for cooling the bike gos well over 100km per hour and thats for only 180 dollars australian ,oh i also upgraded the barings to best i could afford .as a beginer to inmtermediate motor you wont be dissapointed

I will probably make a video going over my bike in the next 3 months so keep an eye out :P I'm just trying to find a good position for my throttle as I am using drop bars. Enjoy the day!

@@connicrow9463 On average 10-15% of 20AH is regenerated on most of my trips. Not sure exact distance. Also there is a drag when you enable regen, so it slows you down on most stops, about 90% of the way, saving brake pad wear as well. I personally love it and wouldn't want a bike without it.

Lost my driving license and was giving 26months endorsement. Will be having my licence back by next January & trust me not sure if I’m ready to drive anytime soon. Done over 2100miles on my electric MTB which is only 8months old. Can’t wait to upgrade the bike from 250w rear motor to 500w rear motor.

I did the same thing!!! I was spending 100s every month of maintenance, tires, ect. It was getting too much sucked in of the money pyramid monopoly of owning a car in US which means spending more forever. I use a family car when going out neighborhood. I bought 2 factory mad e bikes 500watt gear motor, . 2 2000watt Gearless conversation kits I used to equipped my 2 factory builds with 2000watt turbo Booster. Very, very practical and not overkill of many others DIY duals.

Watched this video wondering if you were going to introduce me to something better than Grin. Nope! Not disappointed though, and totally agree with your assessment. The only issue with Grin’s stuff is the price, but if you’ve got the money for it it’s the best you can buy and stuff like regen braking can save you a lot of money on brake pads. Their new charger that lets you limit charging your battery to just 80% could lead to it lasting a lot longer and more than pay for the cost of the charger over time if you put a lot of miles on your eBike.

Not sure why you were ghosted. Did you clearly articulate your idea of what cooperation could look like? Am involved in the all axle motor assembly at Grin. I will pass your video on to the management (typically a pretty chill bunch of people).

I prefer all in one setups to minimize wires and bird nests on the bicycle. The golden motor edge hubs with integrated pure sine controllers I find to be quite impressive. Their pedal assists are junk though but they at least come with cruise control

Hi Grin didnt ghost you they are just slow to respond to email inquiries... brutally slow sometimes. To be fair they get a lot of inquiries and are often short staffed in their customer service department. Dont take it personally. They may not want to work with you but they will respond... eventually.😂 I figured you were going to say it was their Grin all axle.😀 I have your 3rd pick the 9C. Ive seen so many broken bike forks as a warranty rep in the bike industry I dont do front wheel motor conversions. Keep up the good work.

Just found you video. Thinking about making my Trek Multitrack WSD into an E bike. Trying to figure out what would work the best on it. Would like to use it for my 15 mile one way commute to work and I do have some hills to climb. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you deep dive around Alibaba there are some suppliers with quality conversion kits. I found Sailimotor have awesome products, but same old torque bars, unfortunately.

For their prices, I'd say you're better off buying a complete e-bike. It was $750 just for the rim and motor on their site. And they expect me to lace my own rim at that price too. Crazy! And they're not getting anymore of their nice controllers mentioned in this video, well, until the end of 2022. Instead, they are offering a different one, which the link to on their site is broken. Hmmm what will you get???? Maybe someday. But, I don't have near that kind of money for a motor, and rim. And, definitely not when I need to lace it myself. Crazy! By the time you get your whole kit put together on their site, you could have bought a complete beast of an e-bike. Like a 3000 watt stealth bomber. Or, something newer and better. My whole e-bike cost me $1050 to put together. It is a 1500 watt 48 volt kit that I threw on a Jeep bike. It might not have all of the bells and whistles, but, it tackled the steepest hill near my place without a problem. And, it is really steep. Also, I've been riding it a lot over the 2 years I've owned it. Off road, and on the street, I have no complaints. It even has a cassette, torque arm, forward, reverse, half power (750 watt) option via unplugging a wire connector, a battery meter on the throttle, and a key to turn it on with. It cam with the pedal assist, but, I didn't install it. I like to just hit the throttle when I want that extra power. It does 45 mph to. If I want it too. But, love the video, and, to each their own. Meh, maybe. The most expensive components of an ebike are the motor and battery. The bike itself is cheap to build, they aren’t exactly using carbon fiber. If you can pick the motor/battery/esc you want, and put it on a relatively cheap bike you already own and don’t use, you might be better off.

The good thing about buying a conversion is that you can upgrade it without selling the bike, and you can also buy another frame and transfer everything. Another thing is that you can customize it better than a factory bike.

What do you think of Juiced bikes retro blade custom Bafang hub? I have a Hyper Scorpion with 6000 miles on it. Goes strong 30-32 MPH and is reliable. Makes a lot of noise for some reason (I think due to being encased in the mag wheel).

best motor isn't the fastest motor.

Need more info. I don't like peddling so I need a throttle and I don't want to be limited on speed, so when I'm on streets I want to be able to adjust down speed to be legal but when I'm off road I want every ounce of power that hub can muster. So I don't mind peddling sometimes but want a throttle.

I do plan to park my internal combustion vehicle for the vast majority of the time as my career shifts to an urban setting. EBike ALL the way except for camping trips in my van. My cat will need to go to the woods and climb some trees now n then.

I am looking for a power upgrade from mxus xf19r geared motor which is giving me 2600W max output and has 5,8/1 gear ratio. Need more climbing power - hub geared motor only.

I don't understand the comment about reputable kits including cheap torque arms. What is the problem with them? What are good torque arms? The only thing described in the video is what happens if you don't have torque arms. Not having torque arms and having cheap torque arms aren't the same thing. That's kind of a big information gap missing from the video.

i got rid of my car and i have a ride1up E -bike. Where I am living right now is a very small town. I live towards the outskirts of town but it only takes me 10 minutes to ride into town. I have the very basic ride1up 500 series bike. I am a 45y/o male. rain is not an issue i live in high desert. We get about 4 1/2 inches of rain a year!. i am not far from death valley. we are probably in the top five most sunny places in america. We get so little rain that I often forget when the last time it rained. I think that was about nine months

Grin makes some great stuff. Love the phaserunner controller, and other stuff from them. But be careful using the term "BEST". As far as I am concerned the QS motors are the Top of the food chain. They hold multiple records for speed and torque. But for me I prefer mid-drive motors. I have an upgraded BBSHD that is 3000W but is stamped on the motor 750w(which is the max wattage allowed on US streets). So it "appears" legal when cops check it, and they do. I also have the benefit of having 8 gears to pair with that 3000w. Making my bike not only fast(50mph on flat terrain) but also has tons of torque for hills. Benefits to both motors but I like mid drives way more than a hub motor. Do research and buy what is best for YOUR use.

I'll say this I've had the GMAC 8T for over 3 years now, and it's a fantastic motor with it's locked clutch, the MAC series motors are fine but you do get into modifications or dealing with clutch replacements if you wear that out. I do agree with Doug about the which one is "best." It really depends on application, also you get into people cross the line into motorcycles without realizing it too, just saw someone get a custom built QS motor with 30kW of capability. That in my opinion should go on a motorcycle frame and not a bicycle anything. I do think the GMAC with it's variations 6T (off-road/fastest speed winding) all the way to the 12T (highest torque, low speed winding) do give you a lot of variability on what exactly you want your build to do. 8T and 10T are pretty much middle of the road options. You can also employ Flux Field Weakening if you want more speed at the cost of your range and potentially the life of the motor over time. To address the legal issue, that is a state-to-state issue. Class 3 bicycles in most states cannot exceed 28mph, although most police in my state ( North Carolina ) wont even look twice if you have pedals on your "mysterious electric thing" so they let Surrons and effectively electric dirt bikes that can hit highway speeds pass. I mean I am pretty sure that's why luna cycle sells a "pedal add-on kit" for the Surron. I definitely wouldn't encourage anyone to break the law, but your mileage may vary as to what they allow and don't allow legally, and in reality. I've seen people using stealth bomber frames, just entirely let go because they have pedals. On the other hand, I've seen EUCs (Electric Unicycles) get chased by law enforcement here in NC because they were definitely going highway speed. There is a level of personal responsibility, when you decide to run those speeds on a bicycle. I honestly view going more than 35 mph on a bicycle frame to be a bit insane. Worth noting if you were considering grin tech, I'd wait until Phaserunners are back in, which will be later this year. I do know they have the Frankenrunner which is a BAC855, and you could honestly just run the BAC855. Although the grin tech kits and their support are fantastic, even from a technical perspective.

Looks like the best company to go to when I replace my rear and front BAFANG hub motors on my E-CELLS 2 motor, 2 battery, dual suspension e-mtb. Upgrading e-bike motors seems well worth the time and money. BTW, I put a GRIN Technologies "axle keeper" arm on my rear axle. My front fork is incomparable with GRIN's front arm so I sent the it back for a refund.

Bionx has had regeneration motors all along. Check it out.

I own a rattan 500 watt e bike i bought pre built online. I was wondeirng if its possibel to add an extra motor to the bike along with keeping the motor the bike came with. Anyone LMK

Thanks for your discussion of the Grin hub motors. Some very good points. Also agree with the poster below, best to not write off low cost Chinese motors but Grin really is an engineering company that sweats the details. For those interested, Grin makes a shark battery mount that really improves how secure you can mount a Shark style battery to a downtube. Its called a Triple Bob and I used them for my builds. I hate a battery that rattles on the bike. All said, I am a mid drive BBSHD kind of guy but I also see the virtue of a hub motor. I prefer to have nothing attached to my wheels...like the wires that protrude from hub drive axle. I also don't like an external controller. Last thing is I don't like all that weight over one wheel. The BBSHD with stock controller will push an ebike 35mph easily. I generally don't have much need for much over 30mph. Further, its dead quiet. I really believe a gas powered Honda Grom is a better alternative to a e-moto on the street. Yes, it needs a license. I have my motorcycle endorsement. You can't ride a Grom on a bike trail, but because it will do 60 mph, has turn signals, better suspension etc, its safer and faster on the street than a 5000w e-bike which is lower power. A Grom is about 7000 watts if converting from horsepower to watts.

NPL is right on the money here ,they are the best engineered motors on the market the gmac is the most powerfull geared motor on the market ,the grin all axle motors are actually a 9continent motor insides withmodified case and torque arm the same with rh212 but they enlarged the diameter aprox 10mmso they could have the speed with the torque increase,im currently designing and building a bike to travel around australia and the grin all axle fast wind is what we are using for front and for rear and they are light enough that we can take a second set as a back upthese motors do cost conciderably more than the standard chinese offering

Interesting point about the torque and the frame. With that in mind, is the frames ability to withstand the torque change when installed on the front forks verses the rear where you would think can withstand more forces due to more ridged frame. For some bikes with rear geared shifting like the "Rohloff" hub, I would think the only option would be to install a front hub motor in lieu of a mid drive motor. I ask because I would think installing a front hub wheel would be much easier then rear wheel conversion. New subscriber, very interesting learning points. Peace, Mo

Me? I went with front hub motor because I KNOW 90% of flats on a bike happen to the rear tire AFTER the front tire popped something sharp on the road. Case in point? Road a trike for 1.5 years and DIDN'T get a SINGLE FLAT TIRE. Would of been longer but some Jag-off stole my trike and I locked it religiously EVERY day cause? Just the trike was almost $500 by itself and add in a E-bike kit, Torque arm and a lithium battery pack? Took almost my net income for an entire month to pay for. Almost swapped for a scooter... then found out those? Aren't street legal by themselves because they 'lack' a CATAGORY... Anyways I left JUST enough extra slack on the powerline to the front hub to be able to remove the wheel enough to change the tire. I don't even WANT to link about changing a rear hub almost 10 times as often for flats!

Front hub is great for pavement. Not great for offroad (but not bad), and not great for transporting in a car.

You can make a torque arm to match those flat axels with minimum tools. Select a heavy gage piece of steel and cut it to match your frame. That motor will not go anywhere no matter who the manufacturer is or what the price is.

@@sammiller6631 Meant rode a trike, minor English hick-up saying road or minor spelling error and spell check picked the wrong correction and I didn't notice. But I was putting roughly 1,000 miles a year on my e-bikes so? I'm used to getting a flat ALMOST every single month. But? When I owned a trike? I didn't have a SINGLE flat on that. I hated riding it though because I never rode a trike before and someone stole it so I'm back to a e-bike and I'm back to changing the rear innertube every other month. DID get a rear trailer to go with it though good for hauling groceries just a little better than 200 pounds. Actually like that set-up better than the trike and now? I use TWO different types of locks to lock up my bike. But as far as e-bikes and flats? In my history of riding them for almost five years? I've ONLY had one front tire flat. So was probably low balling saying 90% of flats are the rear tire. But the roads in Pennsylvania suck enough that I buy innertubes IN BULK. LOL😅😅😅

Can I build an ebike without splicing wires because I’m not doing that

As a car replacement I would stick with a 72V Hub motor and a large 30+ AH battery. I have a Mid drive BBSHD and also QS205 Hub motor so not hate for mid drives here but Hubs are more dependable. You can get a QS205 fitted to Moped/Motorcycle wheesl with 10 guage spokes. You won't get flats with motorcycle wheels/tires as they are rated for much more weight. If you require a very light build or offroading then I would stick to a upgraded 72V BBSHD or CYC mid drive.

We managed to convert a Enduro Frame into a 72V CYC X1 Mid Drive. And its fast.

@@stealthebike761 If I lived outside NYC near woods/trails or didn't mind the mid drive noise I would probably do a CYC with my Enduro frame. Curious how fast does a CYC with Enduro frame go? Truly amazing how compact CYC motors are vs a BBSHD and so much more powerful.

Okay not to be argumentative or anything but the picture you showed up the ineffective torque arm you had a place toward the front, and in that configuration I am absolutely sure it's ineffective but if you place it to where the actual arm that you banned to the fork is located in the back, they're very effective

When you do your build be careful to match the controller settings to your battery. I'm assuming with a 72 volt UPP your battery can put out 40 or 50 amps continuous. You need to limit the amps used to the battery specs. That means if you use the same battery you'll be limited to approximately 3 kw (not that it's really limiting).

My kit has a 80a controller, and a 3000w kit….my battery is gonna be a 72v 20ah and 80amp BMS my worry is will this battery cook itself to death? I know I’m not gonna get a lot of range with it….running 80amp Continuous Current….will be lucky to get over 10miles without peddle assist, and maybe 14miles with pedal assist. I really screwed up on my battery selection…..I payed too much attention to the 72v 80aBMS and ignored the 20AH….I guess I can one day build a second 72v battery, and run 2….for more range. Because I know for sure this battery isn’t gonna have a long range….good news is it takes 1 hour to charge, and I use a hub motor….I will probably build a mid drive MTB with 1000w and 52v with a higher AH

@@ebperformance8436 80 amps? Nice! must be a torque beast. Must have been pricey because that's way above average to the point of niche. I had a hard enough time finding a battery with a 50 amps continuous BMS.

@@michaelsprinzeles4022 Thanks! price was around $800….I could’ve got one from alibaba express with a 100amp BMS for around $700 Unfortunately it was too late to get that battery…..shop around and you will eventually find a battery with a higher BMS if you don’t care about range a 20AH battery 72v 100BMS is very nice. My speed controller is only a 80amp…but some kits come with a 150a Savoton controller.

@@ebperformance8436 Part of my problem finding batteries is my trust in the vendors. I just can't trust Ali with anything that might ignite an inextinguishable fire between my legs. I'm not building anything that powerful yet but if I do I'll probably build the battery myself. 1 of my builds is a BBS02 tuned for less amps (to increase range). At stock settings it'll do wheelies in low gear and maintain 32 mph on flats in high gear. With the lower settings I use a 52 volt 6 AH (30 amp continuous up to 50 amp bursts) battery and get almost the same range as your kit does with a 72 volt 20 AH. My other build needs a 52 volt 50 amp continuous battery and I have a 17.5 AH battery that does that. I have yet to see the pedal assist range limit on that (I don't have the stamina).

@@michaelsprinzeles4022 you make a great point! People have referred me to Ali….however I never did any research in the companies batteries. I definitely wouldn’t Trust having something that runs the Potential of exploding between my legs. I’m kinda glad I got the more expensive battery from Amazon. I’m definitely gonna be building my own batteries in the future. I used to race Rc cars and had to construct my own batteries….I got so much into the hobby I bought a tiny tack welder meant for the tiny cells….my E cigs use some of the same cells. I been looking at vids with ppl building them…just like the RC batteries, you have to be careful with the heat applied to the cells when tack welding Individual cells. Using a BMS seems the safest way. I seen all kinds of cells used….I’m still collecting the equipment needed. I build gas and electric bikes…for a business….I’m transitioning to only E-bikes because they’re A lot more dependable…it’s just the battery that gets me in price….but you gave me a good idea….how to save money.👍 I might have to build a aux battery if I ever wish to go longer distances….but my 350w - 1000watt builds…doing my own battery will net me a good profit…..the customer sold bikes have to be 350watt - 750watts to be road legal….ppl have the choice of running more than 750w but only for off road use….

Looking for a quality 750w mid drive conversion kit with (everything needed) in one package that's not 2k! And i'm kinda worried that the day after i buy one, someone will offer some newer version with More power, better Quality etc.. I'm a road rider with a need for speed ! You sold your car but do you have access to another car for shopping/hauling/big items (costco, building materials, etc)?

I have a cargo bike that is mostly driven around 10 - 25 kph. Can you design a direct drive motor that is most efficient at 15 kph, or do I always get better torque from a geared motor which is spinning faster? I love the quietness of a direct drive motor and would change my Chinese piece of carbage mid motor to one of these any day. One problem with off the shelf hub motor kits is the el cheapo rims which you really don't want on your bike. Especially if it's high speed, or a cargobike.

Just a question mate can you use a hub motor on the rear and put one on the front for more speed

Adding motors on front and rear will not increase speed.

I did the same and there was a 17 year delay before E Bike Technology advanced enough and cost became low enough. Ironic that I'm riding Aostirmotor S17. lol

I am trying to put together a fairly light ebike for my sister. She is small, so weight is an issue. She also is very non mechanical. I had thought mid drive but that is a lot of wear on drivetrain. Your thoughts? I am thinking geared hub.

I know of someone with geared hub without cluthc. so regen works.

When you're riding a bicycle that you've converted to a rear hub eBike, is there an increase in resistance, if you decided that you wanted to just turn off the motor and pedal?

You'll notice the increase in weight on hills, but if it's a geared hub motor, there's no increase in resistance felt. I have every type of ebike and each kind has benefits
