I remember this very clearly. Believe it or not, I had almost secured a big interview for Uhuru with the topmost black media personalities in the US, to be held in Los Angeles. The commitment was already there on the US side, and I was waiting for Uhuru's response. Then I got the message back that he wouldn't be traveling. Sigh, it would have been unique. The first and only time I ever heard of something like this happening

I disagree with the idea of a mechanical fault with the jet. A mechanical fault necessitates an aircraft to divert and land immediately at the nearest airport, in this case it would have been Bole Intl Airport.

It is dependent on the nature of mechanical fault. Not all mechanical fault demand immediate landing. Pan pan pan and mayday mayday mayday are both distress signals to ATC but at different degrees. So yes, it it possible to have a mechanical fault and decide to return to base.

Nice documentary. However, it is important to note that a plane can develop a mechanical problem at any time, though the probability of such an event is very low. I find the assertion that someone should take responsibility for a part or system that fails midflight trivial and not well thought out. Every effort is made to ensure that any aircraft taking off is airworthy. But once in a while, even brand new aircraft can turn back due to a mechanical issue. For your information, there are parts that still fail and are switched off midflight, and you never got to know. But the events are recorded in the aircraft log for follow-up. The question should therefore be, how severe was the failure (or fault)? Not so severe, since the plane was able to fly back. If it was severe, then they would have sought permission to land at the nearest airport, depending on protocol. The plane cannot fly onwards or land at another airport where it will be grounded, if it is capable of flying back to its base. So if it was a mechanical failure, then their assessment and decision to turn back was based on the implications of landing and being grounded at a foreign airport. Remember too that this is a military aircraft!

Interesting take, if we assess mechanical issues scenario, the aircraft should have been diverted to the nearest airport with is Bole Airport, and not go all the way back to Nairobi. I concur that there was a Tiff between Kenya and Eritrea. Now investigate the day UK refused to board KAF308 in Kisumu 2018.

If a plane develops mechanical issues they first initiate the pan-pan call to assess the issues. If they cannot troubleshoot it they declare a full emergency mayday call. At this point they should land at the nearest airport so going back to Nairobi the story doesn't add up that would be risky considering the president was onboard the flight.

@KenyanHistorian. This story is very misleading. There was nothing to do with a technical problem. I saw that aicraft take off and return. It was around the same time that a Notice to Airmen was issued for all aircrafts to avoid flying over Yemen due to the Saudi arabia air bombardment campaign. Kenya Airways flights to the far East ,Dubai and India used the indian ocean route to avoid Yemen. Perhaps the failure of the airforce to take this into account during flight planning led to this air turn back. KQ planes are ETOPS certified which simply means they are aloowed to fly over water for extended range even if an engine fails, they can divert to al alternate airport which is at least 60 minutes away. The prseidents Jet is not certified for that. This means the only route they could use only fly near land. The only option they had was though Saudi arabia for which i believe they had no overflight clearance. The best option was to return back to Base and replan the flight. It would have been very embarrassing for a presidential flight to make a sudden diversion in a foreign country yet they had enough fuel to get back home. Offcourse it caught everyone bu surprise including me seeng GSU police lights flashing from the taxi ways into the state pavilion and seeing the presidential aircraft taxing behind in the dead of night yet ih had departed afew hours earlier. Technical issues would mean a diversion to the nearest suitable airport like Addis Ababa. Lastly, the Pilot in Comand or Captain is the person with the final say in the safe operation of the aircraft and not the flight engineer.
